Tiik Legislative Session Drawing to a Close. —The Legislature has now ouly eleven days in which to complete its business. Only a few bills have be come laws out of s#me soveu hundred that have been introduced. The House now holds morniugand eveving sessious but even with these regulations they will be obliged to leave a large amount of business unfinished. We see it stated that tea has been cultivated in Crawford county, lowa, and the product has reached seven hundred pounds per acre. It is stated, that the party trying the experiment, after making experiments in other States, fiuds that the soil and climate of lowa land best suited to the plant, and that the latter is hardy there. If this be true, it would bo interesting to know where it is not hardy. Governor Smith of Georgia, the oth er day, to the people of Atlanta, after expressing his regrets that the Demo crats, under the banner of Greely and Brown, had failed to get control of the national administration, said that nev ertheless, Georgia will conttnu to perform her part in good faith as a member of the Federal Union and that (, we should seud the wi est and most discreet men, to the Federal Legislature.” Futhermorc, while de nouncing dishonest Carpet Baggers, we welcome laborers and. capitalists to the South. This is the right spirit of Southern reconstruction. EXTRAORDINARY result of KINDNESS. t • A servant of tho Rev. Rowland Hill sflklenlj died, and his master preached *his funeral scriuou to a numerous audi ence, in tho course of which ho men tioned the following anecdo to: Many persons present wore acquainted with tho deceased, and have in their power to observe his character and conduct. They can bear witness that I speak tho truth when l assert that for a number of years past ho has proven himself a perfectly sober, honest, industrious and religious man, faithfully performing, as far as lay in his power, tho duties of his station in life, and serving Ggd with constancy aud zeal; and yet this man, this virtuous-and pious man, was once a robber on tho highway. More than thirty years ago he stopped me on the high road and demanded my money. Not at All intimidated, I afgued with him. I asked what could induce him to pursue so iniquitous a courso of life. “I have beau a coaohinan, sir,” said he, "‘‘but am now out of place, and not be ing able to get a character, can gut no employment, and am therefore obliged to resort to this means of gaining a sub sistetuoe.” I desired him to call upon Uie; ho promised He would and kept his word. I talked further with him and offered ta take him into .mv service. He consented; and ever since that period he has served me faithfully, aud not me only, but lie has faithfully serv ed his God, And instead of finishing O his l.fe in a public, ignoirinious man ner, with a depraved and hardened m:nd, as he probably would soon have i done, he has died in peace, rejoicing in hope, and prepared, wo trust, for the society of just men made perfect— 2teu> York Observer. TIIE ALDINE, while issued with all tho regularity, has none of the temporary or timely ! interest characteristic of ordinary periodicals | It is irn elegant miscellany of pure, light, and graceful literature; and a collection of pictures, the rarest specimens of artistic skill, in black and white. Although each succeeding number affords a fresh pleasure to its friends, the real value and beauty of The Aldine will be most ap preciated after it has been bound up at the close of the yosr. Wliilo other publications may claim supasior cheapness, as compared with rivals of a similar class, The Aldine is a unique and original conception—alone a nd unapproached—absolutely without competition in price or character. The pcs SCSS or of a complete volume cannot duplicate the quantity of hue paper and engravings in any other shape, or number of volumes for ten times its cost; and then, there arc the chrumos, besides! ART X> iFh/YIRTJVCEISrT. Notwithstanding the increase in the price of subscription last Fall, when The Aldine assumes its present noble proportions and representative character, the edition uas more than doubled during the past year; proving that the Ameri- public appreciate, and will support a sin cere effort in the cause of Art. Tho publishers, anxious to justify the ready confidence thus demonstrated, have exerted themselves to the utmost to develop and improve the work ; and the plans for the coming year, as unfolded by Ihc •monthly issues, will astonish and delight even the most sanguine friends of The Aldine. The publishers are authorized to announce de signs from many of tho most eminent artists in America. In addition. The Aldine will reproduce ex amples of tho best foreign masters, selected with a view to the highest artistic success, and great est. general interest; avoiding such as have be come familiar, through photographs, or oopies of any kind. The quarterly tinted plates, for 1P73 will re produce four of John S. Davis’ inimitable fhild sketches, appropriate to tho four seasons. These plat os, appearing in tho issues fur January, April, July, aud October, would be alone-worth tho price of a year’s subscription. The popular feature of a copiously illustrated “Christmas” number will be continued. To possess such a valuable epitome of the art world at a cost so trifling, -will command the subscriptions of thousands in every section of tho country; hut. as the usefulness and attrac tions of The Aldine can be enhanced, in propor tion to the numerical increase of its sapporters, the publishers propose to mako.“assurnnco doubly dure,” by tho follow ing unparalleled offer of Premium Chromes for i 8t T3 . Everv su’ieoriber to The Aldine , who pays ill r.d vaneo for tiie year IST3, will receive, without addi tional charge, a pair wf beautifuLoil chromes, after ,T. ,T. Hill, the eminent English painter. Tin- pic tures. entitled “The Village Belle,” and “Crossing the Moor,” arc 11x20 Inches—are printed from 25 different plates, requiring 25 impressions and tints to perfect each picture. The sniue chromes are sold for S3O per puff In the art stores. Afc.it is the determination of its conductors to keep The Aldine out of the reach of competition in every depart ment, the cliromos will Vie found correspondingly ahead of any that can be offered by other periodi cals. Every subscriber will receive a certificate, over, the signature of the publishers, guaranteeing that the chromes delivered shall be equal to tho samples furnished the age lit, or the money wtll.be refunded. The distribution of pictures of this grade, free to the sSitisbriliers- to a five dollar peribdis: !, will mark ttn epoch in the history of A ami,con sidering the unprecedented cheapness of the price for The Aldine itself, tho marvel falls little short of a mirado, even to those best acquainted with the achievements of inventive genius and Improved mechanical appliances. Providence has inflicted upon al most every section of our country, for the last month, tho severest weather that has been known for many years. Tho highways of travel in many sections have been stop ped. Communications between neighbor hoods have been interrupted. People have been compelled to keep clor© at their homos. A State Agent informs us that "the contribution from his State will !■ cut down to a small amount by Uie inclem ent weather, and the shortness of time.” One Agent stated to us in person that there was many who wished to subscribe—that lie had not been aide to see in consequence of the oxtreine bitternss of the weather. When we honestly tell you Unit, will you not rather thank than con demn us for the delay. In addition to the difficulties already referred to, we may properly add that for weeks past the ex citement of canvassing for county offices, some of which are lucrative, have directed attention from this effort to do garateful and patriotic work. These elections are over. These excitements ate rapidly pass ing away. Our people eau now have time for reflection. They will now move freely ; come to the tombs < f their martyrs, stretch ed on their shields in wakeless sleep, and make their offerings for perpetual ‘remem brance.
