Amid all this—the centre of the scene,

Plied the Hwi.ft wheel,-and with her joyless

Sat like a fate, and watched the flying thread.
She had known sorrow. He had walked with
her,
Oft snpt, and broke with her the astien crust,
And in the dead leaves still she heard the stir
Os his thick mantle trailing in the dust.
AVhiic yet her cheek was bright with summer
bloom.
Her country summoned, and she gave her till,
And twice war bowed to her his sable plume
Re-gave the sword to rust upon the wall.
Re-gave the sword, but not tho hands that
drew
And struck for liberty tho dying blow ;
Nor him who, to his sire and country true,
Fell mid the ranks of the invading foe.
Long, but not loud, the droning wheel went
on,
Like the low murmur of a hive at noon 1
Long, but not loud, the memory of the gone
Breathed through her lips a sad and tremu
lous tone.
At last the thread was snapped \ her head was
bowed
Life dropped the distaff through her hands
serene ;
And loving neighbors smoothed her careful
shroud ;
AVhile death and winter closed tho Autumn
scene.
A New Credit System.
A certain merchant in Austria v.r.s recently
at the door of his store by an honest-look
ing Frenchman, an entire stranger to him. who
asked credit for a barrel of floor. ‘lean pay
half 7.c cash down and 7.e balance next Satur
day, sure.’ The merchant, without hesitation,
turned to one of his clerks, and, with a kindly
smile on the would-be owner of the barrel of
flour, said : ‘This good man wants to get trusted
for a barrel of Spur, he’ll pay half down and
the rest next Saturday. I’ll ri-k him; he’s
good as gold ; open a fresh barrel ; weigh out
half, deliver it in good shape at his house, put
the barrel away safely, and take it down next
Saturday when he pays the rest; never refuse
to trust an honest-looking man for bread.’ It
was done ; the money was paid, and the French
gentleman departed, rejoicing in an abundance
of flour nnd unlimited credit.

Democratic tut. House.—The
correspondent of the Herald writes :
Tn the H tuse the Republicans Benin to bo
Tearfully domora'i ; M at tho sight of so many
Democrats. They have no hope that a Ku-klux
bill can bo passed, and very few of them, except
the bold Ben Butler, have any idea of tnmg
the experiment. The Democrats, tie - allege*
would keep them here nil summer. B n But
ler .says he is willing to try ip and he can stay
ns hmgnsthe Democrats. Butler stated *o day
that he did not intend to go into general legis
lation, but only to pas* n bill for the yuppres*
sion of the Ku-k'ux. One of his co!h agues
said tbe Republicans could not pas:; a bill < f
that kind if they remained here nil the year.
The indications are that the Democrnt’c side
of the House will extreme n wholesome re
straint in the new Congress over tho lb-publi
cans. The latter, at least, s'em to appear to
appreciate fully the P*»mo.-retie strength.
Dr. Hull tehites ihe -of a man who was
cured of biliousness bv g* jog with' ut his sup
per and drinking freely of I-m .ale. Every
morning, says the Doctor, thi. patient rose
w ith a w-nd' i fill sen-e of re- t, r* fre-hmont',
and a feeling as though the !»’ *d had been lir
erally washed, cleansed, and <. o: i by the
lemonade and the fast. Ills theory is thr.l fm and
wiil lie used as a remedy for many diseases
successfully. For example, he instances cures
of-pitting blood by the use of salt, epilepsy
and yellow fever, watermelons/, kidney affec
tions, celery poison, olive or sweet oil; ery
sipelas, pounded cranberries applied to the
parts affected ; hydrophobia, onions, etc. So the
thing to do in order to keep in good health, is
really to know what to eat, and not what med
icine to take.
Tt is strange how some men carry in their
faces and figures a striking resemblance to cer
tain animals. After a study of Lavatcr, one
can look over this House and he greatly enter
tained with illustration*. Butler, for example,
is a cross between a seal and a cat, and when
fairly aroused he looks like an aged tiger that,
through some strange process, had gone bald.
Farnsworth always put cue in mind of a biPy
g ;;it. Much of this is due to his long, straight
beard, and much to the manner in which ho
stands up and wags his head, as if he was going

A SMALL'Pox Ef.medv. —We clip the follow
ing paragraph from an exchange, giving it for
whatever the prescription mriv he worth aa »
sinall-pox remedy: ... i ;
A correspondent of' the Stodkton (Cal.)
Herald writes as follows: “f herewith np
pend a receipt which has been used to ,my
knowledge in hundreds of eases, it will pro-,
vent or cure he -mail pox, though the
are trifling. When Jennor discovered cnvtk
pox in England, tiic world of science hurled
an avalanche upon his head, but when the
most scientific school of medicine in the world
tha* f Fails—published this receipt as a
panacea fw small pox, it passed unheeded.—
It is unfailing as fate, and conquers in every
instance. Pis harmless when taken by a well,
p. - on, ft will also cure scarlet fever. Here
is the recipe as T have used it, and cured my
children of scarlet fever;' here it is ns f
used it to cure small pox ; when learned pliy
si,dans said the patient must die, it cured :
Sulphate of zinc, rue grain ; fox glove (digi
talis.) one grain ; half a teaspoonful of sugar ;
no: who two teaspoonfuls of water. When
tV r lighiv mixed, add four ounces of water.
Cuk i00v.r.,1 every iiour. F.ither disenso
will disappear in twelve hours. For a child,
smaller doses, according to age. If countries
would compel their physicians to use this,
there would be no need of pest houses. If
you value advice and experience, use this
for that terrible disease.’’
Pooit Old Hamburg ! —At an election held
in Hamburg on the 2d inst., for Municipal odi
cer.; of that ancient burg, Prince Rivers (negro)
was elected Intendant; and Louis Sch. Her, A,
T. Attaway, A. Nurnberger and Joe Tnomas,
Wardens.
Poor old God-forsaken Hamburg—once the
ftou'ishing cotton mart of Western Carolina,
now toe abode of a greater number of the most
c msumniato Radical thieves, plunderers, and
‘ears of low degree,’ in proportion to popular
tion. than ever cursed any other spot on the
broad face of this green earth of ours. The
f w decant people yet residents of that luck
i; s to rn (and there are a few) have our
warmest commiseration ; and we would urge
them to gather up their households and hie
away to the neighboring hills, and there prny
fervently for a spring freshet. A freshet forty
foot high is now- the only hope for the redemp
tion of Hamburg. Brethren let .us pray.—

The Sax Domingo Breaker.—The Herald,
commenting on the attitude of Mr. Sumner,
s«ys :
There is a possibility, if Mr. Sumner sticks'
to his opposition, that this St. Doming® bujsi-
Boss, insignificant and outlandish as it.is, may
break up the Republican aorty, Squatter

often the causo of great effects; and it would
be too had, indeed, if so meagre a matter as
the, appointment of the St. Domingo Commiss
sinners should end in a total disruption of the
great Republican party.

V One Should not Swear. —An article
in: Pittsburg Preacher, give* six good rea
son -.vhy a man should not swear :
1. It is mean. A man of high standing
won! 1 almost as m steal sheep as swear.
2. It is vulgar—altogether too low for a
decoat man.
3. It is cowardly—implying a fear either of
re : 'wing believed or obeyed.
4. It is nngontlemnnly. A gentleman, nc»
curßng to Webster, is a genteel man—well
b e l , refi.ied. Such an one will no more
sv. ,ir than go into the street to throw mud
tviih a loafer.
3. It is indecent—offensive to delicacy and
extr mely unfit for human ears.
C. T is foolish. ‘Want of decency is want
of sense.’

\r iRO Kc-Ki.i x.— The negro is an imitative
animal. Tie follows very closely the examples
of his white brother. We hear of a real, live,
veritable negro Ku'Kluxing affair, which oc
curred at Samlersville, last week. A band of
five negroes made a descent on the premises of
Mr. Wm. T. Riddle, who had in his employ a
i.egro who was, it appears, adjudged guilty of
the crime of bigamy by his sable brethren, and
f,,r this thev sought to Ku Klux him. This
they did very summarily and very severely by
lashing him e.lmost unto death. The negro
Ku-Kiuxes were pursued by some of the white
citizens, arrested and jailed. ‘And the colored
troops fought nobly.’— Augusta Constitution
alist.
Fast Enough.—A man in Cairo; fll„ after
wiinossir.g the performance of a tightrope
artist, said it was easy enough to walk a rope
if a man had the nerve. lie said he had the
nerve, so he fastened a clothesline from the top
of the barn to the chimr.ey of the house, took
a hoe handle to balance himself, and started.
It wasn’t forty-eight hours after that before
the family were outriding in carriages, dressed
in mourning. Being interviewed, his ’art
words were : ‘I cculd have done it if I had only
had a"mething to rest the hoe handle on,’
Profits of Manufacturing. —England, lost
year, paid tho United States $184,600,000 for
raw cotton, and by making this cotton into
fabrics she cleared $188,000,000 —in other
words, England made clear $4,000,000 more
than America received for her Grop. This is
encouraging to Southern manufacturers, who,
except in the cheapness of money and abun
dance of labor, have every advantage over
England.
