These six farmers exhibit, in the aggregate, Four hundred and forty eight specimens of home products. For a county fair we think this is difficult to surpass. A ’srge number of entries li-ive la-cn made since the ids v id vss made o t. At our usual hour for going to press, late Thursday night, every inch ol space in the lair building is occupied. Corn vs. Cotton. —Rev. \V. 1., Wont ton, of this county, having retd the strit t urcs of the Gazette on the subject of hanging cotton stalks to the trees around the square, brought in amt presented to the editor of this paper eight ears ot coin containing seien different varieties. Now, there is some sense in bringing corn or anything else that can lie eaten to this office, and we have striven a lane nail in the facing of our office duo. where corn to any amount may be hung for exhibition. OtR Job Office i» nmv doing a splendid business, and we challenge the priming establishments of the Stale to a compaii son of work. Wc are prepared to do all kinds of job printing at the -hottest notice, in the neatest styles and at as cheap rates us can be obtained in the State. Business, wedding, visiting cards, bill heads, letter Iteads, cards on envelopes, circulars, hand bills, pamphlets or any thing else can be printed at the Gazette office. There is no necessity to send to a distance to have such work done. Specimens may lie seen at the office at any time. The Fair.- The third annual fair of iix.. -n .i wf-L-yi tvw 111,1 ''’ 4 r u) Ass cia ion'' opened at the grounds in this place «m last Tuesday morning and will clo-e to day. The exhibition has surpassed all expec tation so far a> the "Umber ami merit of the srtjtles entered and on exhibition are concerned. The attendance, however, has liecn tar less than at any previous iair of the association. This is accounted lor from the fact that the money panic lias made it very hard for the people to affottl the expense of leaving home and coming to the fair. It has also Iteen the very finest weather tor picking cotton and the farmers have been compelled to stay at home and attend to the gathering ol their crops. The entries are too numerous for us to give anything like a detailed account of them. We hope to give a lull list o^ev ery thing entered next week. Harper’s Magazine.] Probably the poprfnr estimate or im pression of tl.c moral and soria! iltnrac teii~tie3 of Mr. Calhmm war more mistak en limit that of any other conspicuous matt in the country He was regarded as a sortot abstiaction—mold formalist, with, out tenderness of feeling ot warmth ol heart -a designing, ambitious hum. whose aspiration* lor power »nd schemes of aggrandizement so absorbed hint as to c till his natural affection and unfit hint lord micstic life. In respect to his intel- Vctti and structure, the country had fallen into no such fundamental error. It was supposed that Ins heretical notions oft government and some ot his fanciful the ories were supported with ingenuous soph ist y. but hi. va-t powers of mind and great public ervicei were generally recog nized. The troth is, he was not only a more purely intellectual man than any ot his contemporaries, but in private life he was genial, courteous and affectionate, with the playfulness and simplicity of a child. In the com puny-of ladies and young , people nf Ixtjth sexes, he was one of the 'mist i ttensling and charming men in t! e world, lie was always natural, cordial j and earnest, anil adapted his conversation i to the taste and capacity of those who surrounded him with exquisite tact and grace. lie Was never demonstrative or vo.uolc in soci iv. Inti even Mr. Clay him-' sc f was no gieater favorite than Ml. Cal-' houn with those who knew and appreci ated hint. Unlike Mr. Clay, lie was pa tient of contradiction, and invited the most critical examination of his doctrines and opinions, confident of his ability to uphold them against all comers. lie was fund of metaphysics, and in.the acuteness and subtlety of his mtiiiil he hail no equal among his contemporaries. Probably he more resembled Mr. Jefferson in that re spect than any other man of Iris day. His style, both its an orator and writer* was teise and condensed to a degree rare ly equaled. He was the most ilitli -n t man to report in Congress. He spo'-e with extraordinary fluency and rapidity, at times uttering short, pregnant sentences that had the force of a round shot, nnd then running into a prolonged ami in volved sentence that required a sharp man to follow and comprehend. He was always courteous in debate, never min gling person ility with argument unless in i repelling injurious imputations, lie was generous, catholic, ami placable; ami when Mr. Clay made what he announced to be his tar well -pi ecu in tliu t Smite in 1843-44, Mr. Calluiu t who had never f ecu reconciled to him since their great conflict iu 1838, gave way to his feelings anit shed tears like a woman ; while Col onel Ucntou, who was at dag .ers drawn with Mr. Clay most ot the time, remained unmoved, manifesting no more emotion than if he had been made of cast iron and this, too, when Mr. Clay tendered him the o.ive branch. —From "Recollections of an Old Stager." A special fn m l crlin hints at finan cial troubles in Germany. Fancy stocks and bank shares are not saleable, and sonic have fallen twenty ptrcent. There is some talk of government interference.
