_THI WAM&TOK GAZETTE. WASHINGTON, Gi, MAY 8, 1867. READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. w The Semi- Annual County Court for the county of Wilkes sits on Monday next. Jurors, parties and Witnesses will take t otice. er See the notice of a New Store 4 by Levi & AfHn, at the Express Office. They promise to have everything, generally, and some things in particular, at a reduced price. Goodies. —P. H. Norton has just come from Savannah, where, it seems, he had good news from Havana, in the shape of all Boris of tropi cal fruits. If you want “goodies,” call on him. G. P. Cozabt deserves the thanks of the com munity for putting in perfect order all the pub lic side walk adjoining his residence. If others would do half as much, what a neat town we would be. Warning. —Some two weeks ago, in Early county, two men, Gat and Webb, were turkey hunting in the same body of woods. Both were good yelpers, and instead of calling up game, they called each other up. Mr. Webb caught a glance of Mr. Gay in the undergrowth, mistook him for a turkey and fired upon him, inflicting a fatal wound, of which the unfortunate man died in a few days. Turkey hunters will take warning. ir We recommend our friends, on going to Augusta, to call at Oxaham's, 386 Brood st.,(near ly opposite the Planter’s Hotel) and examine his new stock of Clothing. He has just commenced business, so you may depend on everything in bis store being of the latest and best style. It is almost useless to request any one to go there, for when they go to Augusta they are certain to hear of him, as hie prices are creating a regular sensation There is another attraction there for any one from this neighborhood. The presence of A. N. Eumcxdson will be a guarantee they will be well treated. Go and see the goods and examine the prioes and we have no doubt the result. J/ile Posts are very desirahla companions on the roads, as we jog along. They can't speak, and yet can tell us plainly at what rate we are getting on and how lar off home ,is, besides fur* nishing subject for much profitable reflection about our journey of life, etc. We regret to learn that many of these silent, yet voluble mon itors of the road in various directions through the county are thrown down, or broken. Will not our newly appointed commissioners of roads ami all public spirited citizens generally through the country attend to having them ropaii ed and re' placed. They are well worth the little care they require. , Kxtertainment. —The Ladies of Washington and vicinity are, as wo learn, preparing a public Entertainment, to come off some ten days hence, the proceeds to be applied to the relief of the needy poor. The exact nature of the affair, wo bare not learned, and so cannot say whether there will he Tableaux, a Concert, a Fair, Sup per, 6t what—only «<; have heard sweet whis pers of Ice Cream, Sheri-lit and “chicken fixius." We can warrant the public, from tlie clever hands sud kind hearts engaged in the mat ter, that something real good is su-e to come; and considering the purpose to which the pro c eds are dedicated, we shall endeavor to go there with a good appetite and a full purse, and just let happen to us what will. We expect to give full notice of the matter next week Something Sweet. —The handsomest, most tasty and most fragrant boquetof this sweet sea son of flowers, ,/e found upon the counter if Messrs. Aenui.d, Green ifc Cos, a few mornings ago. Homan's nimble fingers, only, could have arranged it, and those of a pretty one at that.— It was Mr. Gbees who invited us in to examine it, and it was Ins also who assured us 'twas a com pliment “from a lady, to the firm.” But as Mr. Green is the only single man in the firm, we ad judge him to be the Adonis whose charms won this compliment. Arnold, Green A Cos. area popular firm. The ladies have taken both its extremes. Arnold and C'o.are married and poor Green is the “hast rose of summer.” But his head is cool, and he won't bloom alone very long, if we read the signs aright. He is a fascinating wretch 1 every inch of him! The WARM weather is coming on apace, an l we are reminded of the deplorable fact tiiat our town has no Ice House, nor an Ice Cream Saloon, nor a Soda Fount. llow can we survive, without at least one of these indispensable luxuries) Is there no enterprising genius in oor midst to un dertake such a business i Li*Moni>ron A Cos., a •oda fount is a legitimate fixture in a drug store. What say you) Arnold, Green A Cos., you are enterprising and active, and you are addicted to doing good things, anil doing them up well.— Couldn’t you make a cool hundred on ice cream this summer I Foreman, you are great on “get ting out” from the North all sorts of articles your customers may call for. Can't you get out ice to keep u« Rebels down to a suitable temperature under military rule i Come, gentlemen 1 all of you, can’t you “warm up” to it before June comes) If you will do something for us, there shall be no end to the good words we’U say for you. And we will send the foreman aronnd af ter the “Editorial compliments”—you know.— And if you doo’t, we’ll send the Devil after you with a sharp stick. OUR CEMETERY. A gentleman told us the other day, that he had just returned from a -walk through the cem etery, and that he had found there, a negro wo man with an axe, cutting pea-sticks from the small growth in the enclosure, some of which were of the wild growth, in the unoccupied parts, and some were from the aspens, lombardy pop lars aud other shrubbery set out for ornament on the various lots She had not been particu lar in her selection, but was cutting whatever was of suitable size for her purpose. When warned off, she readily left, and seemed not to know that she was engaged in a serious violation of propriety find of the law. This statement we know will shock the feel ings of many persons who have laid their dead to rest there; and much else, equally disagreea - ble, will be discovered when more attention is directed to that, now too much neglected spot. We know that until recently, when Mr. Fore man had the steps built, the gates were always open, and cattle ranged there at will, cropping, trampling, and destroying everything like orna and mental shrubbery or flowers that could be place I there. And we know too of broken marble, and stolen flowers and stones and shells, placed there by tender hands, over the sacred homes of their dead. These things outrage the holiest feelings of our natures, and ought not to be permitted.— They are permitted, or submitted to, only be cause it is no one’s business to protect the place from sacrilege, and not because there is a respect able individual in the community who does not deprecate the wantonness of the wretches who do the trespass. He are not wanting, as a com munity, in that tender sensibility about the care of our dead which has characterized human na ture always. How the evil is to be remedied, is a hard ques tion to answer, being, as we are, without corpor ation officers, and deprived of the power of elect ing them, by military orders. To trust to volun tary effort from individuals will uot answer, as the past and present proves; because the care of the enclosure demands labor and money, in great er amount than those most interested can fur nish. Nothing can be done, without concert of action among those who really are concerned in the matter; and nothing then, unless competent persons will accept the charge of the enclosure, as a cemetery committee; which office will be without emoluments or perquisites; but, undoubt edly, will yield a rich harvest of earnest thanks from ninny pure hearts, to those who fill it well If such a committee could ia any manner be agreed upon by our citizens, of good men, and who should be fully sustained in their efforts, by contributions of money and labor (procured through a finance committee) we hope something would be done toward the protection of the bu rylog-ground. It is in vain to expect any good result without money and labor ; for everything there is overgrown and dilapidated. The enclo sure is larger than the community will require in many years, in all probability, and could safely be reduced to one half its size. If it had been done in time, much of the present appearance of neglect and overgrowth could have been avoided, by selling off laiger lots, in lieu of the present very small divisions, for each family would then have cared as well for its portion as now. At present, the only remedy is to reduce the size of the enclosure. And we do not believe it can then be kept in good order, without haviug a reg ular attendant, to overlook the whole, and keep off tresspassers and depredators. Perhaps if a small cabin were built, and that part of the ground which ehould bo excluded from the en closure were assigned for a garden for cultiva tion, either Uncle Jarrett or someone like him could be had for a keeper, with but little com pensation. The e are but suggestions, and the objection is, that they involve outlay of money; and that ia what we consider unavoidable. The merest fraction of what wo spend about the houses of the living would put the tenements of the dead in perfect order; and no one would deny a feeling of supreme gratification in having them so. Wo owe it to our dead, and in discharging the sacred obligation our own hearts will be made purer and better. aM v r V 7,> -H? his hair; his gizzard fee^H - fl I jn •>••• ' ,i v j- 15 t \ i mm , V.‘, 7 V,'A doctor B I jSHpf • > .1 ”9fl Vf,''-* \- 1 "r --home on de old plant at de cotton, and tend de cane, and never link of froedom again as I used to did before. The darkey ceased; the tears from his eyes stood on his black cheek bone, f lie sun’s hot rays fell on his head, and a hearty wish that he might “go dead” was the lust we heard him groan. Find Fault in Pa in ate. —Find fault, when you must find fault, in private, if possible, and some time after the offense, rather than at the time. The blamed are less inclined to resist when they are blamed w ithout witnesses. Both parties are calmer, and the accused person may be struck with the forbearance oi the accuser, who has seen the fault and watched for n private and pro per time for mentioning it. Never be harsh or unjust with your children or servants. Fii mness, with a gem knees of demeanor and a rtgard to the feelings, constitutes that authority which is always respected and valued. If you have any cause to complain of a servant, never speak has tily; wait, at all events, until you have had time to reflect on the nature of the offense. The Days of the Week. —The following is a pretty version of a Devonshire superstition, which from its language appears to be connect ed with the North : Monday’s bairn is fair of face; Tuesday’s bairn is fu’ of grace; Wednesday’s bairn’s the child of woe; Thursday's bairn has far to go; •Friday's bairn is loving and giving; Saturday’s bairn works Imrd for his living; But the bairn that is born on the Sabbath day 1s lucky, and bonny, and wise, and gay. Curious Sensation. —A lady says the first time she was kissed she felt like a tub of roses swimming in honey, cologne, nutmegs and cran berries. She felt also as if something was run ning through her nerves on feet of diamond?, es corted by several little cupids in chariots drawn by angels, shaded by honey-suckles, and the whole spread with melted rainbows. A native of the Green l9le of Erin called at a chemist’s shop with a perscription, the prepara tion of which he watchvid with considerable curi osity. “What’s that, any way ?” finally asked the cus tomer. “This,” said the'obliging apothecary, “is tinc ture cemicitag race in osa, and liniment ofsapor-is, cantbarides and opii.” A look of bewilderment changed to one of grave concern, as die Irishman made the in quiry : “And what is the price ?** ‘ Sixpence,” was the reply. ‘.‘Bejabers,”said Pat. much relieved,“l thought two such names as that would cost me at least five shillings,” A simple way to detect the presence of mois ture in the surface of the earth, is to wear boots with a hole in the soles, or sit on the ground out of doors for two hours, and then calculate ac cording to the degree of dampness in the seat of your breeches. A Dutchman in Canada had two pigs a large and a small one. The smaller one being the elder, he was trying to explain to a customer, and did it in this wise; “The little pig is the piggist.” Upon which his wife, assuming to cor rect him, said : “Y* u will please excuse him; he no speak as good English as me; he no mean the little pig is the piggest but the youngest pig the oldest.” A woman being enjoined to try the effect of kindness on ner husband, and being told that it wonld heap coals of fire upon his head, replied that he had tried “bilin’ water” and it didn,t do a bit of good. She was rather doubtful about the efficacy of “coals.” SPRING GOODS. BOUGHT FOB CM After tlie recent decline in Northern markets, and will be sold at a small advance for Cash only.
