Farm Mumic.
Is the morning, dim and sweet,
Slanting glints the sun;
The milkmaid trips with harrying feet,
The fanner’s day is begun.
Hark ! 'tis the mower blithe.
As he sharpens the tmsty scythe—
Crink. crank—crink, crank !
In the dewy morning air.
Ia the summer, near to noon,
Flaming climbs the sun,
The sythcblades Bweep to a pleasant time,
And the task goes merrily on.
Hark! shrill and fine,
The locust's hot-weather sign—
Cree-ee, cree-ee 1
In the blazing morning air.
In the summer day, at noon,
Bight over glares the sun,
The mowers sweep to a slower tune,
And wish the task was done.
Ilark ! a chattering loud,
Tis the noisy crows in a crowd,
Caw, caw, caw, caw !
Through all this hazy air.
The primrose wakes to blooir*
Downward rolls the sun,
The west is fire, the enst is gloom,
The mowers' task is dune.
And hist - hark!
What winds through tlio fragrant dark ?
Whippoorwill—whippoorwill t
Through all the evening air.
East and west aro gloom,
But the moon is rising fair,
And the night is fair, and the clover bloom
Sweetens all the air,
And, hist, hark I
Who oalls through the silver dark ?
Hoo, hoo, to whit, to hoo I
Through ail Lho midnight atr.
Krlu, Fnrcwoll I
O'er foam capped waves our gallant bark
Bounds on before tho wind,
And bears me from that doar old land
Thnt I mußt leave behind ;
And as I tread tho dock alone,
With sorrow-ladened heart,
Old thoughts of home throng round and cause
The bitter tears to start.
And memory brings mo back again
To happy school-hoy days,
When rambling o'er the meadows groen,
Wo sang light merry lays.
Alas! how diff'rcnt now my fnte—
How changed lho future scorns
From what I pictured thou
Iu boyhood’s bright day dreams.
And exilo driven from tho land
That Freedom called its own
Er%4!ulling chains of slavery
Wore o'er its children thrown.
No more to seo my native homo
Wlusro all my kindred dwell—
There's nothing left mo but to say,
Dear Erin, fore thee well.
But whereso'er my lot bo cast,
Whato’er my fato may bo,
Fond moiuorios of that dear old land
Shall over cling to mo.
And when my spirit wings its flight
From out its earthly shell,
My latest dying words shall bo
Dear Erin, fare thee well!

An -Appeal to tlio
People.
The Southern Cross Brotherhood, of
Richmond, Vit., has issued a circular
appealing to tho Southern people to aid
them in raising sufficient funds (several
.thousand dollars are needed) to remove
the bodies of Confederate soldiers from
Gettysburg to Hollywood Cemetery.—
The circular says;
Our order is composed of Confeder
ate soldiers alone who had an unblem
ished record during the war. Its ob
jects are to perpetuate the memory and
heroism of our fallen comrades, to aid
the families of our former brethren in
arms who need assistance, and to try
and preserve the truth and purity of
histoiy.
VVe are now specially engaged in the
sacred duty of raising funds to assist
Hollywood Memorial Asociation in re
moving the remains of our noble dead
from Gettysburg and other points,
where they are neglected and mistreat
ed, to Hollywood Cemetery, near this
city, where, through tho untiring ef
forts of our ladies, an honorable resting
place is provided and an enduring mon
ument erected to their memory; and
where, protected and cared for, they
can yearly receive the honor bestowed
on our ‘.Memorial Day,’ in decorating
their graves with flowers.’ There are
yet at Gettysburg the remains of near
one thousand bodies ; they are from
nearly all tho States; and when we
say, in some instances, the heartless
wretches of the vicinity where they
fell and lie are ploughing their bones
about as if they were dogs, it is enough
to make the blood of decent humanity
boil, and the pocket—of all who are
not false to feeling—false to principle
false to a cause once dear—open to
remove these heroes from such indigni
ty and inhumanity*
Into whatever hands this appeal falls,
we beg you to aid us in this cause, in
which our whole soul is enlisted. Ask
your friends to aid you. Do not hesi
tate because you cannot give much;
remember, as drops make an ocean, so
many small contributions will make a
goodly sum

Washington, July I* —One of the
most extraurdinary affairs ever known
occurred in this city on Saturday even
ing last among the fashionable commu
nity of Capitol Hill. Some time ago, it
will be rcollected, it was announced in
this correspondence that Carit. F. F.
Buckley, of Natick, Mass., had present
ed Gen. Butler and Henry Wilson with
two handsome canes made from the old
ship Kearsage, and that the recipients
thereof had been greatly pleased with
the to/cens 'of regard. Handsome and
dashing himself, it appears that the
Captain won the affections of the cherri
est-lipped lady on the Capitol Hill, a
Miss Emma , who, while youthful
in appearance, is yet on the point of
rounding thirty-five, and surrounded
with that matronly empresament which
is peculiarly enchanting to tho widower
and the man of the world. His suit
progressed ; ho was accepted, and prom
ised his lady-love an endowment of a
three thousand dollar residence in Na
tick. The bridal outfit was procured
—the trousseau, as the French say. It
was elaborate and ornamental in every
E articular. Presents of silverware,
rooches, diamonds, bracelets, pictures
and baubles were purchased by their
friends, and at last the day was set, the
minister engaged, the curds sent out,
‘all went merry as a marriage bell.’
The supper which had been gotten
up was unusually tasteful. Elegant
ladies crowded the parlors of the pater
nal residence, and the bride stood in her
chamber in hopeful expectancy. But
the bridegroom did not come lie sud
denly and mysteriously disappeared.
The minister, annoyed beyond express
ion, the charming lady driven into hys
terics, and tho richly attired company
disappointed beyond measure, wuited
and waited in vain. A cariage was
sent for the groom, and the fact trans
pired that he was not in town. These,
in brief, are the interesting points of
this extraordinary affair. Captain
Buckley has not yet been heard from.
When ho came here, the gossips say,
he represented himself as worth a largo
sum of money, and was told before he
sought her hand that Miss Emma
held in her own right between $30,000
and SIO,OOO. With this idea the match
procoeded, but now that it has so ab
ruptly terminated, it is said that one
of his acquaintances assured him that
tho lady was comparatively penniless.
A somewhat remarkable fact in conne j
tion with the affair is that the lady was
once engaged to bo married to tho sur
geon of the same regiment in which
Captain Buckley held command, and
that on the very day tho wedding was
to have taken place the surgeon die I.

-A Fvesidcut for Thirty-Six
llourH.
Kansas has a curiosity in the shape
of a gentleman who, without being
elected President or Vice ' President of
tlio United Stnt.es, claims to have been
President for thirty-six hours. His
name is David R. Atchison. He was
temporary President of the Senate aud
acting Vico President during the last of
Pierce’s term. Pierce’s term expired
at midnight Sunday. Buchanan was
inaugurated at noon Monday. Atchison
says that he succeeded to tlio Presiden
cy ns President of tlio Senate when Mr.
Pierce’s term was out. Ho thus hu
morously describes his administration :
‘But I had no realization of my high
position until about 10 o’cloc/c Sunday
morning. We had been hard at work
in the Senate finishing up business, and
having lost much sleep, I would pro
bably Slave slept all day, had I not
been walled up by some personal
friends, who came to congratulate me,
and secure positions for certain parties.
In order to do everything in proper
style, I appointed a full Cabinet; and
then it is said my administration was
the most successful and popular one
ever known, there not being a removal
or appointment during my whole term.’
[Constitution.
A Dastardly Outrage. —We learn
from the Charleston News of yesterday
that a diabolical attempt was made on
Sunday, by some unknown parties, to
throw a passenger train on the Savan
nah and Charleston Railroad from the
track, at Saltkaliatchie bridge, by laying
several bars of railroad iron across the
track in a manner that would have pre
cipitated the engine, and perhaps the
whole train, into the river. Fortunate
ly, the obstructions were observed by
the engineer in time to stop the train
and remove them. Proper measures
have been taken to have the culprits
arrested. —Sa ran nan News.
A Heavy Docket. —The criminal
business of the Superior Court was yes
terday closed, and this morning the civil
docket will be taken up. We under
stand there are six hundred cases ou the
docket, a number of which are of a
very important character, involving
other interests besides money. Our le
gal fraternity will have plenty of work
during the balance of the term. This
heavy docket is a good thing for the
lawyers if not for the respective parties
whose names figure on its pages.—Sa
