The principal object of trial was six inch quick firing gun of 40 calibers of length on a mounting of new design, specially arranged to bo suitable for either the upper decks or tho between deck bat teries of our new cruisers. Another feature of this trial was tho uso of cord ite, tho new smokeless gunpowder, which has been tlio subjoct of extensive trial during tho last twclvo months and seems likely to make a complete revolu tion in artillery warfare. Tho proof of this gun was carried out by tho Wool wich authorities at Silloth, v.hen the remarkable velocity of 2,609 f. s. was obtained with a charge of cordite pow der. Tho programme began by firing five rounds with a charge of E X 1) powder and service projectile for rapidity. Tho total time of firing these five rounds was sixty-ouo seconds. The same oxjieriinent waa then carried out with a ( barge of cordite, but after three rounds tho firing was stopped for a few minutes to remove a burr in the threads of tho breech ac tion, caused by sand getting into the gun. Tho first three rouuda of this series were fired in twenty-four seconds, and the second two in fifteen seconds. Five rounds were then fired with EXE powder (uon-sniokeloss) and service pro jectile at a target which consisted of two casks lashed together with a llag above them, at 900 yards range. There being no wind the smoke hung a great deal, and tho firing was there fore directed by an observer who stood clear of tho smoke. Tlie five rounds were firod in sixty-ono seconds, the tar get being struck twice, the other three shots just missing.
