OF CHRISTMAS IN WASHI NOTON.—The day on which ctiridlmiH counncmoratc the. With of \tiw people m least » i, fflet that It comnicmoratcil anything itljjprtk'ulnr, or ae though they Cuiled to remember when it enine. There wad an effort made by some of the merchant, to get the consent of nil parties to *us|icii<l bu.liic. and close up for the day. Rut the result was precisely as it wm last year, one single house would not consent that its doors should tie closed, and oouacquently the others would not. It was not the same concern which remained obdurate through all the persuading last year. That Arm, after tieing persuaded con- sented to unite with the other, and to close up on Christmas day. Hut one other house would not. It due. seem that there could not have been uny very great and earnest desire ou the part of the others to close or they cer tainly would not have yielded the point to one or to two obdurate persons who would not yield to the wishes of the other, and to the sentiment of this entire community. There could not have been any grout real or enthusiasm on tlie subject, when some forty busi ness houses allowed one single concern to dictate a course to them and oom|>el them to yield to Its w islies ou so im liortuut a matter. All the clerks were, therefore, kept hard at work all day long and many of them, we doubt not, went without their dinners ion that festal day Instead or enjoying a good old time Christmas dinner at home iu the joyous re-union of friends and families. Many, indeed a very large majority of the clerks in this place are from the country, and their parents and brothers and sisters are now living ou the old plantation once happy and free from care iu the Mood old days. From the heavy losses we all have suffered they have not es e*jwd, mid tlie young meu have come to town to w ork and to try to support and take care of themselves, ami thus relieve their families from the burt hen. It does seem hard that these young meu should be forced to work all day long through this tmivergai holiday, and tliat they slumld l*'se|>uratod from their families on this of ail the other days of the year. There was one bright exception amongst our merchants. While only one house would not yield to the wish es of the others, and close Its doors, there was one In the place which placed principle above every other consideration and closed while all the othera remained open. Captain P. H. Norton, to his credit be it said, closed Ills doors on Christinas day 1874 and •sain this year. He believed, lie knew it to be right, aud, while he would have been very glad indeed to have had the co-operation of his brethren, would not be turned from doing what I lie felt to Is- right simply L-cntisc they j would not otl join w ith him. His! j course will do him no liann. On the ; contrary he w ill be the gainer yet by j bis Independent nsiw in doing right j regardless of what other* did. We | hope and we believe hi* example will i yet I*followed by others until all will : gladly join in with him and lake a , gisxl holiday and have ti genuine true .and merry Christum..
