A cow was driven to Sparta last wock and offerod for sale, at such figures, that suapi oion was aroused about tho ownership. Marshal Bowen was first told that they were from Mr. Wanben's place near Warthen and that their names were Jerry ami Jaok Davis. It was afterwards found out their names wero, Jerry and Jack Ilaniol, and that thoy lived on the plaoe cultivated by Mr, Diok Webster uear Sandejsville- A telegram was sent here and it was found that the cow belonged to Mr. 0. A. Durloo, who was pas turing a cow on Mr. Webster's place. The negroes wore then arrested and Mr. Dnrloo aud Mr. Webster went to Sparta and bad tbe negroes to drive baok tbe oow, and they wero lodged in tbe oouDty jail. Cattle stealing iB not an unfrequent busi ness, and stern enforcement of tho luw is demanded to stop the thieves. City Hom'd ol liducntlou. In Sandersville tho house of Amanda Jer uigsu col. was struok, sh ingles knocked off and chimney damaged but no ono was in jured, Some trees wore struck in different localities but no other damage done. Near DaviBboro Alfred Boss col., while riding in a wagon was killed by a holt,aud Julian, son of Mr. John Hall was soverely stunned. Wo are glad to add he recovered in a few hours from Its effects. A reliable gentleman tells the Herald, that he spent a night with a farmer in this oonuty recently and found such evidences of thrift and prosperity,that he says it ought to ho told, as an inoentivo to others engaged in this honorable pursuit. The farmer iu question run* but two plows, and the past year, be made 27 bales of cotton, nnd sold it beforo tbe great de cline in price. lie also made 750 bushels of corn, and fattened and killed 3,000 lbs of meat, aud sold 125 bushels of aorn, and bus on band about 125 bushels of old corn. He made and sold 500 gallons of cane syrup, and made enongh syrup from tolls to supply his family, and also made some 300 lbs, of sugar for his family use. This farmer is uot iudiffereut to stook raising, and has a fine young colt. Of oourse this farmer has no mortgage nor orop Hon on his laud nor on his crop. Our reporter Bays be is onergetio, toils oaily and late, and everything has an air of thrift about his home. We should add this farmer cultivates about 50 acres iu corn aud about 50 iu cot ton.
