And 'tis «« far beyond our graap

llye por Fattening.— Many persons
consider rye good for nothing except
for making whiskey ; but experiments
with it prove it to be valuable for rap
idly fatteciog stock A gentleman
owning ft young pig tried it for feed
with this result: He took a small cask
with oi o head out and filled about half
full of water and put rye meal enough
in it to make it as thicK as would dip
easy, replenishing it from day to day,
and throwing into it the surplus tnilk
of a single cow after supplying the
wants of tile family. This wag coiitin
ued for several mouths, when tils pig
was fed a little corn meal. At eight
months old it was killed, and then
weighed two hundred and forty-oue
pounds.
Darkness Faw hauls to Fattk.V'
INO —-It is a foot that all animals fat
ten faster in diuily-lighted places than
t! n full light of day. This is well
known in respect to frwis. From «x>.
pcriaienut made with sheep, conclusions
have been reached that in a dark sh:d,
well ventilated and properly warmed,
they will make the most mutton from
a given amount,of food. But dark sta
bles are not good fur horses, or breed
ing stock of any kind ; fat is not with
such the most important object iu view.
Value or Coal Ashes.— Save all
your ooal ashes. They aro great ab
sorbents, and too valuable to be used in
making roads or side walks. If you
have any impure places abc ut. your barn
or out bouses, coal ashes will immedi
ately purify them. A hen house which
is weekly sprinkled with them will be
kept sweet, and the sow Is healthy. If
your garden is of a heavy clay soil,
coal ash s are a gre.t neutralizer. The
lime which they contain as well as the
ashes made from wood used in kinkiing
the fir*, make them a good dressing
about fruit trees.
Draining Garden. —Many and many a
well tilled garden has wet spots in it which
need draining and which if well under
drained—four Let deep—will he the rich
est and warmest spots in the garden. Make
a trial, and you wi l run the drains through
the wholo our word for it. The danger of
tho roots of fruit trees entering deep drains
is next to none.
Beaten* Biscuits.—Work up one quart
of flour—with salt as usual—with thick,
sweet cream, into stiff dough. Beat it un
til entirely smooth and soft enough to roll,
and cut into busouitof half-inch in thick
ness. If you have not cream, uss a table
spoonfnll of butter, and wet with sweet
milk. Theso baked slow and hard, so as
to be done without browning, make the
best home-made crackers we have ever
seen. If rolled out as thin asaknifo blade,
into large cake% pricked thickly and baked
a light brown, they are known as ‘ Qaim
inies”—nice for teas and dyspeptics. If
baked in iron like wofles, but very shallow,
they are wafers. Some of these wafers
buttered, and then having sugar and pow
dered cinnamon sifted over them, with a
browning in a bri.-k ovcd, aro very popular
with lovers of sweet breads.
Soda Buiscuit.—lnto ono quart of
flour rub a teaspoonful of salt, and cue of
best cooking soda. If you have no sour
milk, put with tho soda two teaspoonfulls
of cream of tartar. Work it into a smoothe,
rather soft dough with cream. If you use
skim-milk, or wator, you must allow a
large rpoonlul of shortening.
Poisonous Beverages. —The des
velopmcats by the World of the pois
onous mixtures which arc dispensed st
the fashionablo bars in New York,
have marred the happiness cf hun
dreds and thousands during the recent
holidays. It was shown by analysis
that “fine old bourbon” contained fusil
oil, rancid lamp cil, prussic acid, winter
green and strichnine. The commodi
ty called brandy was compounded of
the same pleasant elements. These
facts coming to the knowledge of old
bibbers, they Were reduced to a great
quandary. Death and the cherished
beverage one side, and health and in
tolerable abstinence on the othor. It
is reported of two venerable suckers
at Delmonico’s, that they could not re
sist habit so far as not to attend at the
accustomed hour; and, what is wonder
ful to relate, instead of the sight of
tho dear creature exciting their 'thirst,
it had the opposite effect, aud each
was perforce content with a lemonade.
We may infer from those two eases
what a shock to old habits, and what
wretchedness havs afflicted all New
Yorkers during the past ten days.
As Delmoaico, tie Filth Avenue
Hotel, Metropolitan and other high
prioed and fashionable establishment*
have the credit of vending the most
richly k «piced liquors, they promised in
the future to have all the liquors they
buy analzyed beforo they are admitted
to their cellars. Os course, they have
no agency in the adulteration. It was
ready done to their bands. —Richmond

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
A compound remedy, designed to be the most
effectual Alterative that can he made. It is
a concentrated extract of Para Sarsaparilla,
so combined with other substances of still
greater alterative power as to afford an effec
tive antidote for the diseases Sarsaparilla is
reputed to cure. It is believed that such a
remedy is wanted by those who suffer f.om
Strumous complaints, and that one which will
accomplish their cure must prove of immense
service to this large class of our afflicted fellow
citizens. How completely this compound will
do it has been proven by experiment on many
of the worst cases to be found of the following
complaints: —•
SCUOFI'L.V AND SCROFULOUS COMPLAINTS,
EnuPTioNs and Eruptive Diseases, Ulceus,
Pimpi.es, Blotches, Tumors, Salt Rheum,
Scald Head, Syphilis and Syphilitic Af
fections, Mercurial Disease, Dropsy, Neu
ralgia oil Tic Douloureux, Dehiuty, Dys
pepsia and Indigestion, Erysipelas, Rose
or St. Anthony’s Fire, and indeed the whole
class of complaints arising from Impurity of
the Blood.
This compound will be found a great pro
moter of health, when taken in the spring, to
expel ’he foul humors which fester in the
blood at that season of the ye ar. By the time
ly expulsion of them many rankling disorders
ure nipped in the bud. Multitudes can, by
the aid of this remedy, spare themselves from
the endurance of foul eruptions and ulcerous
sores, through which the system will strive to
rid it ielf of corruptions, if not assisted to do
this through the natural channels of the body
by an alterative medicine. Cleanse out the
vitiated blood whenever you find its impurities
bursting through the skin in pimples, eruptions,
or sores; clea ise it when you find it is ob
structed and sluggish in tho veins ; cleanse it
whenever it is foul, and your feelings will tell
you when. Even where no particular disorder
is felt, people enjoy better health, and live
longer, for cleansing tho blood. Keep tho
blood healthy, and all is well; hilt with this
pabulum of life disordered, there can be lVr
lasting health, bonier or later somethi/.e
must go wrong, and the great machinery of
life is disordered or overthrown.
Sarsaparilla has, and de-orves mm 1 ), the
reputation of accomplishing those ends. Rut
the world has been egregioti.dy deceit and by
preparations of it, partly because tie drug
alone lias not all the virtue that is eliiimea
for it, but more because iiiaiiy preparations,
pretending lo be concent rated extracts of it,
contain but little of the virtue of Sursnpurilla,
or any thing else.
Dining late years the public have been mis
led by large bottles, pretending to give a quart
of Extract of Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most
of these have been frauds upon the sick, for
they not only contain little, if any, Sarsapa
rilla, but often no curative properties whatev
er. Hence, bittbr and painful disappointment
has followed the use of the various extracts of
Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until the
name itself is justly despised, and has become
synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we call this compound Sarsaparilla, and intend
to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the
name from the lead of obloquy which rests
upon it. And we think vve have ground for
believing it lias virtues which arc irresistible
by the ordinary run of the diseases it is intend
ed to cure. In *der to secure their complete
eradication from the system, tho remedy should
he judiciously taken according to directions on
the bottle.

Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral
has won for itself such a renown for tho cure of
every variety of Throat and X.mig Complaint, that
it ir, entirely unnecessary for us to recount the
evidence of its virtues, wherever it has been em
ployed. As it has long been in constant use
throughout this section, we need not do more than
assure the people its quality is kept up to the best
it ever has been, and that it may be relied on to
do for their relief all it has ever been found to do.
Ayer’s Cathartic Pills,

tive can take them pleasantly, and they are the
best aperient in the world for all the purposes of a
family physic.
Trios 25 cents per Box; Five boxes for SI.OO.
Greatnumbers of Clergymen, Physicians, States
men, and eminent personages, have lent their
names to certify the unparalleled usefulness of these
remedies, but our space here will not permit the
insertion of them. The Agents below rained fur
nish gratis our American Almanac in which they
are given; with also full descriptions of the above
complaints, and the treatment that should be fol
lowed for their cure.
Do not be put off by unprincipled dealers with
other preparations they make more profit on.
Demand Ayer’s, and take no others. The sick
want the best aid there iB for them, aud they should
have it.
