PALMET iO SHIELD. Palmetto, September 5, 107-2. Ooi.. Sol, Johnson is oor ntithm.z (lament. Mr. James Jordan, died lie ir Witker son's mill last S.ittiic )■ night. Cotton picking time is neir at hand, as tlie fields are beginning to don their coat of white. Another new stock of groceries will shortly be opeued out under the YV. Jackson House, by Messrs. Tnoruton & Uolkman. Dentist Wanted.—Palmetto and vi cin’ty is greatly in need of a good den tist. YVe think such a one would find it profitable to locate here. Wood.—One year's subscription to the Shield, and the di fie re nee in in >ney, will be given for a cord of good oak wood. Come right along. Our merchant- are beginning to re ceive their fall stock of goods, and soon we may expect ta such exclama tions as, “0, how beautiful !’’ “What exquisite colors 1” Such is life. Mr. Frank Steed, a short time since, sold two and a hall bushels of wheat of the rapalianoc variety to a gen lo nian in town which wei 'lied 6.5 pounds per hi she!. This wheat was grown on Frank’s farm. There is sorrow and weeping in the household of Mr G 0. Looney for the loss of their iidant baby boy. YVe ■can only ask them-to read, “Suffer lit tle children to come unto me,’' and find comfort therein. Chicken Lifting.— Last Monday night Mrs. Walth ill retired to s’eep antici pating a nice f ried chicken for broik fast. Imagine her anger when she found that the coop had been robbed while honest people wore sleeping Fair Warning —We send this num ber of our paper to subscribers whose time lias expired. They are doing a splendid business and r e learn they expect to buy a mammoth stuck of dry goods and groceries this season. Success to merit. Bv reference to the head of this "column, it will be seen that we have obtained the services of Col. Sol. Johns ■son, the fat man r>f Fail burn, as our general agent. YY’e speak for him a kindly welcome among the good pec j le of this and adjoining e< unties. Also, Mr. J. F. Ellington is author ized agent of the Shield for Palm tto. Tuesday, in company with Mr John Smith, not the Pocahontas John, hut oitr John, who, by the by, is one of liie cleverest and shrewdest merchants of our acquain tance, The cotton crop along the route looks fine and premises an abun dant yield of the 11 n cy staple. In fact, the prospects are good for the farmer jnall kinds of products. There being protests entered against all the Sheriff's sales, of course there was no property offered to the higln st bidder. We found the Ordinary, Sheriff and his deputy as busy as bres in a tar bucket. No one knows the amount of business that goes through their respective offices, until they visit them on public days. The revival was sti 1 in progress at the Baptist Church, under the gnido anco of that good man, lb v. J. M, 1), dd . A religious spirit seems to pre vail among the people and much go si is being accomplished.
