LIBERALISM.
Fusion in New York.
The Platform Adopted.
I. Tlmt wo Imi 1 with enthusiasm the
uprising of the pooplo in favor of reform
in public affairs, as evidenced in the un
ion of the patriotic citizens of all parties
tot lirow off tin; weight of misgovernraent
ami restoro the Jeffersonian standard of
administration.
11. That the condition of the country is
such as to demand this sacrilice of past
prejudices ; the tone of administration has
been lowered, the civil service hat. grown
corrupt, the military power is too readily
resorted to, the bureaus at Washington
huvo become the centres of favoritism and
Jobbery, and the Southern States under a
system of military repression and dicta
lion have been subjected to robbery and
waste, which have already imposed upon
them nearly four hundred millions of
debt, oppressing industry and hindering
Immigration, and, by destroying this cred
it, exposing the country to the shame and
contagion of repudiation
111 That the federal administration, in
addition to its accumulated corruption, its
nepotism and extravagance, its Indiffer
ence to constitutional obligation, and iis
subjection of the civil authority to ai'Wl
tiary surveillance and dictation, stands
before lint country convicted of Inthlelity
to its pledge to instore peace to the di*
triu-ted Unites , it is now the cliiel otetn
ele to a restoration of a friendly spirit la
tween sections and classes of the Union,
and the moral, social and industrial, as
well as the political Interests of the coun
try demand its removal from power.
IV. That the Republicans of this Hlalu
who secured power by preference of sym
pathy with reform deserve the severest
judgment of the people for llieir falsity
to llieir pledges. The record of the last
session shows Unit they e.oiidenfnc and alike
Ilie offence of a senator who sold Ids vole
and of the senator who purchased it, pass
ed over without censure the extortions of
llieir clerk, violated llieir oaths by nmU
ing u false and unjust apportionment of
congressional districts, encouraged per
sonal and local legislation, obeyed without
resistance the dictation of great moneyed
corporations, refused to enact reforms es
sential to the general good, and laid them
selves open to the grossest charges of ve
nality and corruption.
V. That n pure Judiciary is the essential
foundation of a free State. We congratu
late the people upon what has been done
to purify our existing system, and we de
mand that the work of reform sliull go on
without regard to party until our judiciary
shall stand acknowledged by the world
free and Independent.
VI. That while we disclaim any right to
interfere with the institutions of our sister
States, we deem it proper to say that it is
the duly of the South to educate and ele
vate their colored citizens, so tlmt they
may intelligently exercise the right of sul
frage, and that we regard all attempts to
combine and array this body of electors
against the population as in the highest
degree Impolitic and equally injurious to
both classes of citizens of the United Slater.
VII. That the canals of New York are
the property of the people of the State, and
that wo repsl all propositions to subject
them to the manipulations and control of
O - .—iiniAii t This tMllic.V
which the people should enforce iu llieir
management is, economy in expenditures,
and the lowest tolls adequate to meet their
annual obligations, with a view to their
speedy ami final exemption from debt, and
free navigation to all comers.
VIII. That the equality of all citizens,
of whatever creed or race, Is one of the
cardinal principles of Democracy, and is
an essential characteristic of our republi
can system. We invite all citizens who
recognize this principle to unite and defeat
the candidate nominated by our political
opponents for Vico President, who is
proved to ho the sworn advocate and agent
ot a bigoted and proscriptive political or
ganization.
IX. That the general administration of
tlie Hon. John T. Hoffman, as governor,
meets I lie approbation of this convention.
X. That the declaration of principles
made at Cincinnati, and proclaimed again
at Baltimore, presents a platform upon
which all luay stand. Carried Into effect,
it will prevent the centralization of power,
and restore and perpetuate home govern
ment; it will purify the civil service; it
will rediico the burdens of the people ; it
will make easy the task of repairing the
injuries and wrongs created by civil war
ami revelation, and it will restore fraternal
feeling among the people of the Htales
XI That the nominations of Horace
Greeley and B. Gratz Brown for President
and Vice President receive our hearty and
unanimous approval, made as they were
in conformity with the Democratic usage,
by the representatives of the party duly
chosen, they are commended to tlie sup
port of all Democrats of strict parly obli
gation. and we accept this obligation with
nlaerlty and enthusiasm, because we
recognize in these candidates moil of high
personal Character, of long public service
and training, and of elevated and patriotic
purposes, who will devote their official
•.run not to selfish ends and the perpetua
tion of their own power, but lathe rrstora
tiou ot peace aud piosperlly among the
people amt the vindication of the Ameri
can name and of republican Institutions
I lining bout tlie world.
The President on his Knees.
The Herald reporter from the Sea Clitf
Camp Meeting gives the following item
••The day that Dr. Newman left Long
Itranch for the Clitf the Presldeut had
liecn twice on his knees iu prayer with
the Doctor ; and though Gcnetal Grant la
not yet a professional Christian, ho is an
anxious seeker after salvation.

PRINTING
It lias been the custom heretofore, and will probably remain so to a
great extent, for our merchants and business men generally to send
North to have their printing done, simply because it can be done there
at a little lower figure than here. If our people would discontinue
patronizing such men, they would soon see the policy, if not the jus
tice, in having their work done at home. Calicos are not manufactured
iu the South, and hence the merchant must send where it is made, but
here we have printing offices all around us, doing work at a very small
advance on northern prices, and still the work is sent away. We hope
the time is not for distant when our merchants will awake to their in
terests and patronize home institutions. It is a wrong practice and
should be condemned.
