On Strawberrte*.
The etrawberry is one or nature’s
aweet pets. She makes them woith
fifty cents, the furst she makes, and
never allow them tew be sold at a
mean price.
The culler uv the strawberry iz like
the aittiog sun under a thin cloud,
with a delicate dash up the rainbo in
it; its fragrance iz like the breath uv a
baby when it furst begins to eat winter
green lozzingers ; its flavor is like the
negtar which an old-fashioned goddess
used to have in the bottom uv the
tumbler when Jupiter stood treat on
Mount Ida.
There iz many breeds of this de
liteful vegetable, but not a mean one
in the hull lot.
I think 1 heve stole them, lying
around loos, without any pedigree, in
somebody’s tall grass when I wuz a
lazy schoolboy, that eat dreadful easy,
without any white sugar on them, and
even a bug occasionally mixed with ’em
in the hurry uv the moment. Cherrys
is good, but they are too much like
suckin’ a marble with a handle tew it.
Ppaches is good, if you don’t git enny
uv the pin feathers intew your lips.
Watermillions will suit ennybody that
iz satisfied with half sweetened drink ;
but the man who ken eat strawberrys,
be sprinkled with crushed sugar and
bespattered with cream, (at somebody
else’s expense,) and not lay his hands
on his stummuck, and thank the orthor
ov strawberrys and stummucks, and the
phellow who pays fur the strawberrys
iz a man with a wornout conscience—a
man whose mouth tastes like a hole in
the ground, and don’t care what goes
down it. —Josh Hillings.
In an interior town lives an odd char
acter named Ben Hayden. Ben has
some good points, but he will run his
face when and where he can, never pay.
In the same town lives Mr. Jacob Bond,
who keeps the store at the corner. Ben
had his score there, but to get his pay
was more than Mr. B. was equul to.
One day Ben made his appearance with
a bag and wheelbarrow.
‘Mr. Bond, I want to buy two bushels
of corn, and I want to pay the cash
for it.’
'Very well,’ said B.
And so they both go up stairs, and
B. puts up the corn, and Ben takes it
down, while Mr. B. stops to close up
his windows. When he got down he
saw old Ben some distunce from the
door, making for home.
‘Halloo, Ben ! Yon said you wanted
to pay the cash for that corn.’
Old Ben sat down on one handle of
his barrow, and cocking his head on
one side, said : ‘That’s all true, Mr. B.;
I do want to pay the cash for the corn
but I can't.’
A young dandy, who was just return
ed from abroad, appeared at a New
York ball last week, elegantly attired
in a full dress suit, with diamond studs
and sleeve buttons, point lace necktie,
three-buttoned gloves, hair powdered
with blonde-powder, French heels to
his boots, a strong suspicion of rogue
on hit cheeks, and a piece of court
plaster on his forehead. The girls
made so much fun of him that he retired
before supper.
A gentleman in search of a man to
do some work met on his way a lady,
not as young as she once was, and asked
her, ‘Can you tell me where I can find
a man?’ ‘No, I can not,’ she replied,
‘for I have been looking these twenty
years for one myself.
Jones says that he first met his wife
iu a storm, took her to the first ball in
a storm, popped the question in a
storm, lived Iris subsequent married
life in a storm, and buried her in
pleasat weather.
‘Doesn’t this lovely scene animate
you?’ asked Anna of her lover .•—‘No,’
he said, ‘nothing but yon can Anna-mate
me/ Oh, say yes, my darling.’ She
did say yes, and his cup of animation
was full.
‘Josiah, how many scruples are there
in a drachm ? Don’t know zur.’—
‘Well, recollect there are two.’ ‘O,
there is, hay ! Well daddy takes his
every morning without any scruples.’
An old minister, the other day,
asked a woman what could be done to
induce her husband to attend church.
*1 don't know,’ she replied, ‘unless you
were to put a pipe and jug of whisky
into the pew.’
A policeman asked a drunken zEthiop
whom he could scarcely see in the dim
light of a cell. ‘Are you colored ?’
‘Colored, no; dis yer chile born so.’
Wisconsin belles organize hunting
parties, take their little shot guns and
stride off to the woods, without any
horrid men to bother them.
