Tlic premium list is, ncfcessnrily very limited, this year, and the premiums offered not as valuable as they will lie in the subsequent exhibitions The moneyed value of a premium is at last, of very little importance compared to the satisfaction of winning u prize. It is desired, for the purpose of making the Fair as attractive as possible, that every one having any article of interest should bring it in and exhibit it. It is particulur'y desired that all line stock or stock of rare breeds should be brought. There will Ire no entrance fee charged for any article which is put on exhfbiton un less the article is entered for a premium. The energetic managers are rapidly im proving the grounds, anil have the build ings nearly, if not quite complete, and offer cvefy inducement to our citizens to come forward and ass’st in this prais wortfiy undertaking. Gard ner was employed, for the two past months, as foreman in this office. On last Sunday morning Ire was missing, and upon Inves tigation it was found that lie had, during the last few days of his sojourn, obtained a nice business suit of clothes on credit from one of our merchants, besides other articles of greater or less value from oth ers. He txrrroteed several small sums ot money from different parties on the credit of the proprietors of the Gazette., but without their, knowledge or consent. On Sunday morning he took a departure (not a 'c\r one we opine) carrying with him a dou1)le-barrcllcd shot gun and a pocket case of surgical instruments belonging to Dr. Andrews, editor of this paper. Mr. Henry Vickers went in pursuit ot him on Monday morning, and after tracking him like an old detective, came upon him that night, asleep in a negro cabin within a short distance of Union Point. He arrest ed him and brought him back to this place on Tuesday afternoon, and turned him over to tl»e proper authorities. Through the ignorance and litter inefficiency of the authorities hereabouts, he made his escape on Wednesday morning and departed again. Dr. Andrews recovered his gun, but not his surgical instruments. Gardner is about five feet 8 or 0 inches high, had a heavy moustache and imperial, speaks tliick and rather indistinctly, and had on “when he left here” a suitof brow* clothes. He is very plausible, of good ad dress, and a thorough and most accom plished printer. He is about forty-four or five years ot age, though rather yonng looking. We warn all printer* and news paper men against him, as he fc a mopt consumatc scoundrel, devoid of principie or gratitude. Puss him round.
