lßtere«tioir Letter.
St. Lous, Mo., Oct. l«t, 1872.
Editor McDuffie Journal :—l went to
Atlanta and on the following Tuesday
was present at the Great State Demo
cratic meeting, so advertised. True,
considerable money had been expended
in preparing for the meeting, but all
the inducements held out failed to at
tract a crowd, and all the eloquence of
the distinguished orator failed most
signally to arouse any enthusiasm. 1
attended the meeting, both day and
night, and left Georgia fully convinced
that it was impossible to get up any
enthusiasm for Mr. Greeley outside of
those who were on the lookout for some
office, and lam not surprised at it; for
all know that the Southern people
have no love for Greeley, and if they
vote for him it will be because his elec
tion promises more for the South than
Grant’s. We have tried Grant, and
know that he will not do. Wo have
seen that he is incompetent for the of
fice of president, and we have seen fur
thermore, that be has surrounding him,
the most corrupt ring that has ever dis
graced any administration. On the
other hand, Mr. Greeley promises a re
form—promises amnesty, equal rights
and justice to all—promises to make
his appointments, irrespective of party,
from among the heriest and capable
men, and it is by virtue of these prom
ises that I believe the peop'e of the
grand old State, (my native land, and
proud lam of it.) Georgia will vote
for Mr. Greeley in November next.
Leaving Atlanta on the 24th, I reach
ed this city in 36 hours, via Nashville
and Columbus Ky. Here I found every
body talking politics and eager to have
the news from all sections. Nearly
every morning some of the dailys have
glowing accounts of some ward meet
ing of the city.
On Friday night last there was a
grand parade and torch light procession
of all the Democratic clubs in the city,
the occasion being the raising of the
flag at the Central County Committee
headquarteis. The processions was
seen four miles long, all dressed in ap
propriate uniforms, each carrying his
torch, accompainied by about a doz
en brass bands. Thousands of specta
tor* thronged the streets, and upon
the whole it was a creditable display in
behalf of Mr. Greeley. Speech making
and considerable enthusiasm were man
ifested|lor the ‘ SngeofChappaqua.” The
crowd was so dense I could not get in
hearing distance of the speakers. If
erery State in the union was ascertain
for Greeley as Missouri, Mr. Grant had
as well commence preparing now to
make his exit from the white House.
The great St. Louis Fuir will com
mence on the 3d inst., and continue
ten days. Already the crowd has com
menced coming iu, and by this time
next week their will no doubt be 50,000
strangers in the city. The liberality of
the merchants and manufacturers of St.
Louis in offering SIO,OOO premiums
for cotton will no doubt attract a great
many representative planters from the
South, and I am glad to suy that a bale
of McDuffie county cotton will be on
exhibition, and from the simple which
I have seen, it stands a very good
chance for a premium.
Great preparations have been made
for the Fair by the officers and citizens
generally, and there is every reason to
believe that it will be the largest gath
ering of tbe kind ever held in the U. S.
I believe, too, we are to be honored (or
imposed upon) with a visit from his ex
cellency the president of the United
State—so-called.
Till then I am
Yours &c.,
R, S. R.
Ladies sometimes do not value their
husbands as they ought. They not nn
frequent y learn the value of a good hus
band, for the first time by the loss of
him. Yet the husband is the very roof
/tree of the edifice—the keystone called
•home. He is the bread winner of the
family—its defense and glory—the be
ginning and the ending of the golden
clgin of life which surrounds it—its
coiDsello r > law-giver, and its king.
At a lengthy conference between
Grant and Blaine at the Fifth Avenue
HtfJiri, Tuesday, it was decided to send
the! whole Cabinet to stump Ohio im
