HOME MATTERS,
3. L. & W. M. Hardaway pays the highest mar
ket prices for cotton.
Muj. M. B. Kitrell has arrived withj, a car load
of horses and mules from Tennessee. We know
the Maj., and can vouch for the stock he brings to
this market. Go to Lansdale’s stable and see his
stock. He has brought some of the best stock
ever brought to this market.
J. L. & M. W. Hardaway have a large lot of fine
Family Groceries on hand, which they are offering
vicious exchange says ; ‘*The fall fashions are
improving the stocks of old hoopskirts in the back
alleys.
McDuffie Hussars at the Fair. —A number of
the members of the McDuffie Hussars, who have
been practicing Tilting for some time, left this
place on yesterday morning for Augusta, to con
test for tournament honors, the presont week.—
We sincerely hope that our boys may bear away
the white plume.
Large lot of Augusta and Graniteville knitting
thread for sale cheap, by J. L. & W. M. Harda
way.
The finest lot of willow-ware ever brought to
Thomson, for sale at J. L. & W. M. Hardaway’s.
Personal. —On Saturday last our town was vis
ited by a good many prominent gentlemen, among
others, Capt. C. E. McGregor, of the Warrenton
Clipper, looking quite as genial and advocating
even “Straighter” Democracy than ever.
Also Stockbridge Florence, Esq., a rising young
lawyer, who has located near Saw Dust.
The weather is pleasant, rain needed, and things
are altogether dusty.
J. L. A M. W. Hardaway have a large lot of
cheese and Mackerel, which they are offering for
sale at Augusta prices.
Fire Engine. —We want to keep the matter of
purchasing a Fire Engine before our people. We
implore our citizens not to let the enterprise fail
this time as has often been the case. Mr. It. W.
H. Neal, Secretary of the Company, has the sub
scription list, ready to jot down any contribution
tendered. And here, let ns remark, that be de
serves great credit for the energy he has displayed
in the matter. Citizens, think over the matter, and
determine to protect your property from tho great
Demon, fire.
Another Gin house Burned.—We regret to
learn that the ginhouse of Mr. E. R. Harrison, of
this county, was burned on Saturday last. Fifteen
bales of cotton, belonging to Mr. Homer Sturgis,
were burned in the house. The origin of the fire
is supposed to have been the friction of the saws.
Mr. Strgis’ loss is estimated at fifteen hundred*
dollars, and the loss sustained by Mr. Harrison is
the value of his ginhouse, gin, <fcc. Our farmars
cannot be too careful with their ginhouses, as this
is the second ginhouse burned in this county with,
in the last two weeks.
Fires taste good these mornings and evenings.
If a man is very much in debt, is it a sign that
he is creditable ?
James A Gray & Co — This magnificent House,
situated at Nos. 191 and 19G, Broad street, Augusta’
Ga., has a Mainmouth advertisement in this issue,
covering one entire page of our paper, showing
conclusively, that they have the capital and cour
age to let people know the superior inducements
they have to offer for their custom. We had tho
pleasure of being shown through tho great store
house a short time since by Mr. Gray, in person,
and were simply dazzeled aud astonished by the
beauty and magnitude of the establishment. All
who have examined tho structure and admirable
arrangement of this costly House, and the almost
boundless quantity, the quality and the assortment
of beautiful Dry Goods there displayed, unhesita
tingly pronounce all to be infinitely superior to any
other in the South; an Establishment of which we
are justly proud Read their advertisement, and
when you visit the city, be sure to call on James

Our Circulation. —For the recent heavy in
crease in our subscription list, we return many
thanks to onr friends and patrons. We are de
termined to spare no labor or expense in making
the Journal the very best country paper in the
State. Now is the time for every man, who feels
any interest in the improvement and prosperity of
our section, to aid ns with a still more generous
patronage. It is perfect nonsense for any

we are grateful for so much assistance ana

many recent inconveuiencies and delays, occasioned
principally by an increase of business and sickness
among our printers.
This week, to accommodate our patrons, we are
under the necessity of issuing a Supplement; in a
few weeks, however, we will be prepared to dis
patch any and all work with which we may be fa

Mrs. Leckie, Broad street, Augusta, Ga., an
nounces to the ladies of McDuffie and surrounding
counties, that she is still at her old stand, and has
purchased for the Fall trade tho finest stock of
Millinery goods ever brought to Augusta. It is
really’a treat to look at her stock of beautiful goods.
See her advertisement, and remember to go and
examine her prices when you visit Augusta.
