Direct Trade with Bremen.
Mr. Editor.notice in other papers
of this city that there is at present a
great movement oti foot, about direct
trade between she Sdutlt arid Bronleri.—
If I do not intrude oil jrotif space arid
time, I should like to draw the attention
of the people of Georgia to a few points
which m my humble opinion stand fore
most to any, as regards direct intercourse
with the continent.
It was hinted at (I believe in the.
Morning Newt) that if sufficisnt freight
should be offered for the bark R. A.
Allen at Bremen, for Savannah, her
owner would by all means prefer to • see
her come back to this’port direct. Now
I doubt very much that such will or can
bo the case—at least not for a cargo of
nqgjchandise. There is hardly ». vessel
Miring Bremen for the great emporium
4^fhe North, full of merchandise, or
enough freight to pay her expenses
er; how much less can you expect
sufficient freight fora port in the South,
Which to continental manufactures is
entirely a stranger? Even if there
should be found enough to fill a vessel
such a cargo would glut the market at
once, and consequently loave the ship
pers a loss instead of the expeoted gain.
It would be tried once only—then would
be an end of it.
• Everybody must acknowledge the no
ble enterprise of our citizens who thus
nre endeavoring to free themselves
from the bonds of northern arrogance
and monopoly, but they must be aided
by someting more material than the
paltry freight on shoes and blankets, jn
order to induce shipowners to send their
vessels direct from port to port.
I said that hardly a vessel is leaving
Bremen forNew York with a complete
cargo of merchandise—as it would be a
matter of total impossibility to fill ail
those vessols that leave there nearly
every day for some parts of the United
States, with goods. But they do not go
empty—but take tho most precious of
all cargoes—cargoes of human beings,
ready to till our soil, ready to adopt this
country os their homo ready to become
good citizens, and thus aid us to occupy
the first rank amongst ail civilized na
tions. I think there is hardly any
foreign nation that the North arid West
owo so much their prosperity to as to
the Germans, and for the very single
reason, because they are such good farm-

No country enn ultimately prosper,
jf she does not take caro to produce
just tho most necessary of all commodi
ties—bread—hersolf. We may call ag
riculture the mother of industry, and
hero we have the great advantage of the
North over tho South.
Is there no means that our State hold
out as inducements for foreigh emi
grants to settle here f Is not the Nor
thern part of our State most admirably
daptea for immigration ? Is not the
soil suitable to produoo all kinds o
grain, wine, &o„ See. 7 Could not—in
short—our Stato givo grants of certain
lands to German agriculturists 7 If this
could be done, no doubt the means of
cheaper transportation by Railroad
could easily be found, and such combin
ed inducelnonts being offered, would
they not enable us to draw part of the
train of emigration to this port direct 7
This latter question settled, then we
may talk of direct trade, and with the
emigrants, import our negro shoes, wines

owner will favor direct trade at the sac

We ought to urge our representatives
to bring this question before the legisla

the people is busy on the subject of
. Direct Trade.
The Yacht Wanderer.
The seizure of the slave yacht Wan-
dercr is likely tofurnish business for tho
courts and officers of the law for some
time to come. District Attorney Wood
bury is still engaged in taking the evi
dence of the crew as to what woe done
on board the vessel after she left Sa
vannah. Evidence will also be taken at
that oiiy to show what was done by the
owners before the vessel was run away
with from that port. It will be many
months before all the evidence in the
cose can be prepared by the govern
ment. The crew of the vessel have li
belled her for wages, and she has also
been libelled by persons who furnished
her with supplies. These actions de
pend upon the result of thedaim of
the government that the vessel was sent
upon a slave voyage. The owner of tlie
vessel, Mr. Lamar, of Savannah, now
lays claim to her, and to strengthen bis
claim presents tho copy of an indict
ment in the United States Circuit for
the district of Georgia against the late
master, for piratically running away
with her. Thursday,' in the United
States District Court, Judge Sprague
appointed B. C. Clark, Osborne Howes
anil Foster Waterman, of this city, ap
praisers of the Wanderer, and if Mr.
Lamar desires he can have the vessel
upon giving bonds to the-government
to pay the_ value at which she may be
appraised, in case the vessel is finally
condemned. If he declines to take the
Wanderer at that appraisal, the vessel
will bo sold by the officers of the gov
ernment, in whose custody she now iir.

Origin of Artists.
It is indeed remarkable that the most
distinguished artists of our own country
have not been bom in an ortistio
sphere, or in • position of life’ iriort
than ordinarily favorable to ; the culture
of ortistio genius. They ■ have ' nerirly
all had to force their way upward In the
face of poverty and manifold obstruc
tions. Thus Gainsborough and Bacon
were the. sons of doth-worken? Barry
was ah Irish sililor-boy, and Moolise a
banker’s apprentice at.Cork j Opie and
Romney, like Inigo Jones; Were.rigtribn-
ters; West was the son of asmallQuaker
farmer in Pennsylvania; Nortboote'was
a watchmaker, Jackson a tailor, and
Ettya printer; Reynolds, Wilson, and
Wilkie were the soils of clergyttibri;
Lawrence was the son b'f tl publican,
and Turner of a barber. Several of our
painters, it is true, originally had soine
connection yith art, though in a very
humble way, such as Flaxman. whose
father sold plaster costs; Bird, who or
namented tea-trays ; Martin, who Was
a coach-painter; lWright arid: Gilpiti;
who were ship^painten.; Chantrey, who ’
was a carver and gilder,.and David
Cox, Stansfield, and Roberts, who were

Fihalr Exercise.—For ladies Uvipg
in the country, here is a timely word,
by Harriet Mastineau:
‘“How can you snore the time 7’—
Well! what la it? People must have
bodily oxeroise, in town br country, or
they cannotlive in health, if they can
live at all. Why (should country fo)k
have nothing better than the constitu
tional walk which is the deity bf towns
folk? Sometimes there is not half an
hour’s occupation in the field or garden
during the day, and theiri is the occa
sion for an extended .ramble aver. the
hills. On other dfiys, two, three, four
hours slip away, and the morning is
gone; and why not? The thinn done
are useful; the exercise is healthful and
exhilarating—in every way at least as
good as a walk for health’s sake ; and
there is the rest of the day fbr hooks,
pen and needle. Thefaet is, the' out
door amusements leave abundance of
time and ever renewed energy for > t$ie
life of the books, the pen, and domes

A European Prince on toe Tueone

publishes a translation of alette^ writ

appears to have beein.employed in Eu
rope for several years post as a secret
agent of the reaotionuy party in Mexi

the establishment of a European prince
upon the throne of Mexico. Senor Es
trada, in this letter, endeavors to sho#
that Mexico cannot exist under the re
publican system; and so soon as sharp-
pudiates that, monarchy must take i its
place; but not, parliamentary monarchy.
The government was to be a despotism,
ruled over by either a Spanish prince

discussed in all its relations, political
and personal. The co-operation of Eu

to the writer, his views appeu> to hkve
been favorably entertained by some of
th leading European governments.—
