In the case of pnriqne tobacco the stripping of the midrib from-the leaf causes the leaf to fall into two lateral halves, which lire placed on top of each other in such a manner that the blade of otto half of the leaf alternates with the apex of the other. These are Hton twisted into what nre called "torqnets." These torqnets nre folded upon them selves, side by side, and are plaeei\ in Btrong boxes, which aro about twelve inches square, and subjected to pressure. After twenty-four hours these torqnets are taken out and repacked in the same manner as before every twenty-four hours for a period of a week, tho idea being evffletitly to subject tbe torqnets to a uniform pressure throughout. After this period has elapsed these torqnets aro repacked every three d.-.yr for about two weeks. During all this time the tobacco is subjected to a constant, steady pres sure with n press of tho most primitive kind. I should not forget to state that after the tobacco 1ms been placed in the press one week a black Juice flows out of the box, which has a pleasant odor, not un like freshly cooked prunes. Equate pieces of cottonade, 18 by 18 inches, aro luid out, and on these tho torqnets are opened, or, to use the term of tho Eng lish speaking Arcadians, the torqnets nre unraveled, great care being neces sary to separate each loaf. The largest leaves aro laid upon tho cottonade first, so that when rolled the largest leaves will serve us-a covering of the c-arrotte presently to he described. The smaller leaves are placed longitudi nally upon tho larger oucs until three and one-half to lour pounds aro placed upon the piece of cottonade, tho ends of which aro turned, inwardly. Tlio cot- fcnmde und contents aro now rolled into carrotles, the ends of the cottonade are pulled out and a string tied to each end to prevent the carrotto from ojieniiig, and the whole wrapiied in a clothesline, usually made of cotton. The wrapping is performed in the primitive manner flint characterizes the operation throughout. Use is made of a windlass and a rope; tho end of tlio rope is made fast to tlio c<*rrotte, passed around a post (driven int*- tho ground), a twist is now made around tho carrotto, and with each turn of the carrotto the pressure is increased. This is continued until the whole of tlio carrotto is envel oped; the end is made fast by passing it through several turns of the rope. This finishes the currotte, but, before it is placed upon the market, it is allowed to age, whidi is usually from six months to a year. During thin time the tobacco is allowed to undergo a slow fermenta tion, which gives tho aroma und taste that distinguish this tobucco from all others. Tho amount of perique grown and manufactured 1ms averaged, during tho five years preceding 18110, 10,000 car- rottes of four pounds per annum. Wholesale tobacconists have expressed the doubt that any modern method would produce tobacco witli as fine flavor as that produced by tho old and primitive manner just described.—Phar maceutical Era.
