Let us see whether you will not learn from those boys some games to take to your friends out of town. First and foremast comes baseball. If any one doubts tho universal popularity of this game, ono afternoon upon the street will convince him that tho Algeri an boys’ love of baseball lias becomo hereditary. It seems almost as if these boys no sooner left tbe cradle than a base ball found its way into their hands. They commence to play as soon as they can roll a ball across the pavement. From a real game, with nino “men" on a side and three bases, wo Bhall seo everything in ball playing, down to the solitary younster who rolls the ball tip an awn ing and catches it as it returns to him. Aud these boys can play baseball too. I hesitate to admit it, for I was a country hoy; but I'll warrant yon that from the inhabitants of a block I can select niue boys, lions of whom shall be over ten years of age, who can defeat the best nine of thirteen-year-old fellows youi village can produce. They play in the streets: they play on i.'iio sidewalk; and they go at it witli a vim mid earnestness one grows enthusi astic in watching. Hero is a game in active progress; there is intense excitement; shouts of encour agement fill the air. Torn away your head for un instant. Now look again. Where aru our players? Not ono of them to be seen; only a few boys strolling along the sidewalk; not a bat nor ball in sight. What does it all moan? Truly, you have never seen so abrupt an ending to a game of ball. But look; ooming up the street, a block or more away, in all tho stateli ness of blue uniform and brass buttons, idly twirling his club, comes tho awe inspiring “copper.” For you must remember that it is illegal to play baseball in tho streot, and every player is liable to imprisonment. How would you like to have one of yotir games so interrupted? Is tho giune ended? By no means; wait a moment, this, is only “time.” Slowly the retreating blue- coat fades in the distance; then like magic each player resumes his place, and the game is resumed with all its former ardor.—Frank M. They died iu terrible agony. An excellent way to bake pota I toes is to place them on top of the stove, on a wire toaster, then cover with a tin dish; they must be turned often to prevent burning. They will cook much quicker in this way and we like them better than pota I toes baked in the oven. Peach aud plum trees in Hancock are dying from the ravages of a small beetle, termed the scolvtns. Though not more than half as large as an average sized grain of wheat, these beetles are more destructive of fruit trees than any others, and as yet no preventive of their ravages has been discovered. When they attack tree it is doomed, and the only thing to be done is to cut it down aDd burn it. They attack the tree in myraids. A meeting of the tobacco planters of Decatur, Miller and Thomas counties, Georgia, and Leon and Gadsden counties, Florida, is called to convene at Bainbridgo at 11 o’clock a. m. on Saturday, July 3 to consult together upon the subject of handling and selling the crop of 1891 to the best advantage, and the establishment of a proper warehouse at some suitable point, where the crop may be massed and storod and a market orgaznied and established Willie Carroll of Augusta was a page in the House of Represents tives at Washington for four years His salary was $75 a month, Last year he gave it up to learn electrici ty, He went to Augusta and star ted with the electric road their at $30 a month to learn the business It was not six mouths before he was iu charge of the operating department of the road at a good salary. Ho has just given that up to go to chattanooga and take charge of the electric roads there at a hand some salary. Improvements In Ilolled Steel. A protracted series of experiments made at Siemens’ works, in England, with the now process of manufacturing steel tubes, show conclusively, it is claimed, a remarkable adaptation of tho system to tho manufacture of pipes for tho conveyance of water, gas and air at high pressure, tho manufacture of steam boilers, boiler tubes, and especially for iiridgo construction, owing to tiio light ness and strength of tho Hi bus of com paradively thin steel, and which, it is bo- lievod, will enable tho engineer of the future to considerably incrcaso tho span of bridges. The simple as well as remarkable pe culiarity of this process of shaping metals consists in tho fact that, instead of avoiding any twist of tho fibers, it by ono operation gives tho greatest possible) twist to tho liber with a corresponding stretch of material. It moreover may, assisted by a mandrel, increase the outer diameter of a bar, instead of diminishing it, as do all other rolling mills, but the tube produced by this now method is generally greater in diameter than the bar from which it is formed, and thus combining, as it does, all tho various systems of rolling, it is claimed to pos sess the advantage of a construction in which all hitherto known rolliug proc esses represent a part.—New York Sun. Cleve land, O., however, lias, or had not long ago, a deaf and dumb policeman, win has walked a boat lor years and never givon occasion for complaint.
