PALMETTO, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 1873.
A LEAF FROM THE PAST.
Mrs., Hubert L, Lee When Young—-The
(hanges Blade by Age and Trouble.
Ex-?eriator Foote is cotrtnbuting to
the Washington Chronicle s<me very
seadahle reminiecences of his senato
rial days. From one of his recent ar
tides we extract (lie following in ref
erence to one oi Virginia’s greatest nTftP
most beloved matron^—Mrs. Robert E.
Lee. After flpetfking of Senator Ber
l ie’s first speech, alludir g to the occu
pants of the galleries, lie says :
“Seated near these hidies vitas one
w hom I am templed more particularly
todesciibe. I allude to the only daugh
ter of Mrs. Cnetis, the pic.,. ..! Mis.
Lee, She was then about sixteen years
of age, and was indeed the observed of
al observers. Her personal charms
were such as must inevitably have
commanded admiration and sympathy,
independent of the adventitious advan
tages which so richly clustered about
her. No one, I urn confident, lias ever
beheld a more placid and winning face
than that which was new presented by
her gaze She .vas t'clily and plainly
attired, as vas lor mother, and th we
was a modest and reserved dignity
about belli Of them that significantly
bespoke their rank and bringing up.
Miss Custis was described to me by
those who knew her best as a young
lady of sound and vigorous intellect,
w'hich judgment and discrimination de
cidedly predominated. 11vi- education
had been ir al! respects sncii as was
best calculated to make her happy her
self. and the source of abundant utility
and happiness to others. Those who
have beheld tier venerated ancestress,
the wife of Washington, often pointed
out tLe striking resemblance which
they supposed themselves to have dis
cerned between the noblest of Ameri
can women and tlie youthful leprescn
tutive of her virtues and her blood.
Miss Custis was the heiress expectant
nf two of tlx- Jarge”*-'v4•*ios.)h-v. Vir
ginia could then boast, and it is rather
a curious and interesting fact that her
uncle, W'rn.ll Fitzbngli, already spi ken
of, was one if the first large owners of
slaves in Virginia who provided f.u
their emancipation lg will, and pro
vided for their future education and
support.
1 had the honor of forming Mrs, Le ’s
personal acquaintance in 1825, and the
various accidents of a vi xed and tu
multuous life withheld me from the en
joyment of a blessing which I should
always have so highly prized until the
lapse of thii ty-seven years had pioved
to botli of us how time steals on us and
steals from us: snatch’ng lire from the
mind, and vigor from tlie limb. When
I met her by accident in Richmond one
morning in tlie year 1862, I found her
pale,* attenuated, and hobbling on
crutches She was then the mother of
a numerous and worthy offspring, and
the dutiful and loving wife of one of
the most renowned military command
ers of the age. Haw my heart sor ■
rowed over the troubles and suffeiings
which I was told she had been com
pelled to endure as the result of a most
calamitous and wasting war, in tlie
bringing on of which, perhaps, no two
persons on this broad continent had
less participancy than her noble hus
band and herself.’’
