introduced in the House, by Hon. Green

O
Vfe are glad to see in our midst again, Mr.
p S. Haynes. Mr. Haynes has been absent
lor some years and now returns to make his
nome in Washington county.
The regular meotings of Haynes’ Chapter
.. 51., have been changed from the first,
„ n j third Tuesdays, to the first and third
Wednesdays in each month.
A. S. Sparks has been chosen princi,

t good selection, and one that will give satis-
faction to all concerned.

As wego to press the preparations are ac
tively going cn for the entertainment at the
Christian Church to-night—Thursday. Those
who stay away will miss a treat.
o
Hon. W. L. Goldsmith, Comptroller Gener.
nl, of Georgia and Hon. J. W. Renfroe, of the
same office, will please accept our thanks for
copies of the Comptroller’s annual report for
1673.
O
Tuesday and Saturday last were two of the
coldest days of the winter thus far. And to-
Jay (Tuesday) we are having real Spring
weather. Some of our old planters predict
an early Spring.
Elder Will C. Moreau has so far regained his
wonted health as to be able to resume his
ministerial labors. He preached a sermon of
meat power and earnestness, in the Ckristain
church of this city, on Sabbath last.
Hev. W. S. Baker was installed as Master of
Irwinton Lodge, F. A. M., on Seturday last
The lamented Hr. T. A. Simmons was Mas
ter of the Lodge continuously from tne time
it v>as instituted np to his death.
That festive thief is still arouud. He (or
she) broke into a dwelling, the other night,
while the family were abcent, and extracted
a quantity of eggs from a closet. Guess the
party wanted to finish up their Christmas
The nearer our Academy building approach
es completion the finer it looks. When fin
ished it will indeed be a monument to the
liberality and enterprise of Washington coun
ty. It will soon he ready to he occupied by
the school.
The Wax to do it.—One of our thrifty young
farmers Alls us that he is making all his ma
nure at home this year, and expects to plant
his best lands in.corn. He is for a small
farm, big cultivation and thorough manur
ing.
S. It. S., Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The copies
of the Prairie Fanner, and The Thunderbolt
have been received and read with much in
terest. I am delighted wfith the Farmer. The
Thunderbolt is a “red hot” document. Ac
cept thanks for the favor.
If reports be true, Sandersville is about to
furnish a lovely bride for a gentleman of a
neighboring city. That’s just the way our
young men do. Delay the important ‘-ques
tion'’ until another comes along and carries
ofi'tiu prize.
o
i.) m’t be angry with us, children, for devo-
gnearly all the space on the first and fourth
pages to the Governor’s Message. Your fath
ers and mothers want to read it, to see what
the condition of our good old State of Geor
gia is. Will give you some good stories next
week.
The pleasant days of this week caused
considerable stir among gardens. Many a
hard looking case of garden has been upturn
ed and made ready for the planting of seed.
Everybody ought to have a good garden, if
they can. A good garden is almost half a
living.
The Sandersville High School opened on
Monday last with exceedingly flattering pros
pects. Sixty pupils were in attendance the
first day, and the number is increasing daily.
The probabilities are that the school will
number one hundred and fifty or two hun
dred pupils when the spring opens .and the
weather becomes permanently pleasant.
O
Resigned.—Air. John H. Martin, has re
signed the position, which he so well filled,
of Deputy Sheriff of this county. All will
regret that Air. Martin could not retain the
position and discharge the duties of the same
without serious injury to his own personal
business. Our good wishes go with him into
retirement.
Col. W. H. Wylie, we are glad to state has
located in our cite - , for the purpose of prac
ticing law. We most heartily welcome him
to a home in our community, and trust his
fondest anticipations will he more than real
ized. The Colonel is a lawyer cf experience
and success, and will he quite an accession to
onr local bar.
O
We were pleased to see in our office on
Monday last, Rev. Air. Domingoes Preacher
in charge of the Washington and Davisboro
Circuit. Owing to the ill health of Rev. Air.
Boring, he was unable to enter upon the
work with Air. Domingoes. The appoint
ments of the latter will he found in another
column.

W’lio may desire work done fn his line. Dr.
Cooley is one of the best Dentists in middle
Georgia, and will be sure to please those who
favor him with a call. He has been in our
community for several years past, and we
take pleasure in "commending him to the
goad people of Laurens counly.

To our County Treasurer, Alark Newman,
I feel very much indebted for the assistance
he has rendered me in the discharge of my
duties, receiving and paying out the school
fund without compensation, for which I
thank him for myself as well as for the Teach

acter as a kind and courteous gentleman, a
thorongh business man and an honest and
faithful officer of whom we may all feel just

Narrow Escape.—A little girl of this city
was attacked by a ferocious dog, on Monday
ast, and came near being seriously, if not
fatally injured. The heroic little creature
fought the dog for some moments with a
stick until terror overcame her, when she
screamed and started to run. Her cries at
tracted the attention of another dog, which
springing "upon the one making the attack
upon the little girl, doubtless, saved her li e.
Fortunately the little girl was not injured at
all.
O
$100 Reward.—Read the notice of Mr. S.
' AV. Hart, offering one hundred dollars reward.
The mule was one of the most valuable in
the county, and is a great loss to the owner.
We trust every friend of honesty will keep a
sharp lookout for the mule and the party who
absconded with it.
