The beautiful bright warm spring weather which we have been enjoy ing for a month past was brought to a very sudden and disagreeable termina tion last week. On Friday night a change came and on Saturday morn ing there was plenty of ice. Saturday was a cold, blustering day. Sunday was very cold, and on Suuday night aliout midnight there was a very heavy fall of snow. The ground was covered in a short time. Towards day, however, the snow turned to rain and fine hail, and it all froze upon the trees as it fell, bending their branches down under a heavy coating of Ice. Monday was a very disagreeable, wet, cold and dismal day. The weather remained intensely cold. On Tuesday there was ice all day and the ground was frozen. Tuesday night was the coldest night this winter. On Wednes day the temperature began to rise, and now, after a few days’ experience of midwinter, we are again enjoying the genial sunshine and warmth of spring. Gardens are very seriously damaged and vegetables will be late this year. All the fruit which lias bloomed is de stroyed beyond all question, but we are of the opinion that a considerable proportion lias not yet been in bloom. There were apprehensions that the earlier fields of small grain were in jured, but we have been unable to hear of any that lias been damaged. Taking the Vail. On last .Sunday two young ladies took the vail and entered the Convent of St. Joseph at this place. The cere mony was performed at the Catholic Church, by Father O’Bryan, the Pas tor. These novitiates are not natives of or residents of this place, but come from some other section. We failed to lea in their names, military. There was an effort made, we learn, to re-organize the Lee Guards, during the past week, but without success. Military ardor is not very hot in this section. Recover I ne. Mr. George Dyson, our highly res pected and efficient Ordinary, has beep very siek, for a week or two past, with an attack of plurisy. We are glad to inform his hosts of friends that lie is now much better and there is every prospect of his recovery at an early day. Umbrellas and Walking Canes at Lewis H. Clarke’s, Ho, 0 Whitehall Street, Atlanta, ROMANCE IN COLORED SOCIETY. A r.ISAWAV SIATCH. During the last few years it lias been the fashion in this place for the young people to adopt the Gretna Green mode |of perpetrating matrimony, a very | considerable per cent, of the marriages ! having been runaway matches. This i fashion has become so popular, that j during the past year a number of the ! young ladies and gentleman of this section have adopted that way of doing the tiling when there was no necessity for it,and whentliey could just as well have betui married peaceably and respec tably at homed n the good .old-fashioned way, surrounded by family and friends and amidst general rejoicing, cake and sillabub. Young men ceased to ask tile young ladies' pas and mas or their own pas and mas but just went off with the girls ami got married without telling anybody. Or if tlie pas and mas on all sides consen ted, they found some excuse to go off and get married seeretlv. The darkies, always fond of being in the fashion and bent on being in the front ranks of the fashionable circles, since freedom have adopted this style of matrimony. On last Monday night Mr. Sanders Anderson, who works Mr. Green P. C’ozurt's garden, drives the carriage, cuts wood, blacks boots mid totes water for the store, stole a dusky maiden named Mary Evans, from her mother’s villa in the environs of Freedom town, a populous suburb of .his place, and called on the parson whoexpumls the scriptures for the Methodists of the colored person, sion. Bandy had some excuse for his course, however.betides a desire to yield to the inexorable edict of fashion. He had been paying marked attention to the star of his heart’s choice for about a year and had asked her of her widowed (?) mother. But the mother would not consent. She had brought up her daughter with gre.it care and had not allowed her hands to lie har dened or her complexion spoiled by working in the sun or anywhere else, but had brought her up in the very bight of fashionable idleness and ig norance like all the aristocratic nig gers. The reason given for not allow ing Bandy to have the gal, was lie was too black. After falling to obtain consent, and all other means being ex hausted. he went at night and in the dark when ono nigger i< as black as another and stoic her as easy,as ever lie did a pullet off the roost. T2t«* Concert, The entertaiment this evening at the Female Seminary will not eonsist entirely of Music, but the songs nml instrumental pieceswill bo interspersed with readings and recitations by some of tlie Isst and most accomplished readers of the place, a number of ladies assisting in this feature of tlie enter tainment. Thus, while tlie perform ance will be chiefly musical, it will lie varied and rendered more interest ing and entertaining by soma very sprightly readings. The performances will begin with an opening address by our talented young Representative from this county to the Legislature, lion. F. H. Colley The following is the promgrame: Opening Address—F. H. Tlie first meeting for organiz : ing a Grand Lodge will be held in tlie | Hall of Georgia Lodge, Tuesday, May j "and at 10 o’clock a. in. We know of no secret organization which has met with such success and so favorable a reception everywhere, One reason for this is, wc think, be 'cause there is very little that is secret about it. Just enough to satisfy those wiio are fond of secret societies and not enough to be objectionable to those generally opposed to such societies. All tho objects and tlie method of transacting business Is known or may be kuown by any one who desires in formation. Nothing of any irnpor tain-win a business or moral view Is concealed, and the applicant for mem bership is not carried Mindly into a secret, oath bound society knowing I nothing beforehand, as to its objects or requirements.
