Though ho has been dead many years, yet his intelligent face, tall, ereot figure and benevolent spirit are remembored by our older citizens. He was the father of Misses Fannie and Maria Haynes of this city. A beautiful marble shaft erected by the Masonic Paternity, marks his resting place in the city oemetery. I will give you tho cause of hi* lamented death, as Mr. M. O. Wood Jr., an eje witnass, gave it to me. Mr. Wood says, himself, Mr. S. T. Mo Alec,and Mr. Braswell, wero fishing togeth er, with fish baskets in the Ooonoo liver, and had gone early that m-irnio ( to Glen’, land ing for tho purpose of moving their fishing arrangements lurtlier np the river. Mr. Mo- Afee and Mr. Braswell look tlio batteau and crossed over ou the west side of the river and had taken np three baskets into the ba teau, and started buck for the eisl side of the river, and while iu the swift current some twenty or twenty-fiv* feet from the west side ol bank the heat fan on to a snag, some obstruction which caused it to dip wmer and soon'flank, leaving the men to get out as best they could. They started to swim back to we*t side. Still, the knowl edge that ho had acquired at those places did not serve hint well, now that he was engaged as clerk in a grocery storo on Sixth avenue. One day a young lady citmo iu the store and asked tho clerk if they lmd auy horseradish. "Hossradish? I should say wo have,” exclaimed the young man. “Wo prob ably have tho most remarkable hoss- radish in the marljpt,” and lie pulled down a bottle, covered with tho dust of ages, and rolled it along the counter. "Observe its gait,” lio continued with enthusiasm. “There’s a liossradish that I can recommend. There’s an A No. 1 family liossradish. I can warrant it to work anywhere. It will drag a family carriage, on a heavy track, in 2:40.” The young lady looked at tho clerk with somo astonishment. Hho wanted the horseradish, however, and ventured to ask if it was strong. “Strong?” echoed tho clerk; “why, it’s as strong as a steam stump puller. It’s the strongest hossradisli that ever looked through a collar. You can take it right out of your phaeton, after a whirl around Central park, hitch it to a stono boat, and if it doesn’t pull more than a loco motive I’ll knock it in tho head. Fact is, it’s a heavy draught hossradisli, with the swiftness and endurance of Salvutor.” “I meant to nski” said tho young lady, j somewhat confused, “if it is sharp— j does it bite?” “Bite? No; it’s gentle as a sucking i dove; wouldn’t bite the smallest child. ! It seems kind o’ sad like when it has to ! take the bit in its mouth. Oh, no; it ! wouldn’t bite a piece of molasses candy. ; And kick? You couldn’t make that liossradish kick if you tickled it with a 1 straw," and the clerk punched the bottle in the ribs as proof of its excellent di*- position. The young lady did not seem entirely satisfied with tho recommendation, and took the bottle up to examine it ( more closely. “That’s right, said the affable young man; “look it over carefully. Examine it closely for ringbone, spavin, quarter- crack, heaves, thumps, mumps, bumps, dumps, grumps or anything else under tho shining sun. If you find it is not as sound as a dollur, the hossradish is yours without costing you a red cent, and with a nice set of silver mounted harness thrown in. Shall 1 wrap it up?"
