Our rea ders will rejoice, wo are sure, to read a message So high in tone—bo truthful in its positions—and so resolute in. its rec-' ommendations. The Governor of Vir- ;inia recommends that Virginia shall nvite a convention of all the States in the Union to consider the matters of disagreement between them',’nnd if they cannot agree to provide for a peaceful separation;' ana that Commissioners should be appointed to wait on the Leg islatures of the Northern States which have nullified the fugitive slave laws, and “to insist, in tho name of Virginia upon their unccnditional repeal.” We congratulate Virginia and the South up on these recommendations. Every State in the South, we doubt not, is ready to go into a general convention of all the States. If the Northern States assent to the proposition, the South will either have the guarantees necessary to hor pence nnd safety, or tho Confederacy will bo dissolved. But will tho- Nor thern States consent to go into a gene ral convention ? We think not. Then we trust will follow n Southern Conven tion. Stephens to Victor Hugo, who wrote an article a short time since, in vindication of -John Brown’s raid, and condemnatory of the justice meted out to him. “I am of a sex and of a nature to whom these feelings are kindifed. ■ 1 cannot think of old John Brown upon the scaffold without a shudder through all my being. I cannot, think of a man made in the image of his God, Buffering an ignominious death without thrills of pain. It goes back to his victims at Harper’s Ferry—to the women made widows by the outbreak of a single morning—to tho orphans, who had never wronged him, so cruelly bereaved by his crime. I see the two sons who blindly followed his lead fall martyrs to his rebellious spirit. I look beyond all this, far away into the beautiful South, and instead of an old man on the gallows, I see thousands of my own country women, gentle, good and lovely, given up a prey to wild insurrection—1 see those murderous pikes, manufactured with such cruel torethought, piercing their bosoms—I see proua, strongmen struggling against the brute strength of their own house hold servants. This picture strikes my oompassion dumb, and I can only cover my face nnd pray God to have morcy on the old man’s soul.” “Had the insurrection at Harper's Ferry succeeded, the scenes of anarchy which left France lying like nn unnatu ral monster satiated with the blood of her own children, might have been re peated horo.
