The Palmetto shield. February 7, 1873, Image 1

The Palmetto Shield was a short-lived newspaper founded by Oscar A. Cantrell following the abrupt departure of the Palmetto Gazette’s owner in the summer of 1872. The Shield published every Friday at a subscription cost of two dollars and printed legal advertisements for the county during its brief run. Cantrell was assisted in the editorial department by W. A. Havis. In May 1873, citing ill health, Cantrell put the Shield up for sale, but he was unsuccessful in finding a buyer. The paper ceased publication later that same year.
