Wi have before us a very fine specimen
of white wheat atid oat heads which meas<
ure fourteen inches from the farm ot Judge
G. J. Lewis. 1 his specimen clearly indi
cates the enterprise of Judge Lewis as 9
farmer. The Oountry needs men who will
study to raise the greatest yield on the least
soil and continue all the time improving the
ground.

The friends and acquaintances of Mrs.
A. R. Brooks will rejoice to hear of her re
covery from the severe injuries sii n sustain
ed about three months since. We were
pleased to see her in town on Tuesday of
last \Veek, looking quite well and cheerful

Tiie Barnefville Ornette of the 18 h,>
noticing the death of Mr. Gideon Barnes,
of that place, on the 10th »nsb says: “He
was the first man to remove the forsst trees
from our now populous c'ity. In the year
1825 he built the first shanty here in a
dense woodland, surrounded by large cane
breaks and howling wolves. We can say of
Unde G’ddy what can be said of very few
men ; he was never heard to swear an oath
during a pilgrimngt* of 81 years; he Was
never intoxicated, nor known to bet on any
game of chance. Thus lived and uie I a
model honest man, unpretending in his
daily walk, he departed with a con
science clear towa'ds G“d and all mankind ,
hi* lust evidence was peace, love, and a
comfortable assurance of his acceptance
with the Divine Giver of all good. We ex
tend to his be r e tved companion and lan.ily

Mr. A. 11. Brown, one of the oldest end"
highly esteemed citixcns of this c >uuty, died
at bis residence near Double bridges,
on Saturday last, 13th inst. Mr. Brown
was one of the first settlers of Up®on county,
and has filled many public offices of trust
and profit. He was the first Clerk of the
Inferior Court of Upson county, elect-d
in 1825. which office he faithfully tilled
until 1830. He whs elected Sheriff in 1832
in which office he served two years lie also
served as Judge of the Inferior Court f<»r
many years. He served during the war of
IH,>6 as Captain of an I Tan try C‘>mpa> y
from Upson county in the Utir*»d States
Army. He was buried last Sunday »t
Fcllowshipchurch, with M tsonic honors x <y
Gaston L No. 92, of Pleasant Hill,
I albot county, which Lodge he has served
sever and years as Master. Thus has passed
away one more of our be6t and moat useful
citizen®. Peace to his remains.

Me feel that it is unnecessary to urge
zeal and interest on the part of the differ
ent Committees, as they arc doub'less fully
alive to the proper disehalge of their duty
\V e 1 >ok forward to the occasion with a
great deal of anxiety and interest, as we
think every one should who is at all con
cerned about the social and spiritual welfare
of the community. There will doubtlei-ft be
many visitors, delegates, ministers, and
friends present. While the-spiritual man
should first be considered, we would sug
gest that it will not do to neglect the physi
cal. From what little experience we have
had in feeding ministers, we find that they
appreciate a good mofsel ns much as all
other e'asses of humanity. We would there
s- re suggest that he who has a suitable
swine, mutton, &c., will do well to begin
pliysicin£ with corn and other increasing
neutriinents. Be sure you do not let the
chickens ascertain the time of the meeting
lest they should take refuge. Parties who
are willing and are so sttuited that they
can entertain visitors will please notify th*
Committee.
