Mull Iu Early Calirm-iili, Pays. A Californian tells this story of boom times in San Diego. The general deliv ery window of the postoffice was always crowded. One week tho mails woro de layed for several days, nnd when they were at last distributed tho line of in quirers at tho general delivery window of tho postoffice extended for six blocks. A man who fell in lino in tho early morning got to the window and received his mail about 8 o’clock in tho evening. One old lady, who had plenty of time on her hands, took with her a camp stool and her lunch bosket, and camped right there on the line. She received no let ter, and turned away apparently lmppy, although she waited in line for seven hours. When this mail accumulated the postmaster made no attempt to distribute the newspapers. They were simply piled op in ono corner, and finally a wagon load of newspaper mail was carted away from the postoffleo. To he distributed? Oh, no; to be dumped into San Diego bay.—Exchange. Doubtless if Jocko bail been content with his own back yard and had not giun' abont prowling for new hack yards to conquer, bis name today would not be on the blotter of tho health hoard's big be. if. At the weekly mooting of the board it will be deddod whether he may keep ii]i his nomadic proclivities un molested or whether in the future ho is to he chained to a ring in the area steps. Jocko is the pet monkey of Josef Hoff mann. who does a brisk business in the basement at 37 East Fourth street. A sea captain, who hnd come homo from a voyage to Mouth America for cocoanuts, brought back Jocko with him, and gave the animal to Mr. Hoffmann, if Jocko had stuck his long, Blinrp claws into Mr, I loffman's heart he couldn't have secured a deeper hold on thut portion of the hit ter’s anatomy than he did on tho first day of his installment in the basement in East Fourth street. Every twenty-four hours which have passed since then have only soldered more firmly tlie ties between the monkey and his master. So fond, indeed, lias his owner become of the curious little animal that he has never had tho heart to correct him in any way. The result was the usual one. Jocko was spoiled. JOCKO AND TDK CLOTHR8UNK. So one day, as Jocko was sitting rumi nating in tho hack yard, with a leg swung about the trellis and his tail wound around tho grape vine, he spied Mrs. Kaufman, of the third floor, back, hanging her washing out to dry. Mrs. Kaufman closed the window, leaving her linen, which she had got lip at 0 o'clock to wash, hanging in the snn. Jocko waited a whole minuto after he heard tho sash bung. Then, with a cat like movement, he gained the top of the high bock fence, scampered up tho fire escape of uu adjoining building, mado a well calculated leap of three feet and landed on tho nearest point of vantage of the taut ropes of Mrs. Kaufman's clothesline. Like a tightrope walker, Jocko tripped along the line. Ho put up ono paw to his whisker, just as the real performer does when ho smirks and throws tlie in imitable kiss to the audience. Then Jocko began his aerial feats in earnest. When Mrs. Kaufman went to lianl in her lines that evening she stood as one amazed. Her stockings strewed the ground below like the fallen leaves of Vallambrosa. Her tablecloths and shoots, where they were not torn in places, wero tracked in a pattern in which the chief figure was the imprint of a muddy paw. Some of her linen was actually missing. Mrs. Kuufman had to get up early tlie next morning again, pull out her thread and needle, and, after mending for al most an hour, do her whole wash over. But Jocko nover ran amuck among Mrs. Kaufman’s wash any more. Ho ha<l experienced a now sensation, and having once satisfied himself with that he began to cast about for fresh fields and pastures new. Of course, if he wantod to make uso of Mrs. Kaufman’s or any other person’s convenient linos, ilocku never hesitated to use them as a public thoroughfare. But as a tlivi rsion, clotheslines hail lost thoir seductive charms for the monkey. Tnu HATTER PROTESTS. So while looking about another morn ing for something "new aud strange” lie clambered up on to the roof of tho ex tension built ont from a hat store on tho Bowery. The skylight was open anil Jocko began dropping odd bits which he picked up off the roof down into the room below. His Simian Majesty was scared away.
