Fihe. —On last- Thursday night, the etc m saw
and grist mill at this place, owned by Mr. John T.
Stovall, was completely destroyed by fire.
The fire is supposed to have originated from the
engine of the mill, which was not discovered until
the whole build ng was enveloped in flames. There
■was no insurance on the property. The loss is esti
mated at $3,500.
We deeply sympathize with Mr. Stovall and
hope that he may soon recover from his loss.

Summer Hot. —The weather for several days past,
has been unusually warm for the season. Summer
has burst upon us without any preliminary softening
whatever; the trees and shrubs are clothed in lull

the roads aad streets look dusty aud hard, and Lazy-

We take pleasure in calliug attention of our read

Superior Court. —The adjourned term of the
Superior Court of this county, covened on Monday

cuit presiding.
The visiting bar in attendance are Gen. A. R.

Frank H. Miller, J. C. C. Black. J. B. Verdery,
and W. Davidson. D. C. Moore,Esq., of Appling,
also arrived with the above named gefitlemen.
Only a few eases on the common-law docket were
tried, most of which being continued by council.
Ihe criminal docket was reached on Tuesday morn
ing, but as we go to press beforo any of the cases
are tried we are unable to give the result of the
verdicts. It is confidently expected that all of the
“Hamilton Banditti” will be brought to trial at
this term.
The criminal docket is very heavy', and will prob
ably detain the Court the remainder of the week.
Judge Twiggs dispatches business promptly’, aud
we believe so far has given entire satisfaction.

Personal. —Mr. J. W. Anderson, of the Coving
ton Enterprise and the Thomson Advertiser, paid
us a visit a few days since looking well and happy.
Friend Anderson gives a good account of the En
terprise, though complaining somewhat of dull
times.
Mr. E. Nebhut, Traveling Agent of the Atlanta
Sun, shed a few ray’s of light from his smiling face
upon our office again this week. Mr. Nebhut is
visiting Thomson during the sitting of our Supe
rior Court in the interest of tho Sun. Ho is ma
king hosts of friends for the journal he represents
iu this part of the State; but wo cannot see how
such a paper with such an agent could do other
wise than prosper.
Rev. Mr. Brantly, agont of the Chronicle A Sen

journal.
The Cause of Temperance finds rodio of its
most insidious and dangerous foes iu tho many so
called “tonics’’ ami “appetizers,” made of cneap
whisky and refuse liquors, finished up to suit de
praved appetites, under the name of mediums, Dr.
Walker's California Vinegar Bitters are none of
these. They are not a beverage, but a genuine
medicine, purely vegetable, prepared from Cali
fornia herbs by a regular physician. For all dis
eases of the stomach, liver, kidneys, bladder, skin
and blood, they are an infallible and imrivall rem
edy.
A Very Good Platform.— “A Presi
dent without partyisin—
‘•An Army without a mission—
“A Congress without price, and
“A Supreme Judiciary withot poli
tics.”
The above very firm planks of a
sound platform we clip from a speech
of Gov. Gratz Brown, made before a
Mass Convention of Liberal Republicans,
held at Topeka, Kansas, a few days
ago. — NorJ'oll: Violinian.
. The platform is very good as far as it
goes, but to our mind it is like the play
of Hamlet with the Prince of Denmark
left out. A platform in which the Con
stitution has no part lacks one very
important Democratic element. We
would suggest as an additional plank to
Gov. Gratz Brown’s platform, a Con
stitution without Radical innovation or
interpretation. Indeed, we would be
willing to accept the Constitution in its
integrity, in letter and spirit, faithfully
administered, as a substitute for all the
platforms that have yet been framed.—
