M a SONIC Ai>intKss.—-Thc address de livered by the Rev. Mr. Cnoss, before Screven Lodge, on the 24rh nit.—St. John’s day,—has been rcooivcd for pub lication. It will appear in our next issue. ITomiciuk. — A difficulty occurred between two negroes, March Wilson and James Klmore Garrow, on Monday night last, at the plantation of Dr. J. ,1. Palmer, in -which the former lost his life. —• MR . Thk Fiiist Melon.— For the first wa'crmclon of the season we are in debted lo Mr. Jamw Olaxtun. Our friends having more of this kind of truck than they ‘‘know wliut to do with,” will find this a convenient place to “drap a few of their fine ones.” As will be seen by an item in our Georgia News column, Oapt. John Mili.kihh?, of Atlanta, has oallyd u meeting of the Alumni of the old State Millitary College. This meeting will be held in the city of Atlanta ou the 1-t of September next. There arc sever: 1 graduates of that Institute in this county, and we hope, they will re spond to the call, both for the profit and pleasure • a re-union will afford them. Imvuovkd Cotton I’laxtbk.--The fol lowing indoooincut ot the improved cot* fort planter, invented and lately pa tout- j cd by JV Geo. of our town, ' J . . • 1 is-- from tho Scientific -lineman : This invention' consists in the im- j provoment of cotton planters. Behind the plows are the guano hoppers, sup- j ported 0:1 iron rods or bars’ or other supports, adjustable toward or from the frame. Vertical slides are arranged in the hoppers wit t pockets tpfiilwita tho puuno us they rise up in the hopper, and carry it down to discharge below. Js'aid slides arc pushed down by tnppcis ton the seed-dropping wheels. *‘**l w'y are forced up by a spring, when the tappets escape from prejections. Tho pockets are varied as to capacity by ad* just able blocks, held by binding screws so they can be readily loosened, shifted, and fastened again. The relative ar rangement of dm guano droppers and the seed droppers is siicli th it the seed and the guano will be dropped together. It will bo seen tliat a great, economy of labor will be effected by*the use of this machine, which combines eight separate and special machines in one, F' quires only otic horso or mule and one attend ant, and rusltL >: the horse nor the at tendant has to walk along the ridges and tramp the earth down, as wheu seperata machines are used. H lie prin cipal improvement in the device eon- Fists iu the vortical pocket slide, arrang ed to reciprocate up and down iu the guano dropper. This machine is intended to open, plant, and cover two rows, and can be easily adopted to any width of rows.— It can be used cither as a cotton planter or guano distributor separately, or both combined. Being supported on a cen tre truch wheel that runs between the beds , it is estimated that the draft will be no greater than other planters for one roic, running as they do on top of cotton beds. Both the. openers and coverers arc so arranged as to be com pletely under the coutrol of thy hand, and can he regulated while the planter is iu motion, thus economising time. No rubbing of scod will be necessary; and probably one of the best features of the planter lies in this, in addition to its simplicity, lightness, and labor-sav ing capacity. The body of the planter being an open frame, the attendant can always sec the seed in the furrows be fore they are covered up. We fed proud that this most valuable farmers' help was originated in our very midst; and hope the Doctor will he fully re warded tor the time, ingenuity, and ex pense a'tend ant upon the perfection of his invention, Burke feheriil fettles.
