Gentry was f? tow graph office, for favors during tho past week. May the vessel upon which he em barks on the sea of matrimony, be gently wafted across that ocean of bliss with Helms ever at the Helm. W k understand that a Game Cock dispute came off yesterday evening, not a hundred miles from here, in which two well-known fanciers pitted tbe i r favorites. A verdict of sixty dol lars was rendered on tbe spot by a mixedjury, and one of the parties left the classic grounds minus the above im, and a badly whipped chicken. Moral.—Invest your money in •mething more certain than chicken fights. Painful Accident.—The many friends ol Majoi Ely of Albany, will regret to learn that he was thrown from a buggy a few miles from this place on tho road to Albany on Thurs day afternoon, breaking his left; leg just above the ankle. Tbe bones pro tending through the skin and pene trating the dirt. Tbe fracture being compound one—Drs. Bower and Bruce were dispatched for, and set the injured limb, and we learn that he wiil be able to return to his home to day. We wish the Major safe on his pins again at an early day. His Honor, # Judge A. II. Hansell has been absent this week holdin; Court in Colquitt, accompanied by tho new and popular Solicitor of his cir cuit, Robert G. Mitchell, Esq. Council Proceedings.—The En terprise has the contract foi publish ing tho proceedings of the City Council, but we shall publish them plso, as a matter of information. Wc propose giving our readers all the local as well ns general news. See proc:edings of special and last regular meeting of Council. Spring Goods.—A large number of our enterprising merchants are abseut purchasing their Spcug Stock. The well known taste of raaiy of them is a sufficient guarantee tha tbe ladies will'soon see on the countcn in Thom- asville all tho latest styles of spring stock. Read the Times ant see where to buy tho best and cheapest goods. Do you wish to know wlcre to buy your dry goods, groceries hardware, drugs, saddlery, or anythin; else? look at oui advertising columns. This proposition is in tlic main correct. A house that advertises means business, and they expect to sell then ever a customer comes iu. Tlose houses who do not advertise arc lot up with tho lire business meu of the day—as a rule. R. .Johnston.—Among the many to whom wc arc indebted for courtesies In getting out ttys first nnm- her of tho Times, Mr. Johnston is certainly deserving of oin thanks.— Happening to be in our city just in tho ntek of time, lie has,' to his pro fessional skill, rendered a service that will bo remembered. Mr; Johnston was late editor and proprietor of the “Bainbridge Sun" but hi present is enjoying his freedom. Post Office.—The very haudsomc and conveniently arraigned boxes in the Post Office have, for the past day or two, attracted the attention ot all who was expecting anything through the medium of Uncle Sam's mail hags.— They are the result of the new admin istration in the Post Oflice, and it our young P. They have puichased four of the Babcock Fire Extinguishers from Mr. Baker, the agent, who lately showed our city fathers what he knew about putting out fire. Tho Council also authorized the thorough repair ing of the Vigilaat's Engine, and the purchase of a sufficient amount of Hose to make this stalwart company effective. With the Neps ever ready and will ing, under tho command of their pop ular foicwan, Col. Tiie Extension of Fletcher Street.—We notice among the many other improvements going ou iu our city, that a large force is steadily at work in pushing Ibis important thor oughfare to completion. Under the immediate supci intcndence of Marshal Spair, the work is being pressed rapid ly forward and in a manner highly creditable to that efficient officer. Tbe street from Its intersection with Fletcher is seventy-cigut tect wide, until it touches the right of way be longing to the Atlantic and Gulf Rail Road where its width is reduced to sixty feet, this width being maintained until its junction with Jackson street near the depot The unsightly swamp lying in .rear of Thompson’s Foundry with its malarial appearance, will sosn give way to* a' broad, well beaten, thoroughfare.
