D., of St Paul’s Churcb, Augusta, will officiate, morning and afternoon,at the Cburcli, in this place. Morning service will begin at half-past ten o’clock.' f There was to have been a meeting of thcycung men of this town last night for the purpose of organizing a minstrel troupe. We have not lieard what tho result of tlm meeting was, but have no doubt but that tlio troupe was organiz ed without any trouble. Upon inquiry wc learn that the pros pect of organizing a cavalry company in tltH comity, is good. 1.1 jtween forty ami fifty gcntP'iucii have signilijU their intention to join. No doubt the mini her will he in creased to seventy or eighty shortly. There htohe a meet ing on Saturday for the pitrpo-e of or iralriz'iijr. t' Theiih was a fishing party yesterday at the ford on Mclntosh, just below town. Most of the young people at tended. Wo have no idol that any fishing was done for • the finny tribe ut Mclntosh. When called a fishing party, we suppose that the originators had in their minds the passage: “Como ye after me; l will m tke you fishers of men.” t Driuso the past two weeks a great quantity o f rain has fallen in this sec tion. Throughout Richmond, Burke, Warren, Jefferson, Screven, and Eman uel the complaint “too much rain” is generally made. Uotfou is pretty well in the grass, and corn is comparatively sickly. With a week of just such weather as we arc now having, all ill cfTccts of the late unfavorable fort night will be remedied. r Postponement.— On account of the severe illness nf one of the managers, and the anticipated early absence (ro eruiting during the summer months) of several members, the proposed concert for the benefit of the Presbyterian church has been iudeflfinately postpon ed. Wc suppose the organization will be again perfected sometime in the Fall, when a series of entertainments, for this laudable purpose, will be given. f Queer ErKTAPits.—On our first page will be found a number of “queer epi taphs and the reading of them brings to mind ono that is said to be upon a grave-stone in the Augusta cemetery —as follows; "Remember, friend, as you.pass by, As you arc now, so once was I; As I am now, so yon must be— Prepare for death, and follow me.” To this a young man, with poetic turn of mind, replied in pencil, just beneath : "To follow thee I’m not content Until I know which way you went,” r On some plantations the crops are ; very good—on others the coHon is very I grassy and tho corn spindling, from hav ing been plowed when the ground was too wot. Tho crops are certainly not as good as they were this tiino last year, ; however, experienced planters say that ! it is.entirely too soon to form any opin ion ns to what tho yield will be. We sincerely hope that tho crop will be a large one, and that the price of cotton will bo maintained. Without this com bination of fotuno it is impossible to realize the strait that many of our far mers will be reduced to. f [COMMOSHOATKD.] hfr. Editor: —Allow mo to call the attention of tho Grand Jury, recently | in session, to an error in their Present ments, which they made, doubtless in tbc hurry of business. In their notice of “Hoads and Bridges,” they have presented, among others, tho Commis sioners of the 00th and G2d districts, each for tho non performance of duty, and your humble servant’s mine beads tho unfortunate list. Now, m to iny immediate associates, Judge Ward and Dr. Banks, I have nothing to say, as I know nothing of the .sections of roads under their control ; but, in this in stance, acting upon the safe principle of “each man taking care of himself.” I ask what difference does it make whether a Commissioner performs his duty or not, so there is a defaulter in his district? The roads u dpr my spec ial supervison are worked regularly two or three times yearly. Before the recent assemblage of your b >dy. the sections of roads worked by me, wore worked two days by as large a force as could be collected perhaps i l any por tion of the county on the same length of road; and, notwithstanding the last toothing rams, are in good order now. In looking over the names of Jurors, I sec only two or three who likely pass ed over a portion of the roads alluded to; and I cannot understand why they permitted this inditeiminate charge of neglect of duty upon us all. And in view of if, I am at a loss to know when , where and how to work the roads so as not to be considered i:i default ? Thus far I have faithfuly, discharged tho few public duties imposed upon me, aid while l fhtfrft lio praise I deprecate k/T jmt public censure ; and as I do not find any comfort or relief from pain in being shot in a crowd , I propose, for nay own security in future, to avoid such by resigning my position among the Com missioners of Iliads. WESLEY JONES, One of the Commissioners of lloads, fidtli and 621 Districts. Bkawikt.h’s Female RKom.ATon—Wo have often ro id in Hie newsptp?r? of 111 - grand success of medical compounds put up at tho North and elsewhere. Many of those me Heines have had their day, no 1 wo hear no more of them. Their proprietors h i ve ill ide fortunes, not so much from the curative powers and virtues of their mixtures, ns from the no onety given them by advert! in", hy which people wore made to behove uli the good that was said of them A preparation is now before the public, which is becoming very popular, and is known as BrallicU’s Female ft emulator, put. up by L. It. Braltfleld. of Atlanta, (la., at #1.50 per bottle. Such is its curative virtues that it has gained wide-spread populari ty all over the country whore it has been made known, and it is being introduced everywhere Wo are informed that immense quantities of this medieino are being sold in all sections of the South and Southwest, especially in the cit3 T of New Orleans and in Texas. This much we my in justice to its proprietor, who is a gentleman of integrity, and who would not engage in tho manufacture and sale of a humbug.— Ladfra.nf'e RrporteV. B. F. A West Point letter to the New York Sun says: Cadet S*ith, the colored cadet, is still here, with every prospect of re maining throughout the entire course. He has not failed as yet in any branch of study, and promises to pass a very good examination. His company is not sought after by any of his classmates, but ho docs not seem to mind that.—* At the hotel to-day I heard him dis cussed by a bevy of young ladies, They seemed to be suffering terribly, One of them had boon informed by one of her cadet friends that somo one had said that they had heard that Oadat Smith had said that if ono of his young colored lady friends should arrive in | season ho intended to attend the cadet hops. “Oh, my,” exclaimed one. “Oh, dear,” ejaculated her friend. “Good gracious, did you ever ?” responded a third. “Well,” said the young lady who gave them the news, “I declare I shan't dance in that hop room. Posi tively I won't.” And then a conversa tion ensued about the poor cadet, “Othello,” whioh for the display of in tellect, sound sense and choice lau ! gunge was something remarkable. “LADIES MEMORIAL ASSO CIATION.” At a meeting of .1 lie "Ladies Memorial As sociation” of Burke county, held April 28lh, 1873, it was resolve! to ask the ladies of the county to unite ill the effort, by form ing in -tl;ir respective localities co-opera tive societies.
