New Cotton. —Messrs. Campbell dc Jones
received live bales of new cotton this morning.
Cillers. —From bills we learn that a monster
circus is coming to Macon some time in Sep
tember next. The little hoys wiUi£}\ begin
to rake up their dimes.
Kkti’UNED. —F. J. Champion, f the house

from his trip northward. He reports himself
as having enjoyed a most pleasant and agreea

Wm. Anderson proves to be one of the
most scientific swindlers of the age. It is
stated that lie figured for a long time under
the name of Cohen.
’Rah for Macon.—Our beautiful little sister
city Griffiu is to be lighted up with gas made
from one of the machines of the Macon Porta
ble Gas Company. We know what this gas is,
and can safely promise Gridin a cheap, reliable
and brilliant light.
Sunstroke. —We understand that Mr. Petei
hoyless, one of the workmen employed at the
Park, was prostrated this morning l>y sun
stroke. By the prompt attention of Mr. Tom
Freeman, he got over it. The sun has been so
very hot to-day, it is a wonder that there are
not more than one case.
Runaway.—Our young friend Montfort, of
that, enterprising grocery firm, Callaway, Small
& Montfort, happened to an accident yesterday
a ftemoon. When out riding his horse took
fright und smashed Mr. Montfort’s beautiful
buggy [all to smithereens. Luckily Mr. M.
escaped unhurt.
To-Mobuow.—Our Saturday’s issue gave gen
eral satisfaction to all of our patrons, as they
contain a number of extracts from nearly all
the leading religious journals, besides a com
plete epitome of all the current news through
out the State. To-morrow we will have au
excellent article on the church and delinquent
members, Wc shall give our readers a good
paper, and ask their thorough perusal.
The Weather.—The following is the re

Public Debate. —Some two months ago,
actuated by a desire for intellectual as well as
social and moral improvement, the young men
of Windsor Hill and vicinity organized a De
bating Club and gave it the name of that great
General, Robert E. Lee. The society bus met
with such success both in numbers and speak
ing talent, that the members design having a
public debate at the Baptist Mission Chapel,
on Monday night next, beginning at 8 o’clock,
to which the public, especially the ladies, arc
particularly invited. The question to be de
bated is, “Is the Pen mightier than the
8word?” The Chapel has been kindly ten
dered to the Club by the trustees, who are
hereby publicly thanked for the favor. Let
every body attend, as the speaking will be
good. Wc shall endeavor to be present and
will give ft report of the result.
Rather Rough.—Some beautiful and ac
complished daughter of Macon has been in the
habit of late of supplying u nice little duck of
a fellow of our acquaintance with a boquet
composed of the choicest and freshest flowers
that could be culled. The other morning he
received one, and was asked to sell it for a dol
lar by a young friend, which at first lie refused,
but finally consented. No. 1 took the money,
informed the fair boquet-sendcr of the transae
tion, then treated her to ice-cream with the
iihmtical dollar he had sold the flowers for.
No. 2 thought he had a good joke on No. 1,
hut he was completely sold, and will buy no
more flowers—not sit that price.

until it got Dareus and Melinda entangled in
*uch a complicated web of disorderly conduct
that nothing short of the volubility of that

of thought, and in a manner truly wonderful.
Showers of hoquets did not greet her charm

No two families ever lived together in the

October First. —About this time or a little
later, those people who are so unfortunate, or
fortunate, as not to be the owners of their
own homes and firesides are beginning to look
around for houses. .Vjbout this time landlords
and landladys are. beginning to rub their
hands in prospects of big rents, and about
this time something should be said con
cerning landlord and tenant. The exhorb
itnnt rents have forced a great many people to
move out upon the suburbs of the town,
upon Windsor and Troup Hill, but they
inconvenience themselves to a great extent, as
they have a long, rough walk morning ami
night*. -But they are willing, und we don’t
blame them, to wajk double the distamAnthcr

scrupulous landlords seem to have a to

some leaky house that has n<it been repaired
since the day it was btilt. Of course there are
some, and we believe the majority of them
are good men, who possess a soul as other
people, but we speak of those that are known
to be Shylocks of the first water.
Let the cry be “down with high rents.”
Art Thou Gone, Little Moughon ?
For the Macon Enterprise. |
Alas it is so! The tendcrest ties are rudely
broken, and affections run back upon the
heart, tilling it with utterances of grief. The
lovely little child will no more kindle the
pleasures of joy. Its artless innocence will
live in the memory of the heart’s affection. All
now rest in the sleep of death. Its time was a
short and Ileeting hour. It came and went as
comes and goes the flagrant flower, leaving its
beauty and fragrance on the mind and senses
as mementos of its charm and sweetness. As
the bud of father and mother, it was watched
with anxiety and parted with in the deep throes
of grief. Its features, its form, its little prat
tle, its sweet smile, and cunning little acts,
will rapidly pass before the mind and be laid
away in the inner chambers of the heart. It is
now a child of bliss. Let father and mother
linger at its green grave. I)o not tell them to
go away, for the unity of the past and present
may shape their future for eternal happiness.
There is often pleasure and profit, as well as
pain in sorrow*. A. 11. W.
