iß®“ Cotton selling- to-day at I6|.
B@“ Mr. W. R. Elder, of Fairburn,
has a field of wheat in full bloom.
Messrs. Miller & YcKowns, of
Fairburn, have a splendid steam grist
mill in full operation
C®*lf you ttiink w: don’t understand
puffing try us on a few good cigars, and
we will soon convince you to the con
trary.
After this issue we will devote
a part of our paper each week to ag
riculture and the various interests of
our far.t er ft tends.
figg- We learn from our farmer
friends that the recent cold weather
has done considerable damage to the
cotton crop in this section.
B®. Elder & Bio, Fairburn, Ca.,
have in store a large stock of general
merchandise which they will sell at
prices defying competition. Give
them a trial.
Judge Short sajs tie joing
cutton has a envious appearance, and
it is his candid opinion that the lea
planted in China is coming up her ,
and our cotton coming up on the other
6ide.
If anybody thinks Clark Smith
is not an editor and a printer, let him
at once abandon the idea. Here is a
specimen of how he sets type :
Take the Palmetto Shield, and get
the worth of your money.
While Mr, I). Martin was <*n
gaged at work on Mr. C. A. Harvey’s
house at Fuirburn, on last Saturday, a
piece of timber fell from the scaffold
and struck ' non the head, iuflicting
an ugly wound.
B®, Fuirburn has a Base Ball Club
Can’t we have one in Palmetto ? This
national game is becoming more pop
ular in the Southern States every year,
aud, besides being a health-promoting
exercise, is a most ; feasant past time.
Let us have a Base Ball Club by all
means.
Be Happy. —The ladies will remem
ber that Mr*. S. L. Johnson, of Fair,
burn, keeps on hand a beautiful line of
millinery goods, that she is selling
daily at very low figures. If you want
to be happy, call and let her and Miss
' Callie King fit you up with a love of a
v,at or bonnet.
Attention is directed to the
card of Dr. S. VV. Palmer, late of At/
lanta, win) has located in Palmetto,
and offers his sei vices in the practice
of his profession. Those in need of a
skillful and reliable physician will do
well to call on him. Office in Garrett
& Walthall’s building, fronting the
railroad.
We learn from those who at
tended that the pic tffc and fishing
party, at Cochran’s mill on lost Saturn
day was a success. They ‘tripped the
light fantastic’ upstairs in the mill
house, and all enjoyed themselves
muchly— except the young man who
fell iut of his buggy and buried his
head in the sand. He says the fall
didn’t hurt him, but made a considera
ble hole in the ground.
BfES. We accompanied our enterpris~
ing friend, Maj. E. R. Thornton to his
residence to-day, and after giving his
grounds a thorough inspection, we
think it one of the prettiest places in
this section of country', lie has two
nice fish yionds in his yard, clover, blue
and orchard grass growing profusely
mi his terraces, and when I e completes
his design, there will be few places in
Georgia that will surpass his for beau
ty an? elegance.
Printing Office Bores —lf Job had
been a printer in a country printing
office, we doubt if he would have re
tained his reputation. If lie cou and
have answered hs numerousquestii n-i
asked us by the many bores who daily
throng our office, and not lose his pa
tience, then indeed lie deserves the
the reputation he has achieved.
We like visitors (especially ladies),
lut when a person comes in, stalks
around the office, knocks down more
type than we can set tip in a half day,
goes up to ihe cony hook and com
mences reading the copy, sits down in
our chair, thtows ids feet up on our
desk and looks over all our exchanges
before we see them ourself, we lose our
patierce, and are almost tempted to
dust the seat of his pantaloons with
our boot toe.
Here are a few specimens of the
thousands cf questions we are asked
daily : Mister, du’nt you never make
no mistakes ? flow can you tell wliar
to put them fixins ? What’s this ?
What is it lot ? How long does it
take t i make a paper ? Do yon tnakv
both sides at once ? How much will
you charge to print me a spellin’ book ?
After answering this routine of ques
tions as best vve can, we have the sat
faction of seeing onr visitor depart
with a promise to call next week and
bring the children. Then another fel
low walks in, and with one of our ex
changes, top side down, examines it
critically and observes : ‘Better paper
ian yon been making here ’ \Y e tel|
him yes, an ! ask him if wishes to sub
scribe for the paper. He says ; ‘Wa-al,
no; I dot/’t have much lime to read,
hut when I want to read, I borrow a
paper from neighbor Jones.’
IVe insist on his taking the paper,
but he says be is not able to take a pa
per, goes out and spends more than the
cost of the paper for whiskey and
leaves town, staggering under a load
of corn.

years, with a con
utation, based on its
intrinsic virtues, anil sustained by its re
markable 1:111X18. So mild as to lie safe anil
beneficial to children, anil yet so searching
as to effectually purge out the great cor
ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous
aud syphilitic contamination. Impurities,
or diseases that have linked in the system
for years, soon yield to this powerful anti
dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful
cures, many of which are publicly known,
of Scrofula, an/1 all scrofulous diseases,
Ulcers, Eruptions, and erttplive dis
orders of the skin. Tinuors, Blotches,
Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sores. St.
Anthony’s Fire, Hose or Erysipe
las, Tetter, Salt lHienui, Seahl
Head, King-worm, and internal Ul
cer;'t ions of tlie Uterns. Stomach,
anti Lever. It also cures oilier com
plaints, to which it would not seem especi
ally adapted, such as Dropsy, Dyspep
sia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease,
Female Weakness, Debility, and
Leucorrlinea, when they are manifesta
tions of the scrofulous poisons.
It is an excellent restorer of health and
strength in the Spring. By renewing tlio
appetite and vigor of the digestive organs,
it dissipates the depression and iistkss lan
guor of the season. Even where no disorder
appears, people feel better, and live longer,
for cleansing the blond. The system move?
on with renewed vigor and anew lease of
liie.
