COME ONE come all and satisfy your selves that we are offer ing greater inducements than any other House in town. Wasliugton Friday Mossing, February 14,1573. FARAiiNGoperations arc commencing in this section and tlie indications arc that a very heavy cotton crop win be planted to the exclusion of grain. We would urge *iur farmers to plant corn, oat3 and other j forage crops. Cotton may fail or the price be low, and not money enough be ol tained to buy corn and meat. VnttY little wheat has been sown in this county. Our farmers should not fail to plant com. Messrs. Huberts A Wvlie have form ed a copartnership in the dry goods and grocery business, and have opened at the old stand of Roberts & Fitzpatrick. This is a strong firm and isbouud to do well. The above gentlemen aro agents for tliat excellent catton and corn producer., Bar ry’s Fertilizer. O 9 ♦- The Atlanta Constitution is a good paper. Wo publish a prospectus for 1873. We can commend it to those who wish to take an Atlanta Daily. We have no ob jection to publishing a reasonable adver tisement occasionally for our eotempora rics, but tliiuk that some of our friends ami brother journalists ask a little too much of us when they desire nearly or quite a column of our space. We I rve but little room to spare, indeed our paper is not large enough for its circulation and the amount of advertising patronage which we receive. So, hereafter, we would ask a little condensation in the matter we are requested to publish. In Chattanooga. —Wilkes county peo ple are to be found everywhere. Some of the hoys, we see, have strayed off to Chat tanooga and gone into business. Chatta nooga has, therefore, obtained some valu able citizens, for Wilkes boys are always good boys and always do well and arc in variably an addition and improvement to any place. For further information on this subject we refer our readers to the card of Strother, Ramsey and Burdett. These young men are now doing a gen eral Grocery and Provision business. We have tasted of some ot the provisions sold by this establishment and we can and do pronounce them good. Our old war friend, Dr. George Burdett, did not for get us at Christinas time, hut sent us a can of savory sausage meat which tickled our palate and renewed our strength for several days. To all who desire anything in their line, we say, send to the Wilkes county boys, and you will not regret it. b 0 p ft) c i ) H* P Q 4 0 0 0 4 H* 0 QD vj P 5= 4 P s p H . vy v# re -“"V / H- 1 # /-V \V m 0 H V rs s— i H H* K-J t— 1 7: VJI M H A* fcr ch GO m pi '0 ) r SI o 3 Meningitis. —This disease has, within the past week, made its appearance in this county. Three n« roes living about lour miles from this place, near Beaverdam Creek, were attacked almost siiuultauc ottdy last week. One died within twen ty-four hours from the time when first at tacked. The other two are still living ami Lopes m e entertained of their recove ry. At the same time another negro was attacked on a place about a mile ami a half from the village, lie is reported to have recovered. A little boy, child of Mrs. Johnson, a widow, was taken sick with thC disease a few days ago, and, at the present writing, little hopes are enter tained of his recovery. Tills is the only ease which has made its appearance in this place as yet. Some of our citizens are considerably alarmed, and are under the impression that it is some new and terrible disease and that it is highly contagious. The disease is by no means new, having been known for ages beyond the records of sci ence. It has been known under a variety of names, such as heaa pleurisy, spotted fever, Ac. It is not at ail contagious.— There is very little catise.for alarm as very few are gcneially attacked in any com munity where it prevails, and there is scarcely a winter passes that double the number of deaths do not occur in any sec tion from other causes than are occasioned by meningitis during the severest epidem ics. Nor is there any use in thinking of going away to avoid it, as it seems to be prevailing all over the country. To those of our country friends who may have oc casion to visit this place, we would say there is not the slightest risk in doing so, as the disease, unlike some others, is not confined to towns, but seems to prevail as much or more in the country. Four of the five cases of which we hayc heard were in the country. By taking the ordinary precautions against cold, such as avoidance ot undue exposure, keeping the feet dry, refraining from getting overheated, &c., very little danger of an attack is to he apprehended. Most, if not all the cases which have oc curred can be traced directly to exposure to cold or rain. Commissioners’ Court.— The evil doers have had a long respite and Commission ers’ Court items have been scarce witli us for some time. The new Board elected in January refused to serve. The old Board therefore will, according to law, hold over. The confusion incident to the refusal by the new Board, created an in tcregnum. - The old Board, however, (which, by the way, is the best we have ever had) has got into harness again, and we warn all wild young men to keep out ot their clutches. On last Monday the Board met and had Felix O'Neal, Abe Robinson and Willie Evans, a South Carolina nigger, before them charged with creating a disturbance at one of the churches of the colored peo ple during service on last Sunday. O'Neal and Evans were find $3 and costs and Robinson $1 and costa. The Board was light on these culprits because they havn’t got their hands in yet and are not warmed up to the work. They also took into consideration the fact that Willie is a Sonth Carolina nigger and has not been over here long enough to get civilized. Fertilizers —An immense quantity of commercial fertilizers has been brought to this place and is still flowing in on every tr.iin. The depot is blocked with the bar rels and the bags and the air is tilled with the sweet perfume, and tile gentle breezes waft it to long distances. This indicates much cotton planting.— Our farmers will do well to put some of these compounds wider grain crops. New Apportionment Bill. As this bill has passed the House, on Thursday, it provides three Representa tives caeh to the counties of Bibb, Burke. Chatham, Fulton, Houston and Richmond Two Representatives to the counties of Bartow, Cobb, Clarke, Coweta, Carroll, Decatur, Dougherty. Floyd, Green, Gwin nett, Hancock, Harris, Jackson, Jefferson, Macon, Monroe, Meriwether, Muscogee, Oglethorpe, New ton, Stewart, Sumpter, Talbot, Thomas, Troup, Washington and Wilkes. One Representative each to one hun dred and three counties. Bill takes effect after expiration ot tqruis of members of the present General, Assembly. There was quite a debate or Colfax’s request for a special committee to-day, Pratt supporting it earnestly and Thur man arguing that ns Vice-President, lie was a National officer, and the only reme dy, if he is guilty of the charges against him, was impeachment, which rested with the House of Representatives.
