A CHOLERA SPUING.
The cholera having at last If ft Nash
villi*, the pt op’eof the :rfS cted city are
riidcavoiing to discujiroi the causes
which brought the scourge among
them. This is a good dc.il like the con
duct of the party who locked the Stable
door after his hoise had been stolen :
l ilt still the investigation may prove
of benefit in he future by preventing
a return of the epidemic. One of the
places which lias been subjected to a
searching scrutiny is a fountain known
as the “Judge’s Sptiig,” from which a
large number of persons procured wa
ter for their ablutions and to mix with
their whisky—the average Nashvillian
never drinks his water neat when such
an unpalatable draught can be avoided
The contents ol the basin, as revealed
by the searching influence ..f a dredge,
were varied and unique, and a reca
pitulation of the aitioles almost enough
to bring back king cholera post-haste.
The catalogue embrac s suporaiinuted
pock' t-books, j ick knives, diiks, bot
tles of hair oil, broken oil lamps, worn
out boots, hair pins, and tluee bottles,
which bore the cheeiful device of a
skull and cross bones and the nxne
cheerful legend “Poison." The discov
eries have caused a good deal of as
te nishment and i quid dismay among
the patrons of this spring, and the
lesson will probably cause the ; copie
to he more careful about their water
;u and less solicitous about their liquor
in the future. It will not be considered
nt all strange that king cholera held
high carnival in the licigiiboilioud ol
the Judge’s Spring.

When you are currying several ar
ticles and one < f them slips, it is best
not to try to recover it. An Essex
street man named Roberts wus helping
his wife prepare the dinner table on
Sunday, as one of the deacons was to
dine with them. Roberts took a plate
of steak in one hand and the c< flee pot
in the other, and had a dish of peas on
the arm with the steak. The wind blew
the dining-roc ni door partly to as he
approached it, and putting out his foot
to push it back, the arm with the peas
moved out of plumb, and the dish com
menced to slide. A cold streak flew up
Robert’s spine, and his hair begun to
laise, and he felt a sudden sickness at
the stomach, but he dodged ahead to
save the peas, partly caught them,
made a wrong move, lost them again,
jibbed at them with the coffee-pot,
upset the steak dish, and in springing
back to avoid the gravy stepped on
the cat that belonged to the family
down s'airs, and cuine to the floor in a
heap, with the steak and peas and a
terrib'y mad cat under him, and an
oveifliwing pot of scalding coffee on
top of him. Then he bounded up, and
stamped on the steak dish, and picked
up the other dish and threw it out of
the window, and finished that perfoiin
ance in time tnhuil the c< flee-pot and
the remaining contents after the cat,
which was making the very best time
do vn the front stairway. The deacon
didn’t stay to dinner. Roberts retired
to the bed -room with a bottle of sweet
oil and a roll of cotton butting, and
Mis. Roberts went over to her motnu’s
