Address .of the Bell and Everett Com
mittee
Atlanta, Geo., Oct; 29, 1800.
To the Wunfcf Georgia : ‘
Ip defrcnce to ttaeiwM made by. large
meetings of tho people oTall parties, wo
met here torday, toconfer with the Ex
ecutive Committees of tho other parties
in Georgia,with the design.of arranging
on n literal basis, a common ticket for
tho Union of all our people, and in
struct that electoral ticket, when chosen
to cast the vote Of Georgia in the Elec
toral College, in such manner ns most
effectually to defeat Lincoln and Ham
lin.
It pains us to be compelled to nnounco
that our Breckinridge friends have_ ut
terly declined to join in this patriotic
movement.' Upon them alone roust
rest all the responsibility for continued
strifo and discord among a people whose
interest and destiny must be the same.
The Executive Committee of that par
ty have even declined to meet and con
sult with us on the propriety of union
and harmony.
Opr friends in the North, batting for
our common Constitution, are weakend
and demoralized by our divisions in the
South, and urgently demand that mor-.
al power which our union would give
them. With all our hearts, we are ready
to bury our minor differences, ami hold
up their hands in this fearful struggle.
Our Breckinridge friends have denied us
this privilege.
We believ a erials is at hand, which
will demand all the wisdom, courage
and cool firmness of our united people.
To meet this crisis, we greatly desired
to break down in advance all party di
visions and hush all local animosities.
In this earnest and sincere desire, wc
have met with an unconditional ropulso
from our Breckinridge leaders.
A general union of all parties being
the orriginal purpose and demand, and
being defeated in this, we are left to the
necesity of continuing our orginizution
as heretofore announced.
We have tho pleasure of saying, howev
er, that thejfollowing Resolution was
unanimously adopted by the Bell and
Everett Executive Committee:
llcsolved, That, should the Bell and
Everett candidates be chosen members
of the Electoral College by the votes of
the people, they will carry out the wish
es ol their constituents, in casting the
votes of the State in such manner as
shall effectually defeat Lincoln and
Hamlin
Now, Voters of Georgia, to your mod
eration, wisdom and justice, we submit
the issue.
Will you sustain a parly which has
deliberately preferred strife to harmo
ny, and division to unity f Will you en-
| dorse and -perpetuate the reign of party
| discord f ; — '
Will you select for,, your lenders dis-
I tractors of a common country—distuib-
I ers of the public peace—devotees at the

which, they themselves admit, are as

I Shall politicians still gamble lor spoils
on the sinking body of a bleeding
I Union, whose wounds their own hands
have made, and whioh their own con
tinued tolly would widen and deepen
I unto death ? And shall such men find
I in the people their defenders, and at tho
1 Ballot-box their justification?
I If Mr. Breckinridge alone can defeat
I Mr. Lincoln,’then our tioket is pledged
I to him in the Electoral College. If Mr.
I Breckinridge cannotdefeat Mr. Lincoln,
|sbDul4 the vote of the State be thrown
[away upon him, wheh ( by giving it to
[another, die defeat of our common ene-
[my may be accomplished'?
You must answer the questions at
ballot-box of freemen in Novem-
The times are perilous. Rash men
(should not lead now. “Wisdom, justice
land moderation’,—the noble motto of
|Georgia’«sovercignty—should be written
[in the hearts of Georgia’s sovereigns in
I this crisis of our history; for, by those
I alone shall we be able to avert a danger,
or overcome an enemy.
