—pi Munmy.—Wo want all our readers to go
and hear the Lecture of Dr. Munscy tonight,
it will be an intellectual feast.
Nurse —A nurse that can bring good rec
ommendations, cau find a good home at the
Stubblefield House. See advertisement.

To Kent.—Judge K. C. Grannlss advertises
his house to rent in this issue.
Stock, ,'< nds, etc. —Messrs. 1 C. Plant &
Son advertises a lot o' stock, bonds, etc., in
this evening’s issue.
Brick House For Rent.—Mr. Valentine
Kaiin lias a brick house for rent
Tua Charter Oak still holds it own, and
its live agents lose no opportunity to let that
fact he known.
Clover.—Messrs. Hunt, Rankin and Lamar
.proclaim to the world that they have on hand
clover seed of the crop of 1872.
Attention, Capitalists.—F. L. Groce, Esq.
offers for sale his interest in the six valuable
brick stores fronting on Poplar street and
composing part of Hollingsworth Block, in
this city. The attention of capitalists is.called
to his card in to-day’s issue.
The pulpit of the Presbyterian Church will
lie occupied on next Sunday by the Rev. W. S.
Plumer of Columbia, South Carolina, an emi
nent and gifted divine.
School op Reform.— John Anderson my
Joe got out of meat and broke open a house,
for whicli he pays $lO and costs.
Dave Titus got on a little spree which cost
him $5 and costs.
Sleeping Cars. —If tlic authorities of the
Southwestern Railroad would put sleeping cars
on their l oad they would receive more patron
age. Passengers from Eufaula take the Gulf
Road route going North, where sleeping cars
are running. We have heard several com
plaints, and thus give our clever authorities a
hint.
Tiib Meeting Last Night. —A large crowd
assembled at the City Ilall last night to hear
speeches from Col. C. T. Goode and General
Henry L. Banning. The meeting was presided
over by Hon. Washington Poe,
The addresses were excellent and well de
livered, and our Democracy considerably
strengthened, Such appeals as those made last
night are not without good fruit.
Huge Corn Stalk.— We received to-day a
com stalk measuring twelve feet in length
which was grown by Mr. Robert Lundy, in
Jones county; it lias never tasecled and never
bore corn. It was of the Greeley anti-free trade
variety, grew on bottom land and was fertilized
with a double-barrclld hoc and a bottle of
hartshorn. The only reason that we can con
jecture for its not bearing corn is, that it is too
well grown for its (y)ears.
To Atlanta. —By the Ist of October, Messrs.
Guilford, Wood & Cos. will open a branch
store at 08 Whitehall street. These gentle
men are known in every city in the State, as
being reliable and worthy, and Atlanta has just
cause to be proud of the valuable accession to
its mercantile community, and we heartily
congratulate her, and only hope she will be
stow upon the new house the patronage it so
well deserves.
By importing their small goods direct from
Germany, they are enabled to sell to dealers
goods at the same prices that are charged in
New York. Besides being sole agents for the
State for several of the very best make of pi
anos and organs, they sell the beautiful Flor
ence sewing machine, together with the better
class of sheet music.
Mr. Charles C. Guilford, of the above firm,
will take charge of the Atlanta branch store,
and we commend him to the people of Atlanta
as being gentlemanly, affable and accommo
dating, and brimful of energy and industry.
Commotion at Home.—A few minutes ago,
we received the following note from onr cook:

over Its merits. In behalf of Mrs. Local, we

Sept, 28-30-ocl,
Tun Southern Musical Journal doses its
first volume with tills month, and its publish
ers have this to say to its readers :
“ In establishing the Journal, it was for many
reasons found impracticable to have the typo
graphical work executed In Savannah, and we
were therefore obliged, after preparing the
matter here, to scud it North to be printed;
which has beeu attended with muaii extra labor
and no little expense, and lias caused many vex
ations, delays and provoking errors. Tills lias
been anything but satisfactory to us, and we are
pleased to bo able to announce tlmt all obsta
cle heretofore In tlic way of making the Jour
nal as we intended it should be, (wholly a
Southern enterprise) liavo been overcome, and
in future it will be entirely gotten up in Savan
nah, and In a style, which will reflect credit
upon our home printers.
Thu October number of the Journal will ap
pear hi a “new dross,” new typound handsome
cover, end with many changes for the better,
of which we will leave our readers to Judge.
It is our aim to publish not only the hand
somest, but the best Musical Magazine, and we
can promise In our next volume a livelier and
far more interesting table of contents than we
have heretofore been able to present.
With thanks for the generous support with
which we have thus fur been favored, we ask
our friends to try us one more year, and assure
them they will be amply repaid ill so doing.

The Great Dry Goods House op S.
Wa.yei.baum and Brother.—Tins mammoth
Dry Goods House is truly one of the greatest
in all the Southern country. We donbt if
there are many which are more extensive on
the North American continent outside of New
York and Philadelphia, and even in those
cities there are not many carrying heavier
stocks or doing a larger trade.
Occupying the centre of Triangular Block —
running through from Second street to Cot
ton Avenue, and from cellar to roof, there arc
five grand divisions to tlic establishment.
'1 he cellars or ground rooms are used for
packing and unpacking goods for all depart
ments and for the storage or Domestics.
Tlic right hand floor above is the chief whole
sale department, and here we find a ship load
of Prints, Domestics, Alpaccas of all colors,
Janes, Bleaehlngs, Shirtings, Stripes, Checks,
Ginghams, Fancy Dress Goods, Red and White
Flannel*!* Opera Flannels, Tickings, Brown
Goods, Corsets, Linseys, Poplins and so on,
running through the entire catalogue.
On the left is the general Retail Room. And
a busy scene it always presents, morning
noon and night. It would be much easier to
tell wbat is not in there than what is. It con
tains among, other things the largest stock of
silks in Georgia—some of them running as
high as SIOO per pattern. Our ladies cau lind
anything there from an inch of ribbon to a
cashmere shawl.
The two floors above are set apart for ready
made clothing, boots, shoes, lints, shawls,
hosiery, gloves, linens, shirts, balmoral skirts,
cloaks, blankets, quilts and notions ad infini
tum.
But it is useless to call every article by name.
It would take up half the space in our paper.
Dealers must go and see for themselves. A
superficial glance makes one think there is
enough ou hand to supply the whole trade of
Macon for months to come—and yet so great
is the trade of the house, it is necessary to
send off new orders for fresh supplies almost
every day in the week. Scarcely a steamer
leaves New York for Savannah without having
consignments for “S. W. & 8., Macon.”
The senior requests us to make the positive
statement ns a fact that they sell at New York
prices.
Wc found the house this morning full of
country merchants and citizens, and every
clerk just as busy as he could be. And no
wonder, for such a stock as that will attract
people to it the dullest day in the week, and
at this Beaton no one wishing to purchase will
go by it.
A large capital, industry, the most scrupu
lous honor, and a long series of years devoted
to the business, has placed this house in the
front rank of Dry Goods Dealers in Georgia. It
is known fur and wide as such and will contin
ue to he for a long time in the future.
Lon.—This fair, fat and forty chap continues
to cut hair in the most approved style. He
shaves as graceful as ever, and keeps his shop
in as good order as possible. *

of the finest cabbages in tlic Macon market.

Revenue Exemption.
Washington, Sept. 28.—The President
and family arrived here last night and it
is formally announced that there will be no
cabinet meeting for several weeks, The
reason for this is manifest in absence on
electionery tours of all but two of the cab
inet officers and those two are to go next
week on some partizan mission.
Revenue Bureau has decided that cer
tificates of naturalization issued by the Uni-

General Remarks.—The price of cotton
given to us tills morning Is 16% cents for the
boat grades while there is no actual advan
ces, there Is a bettor demand,at tills figure than
has been for several days past it is gratifying to
know that the downward tendency has been
arrested, for it is useless it deny the fact that
the crop will fall far short of the expectations a
month or so a go. In this connection we may
mention that we met Col. L. H. Jordan this
morning, the largest planter in Georgia. He
stated a fact that he.would not make within 00
per cent, of wheat he expected *ftt an earlier
period in the season.
We also have received a letter dated Oxford,
Mississippi, Sept. 20th, which briefly says :
“Our cotton crop is cut off one half by dry
weather und worms. The entire crop opened
and will be gathered by the Ist of November.”
This letter was signed by B. E. Hurt, a gen
tlemen not at all interested in speculations in
the staple.
We have no change to report in the provis
ion trade. Clear ribbed sides are firm at 18
cents. Dispatches this morning from the West
quote tlic hog product firm with an upward
tendency. It is true this figure of 13 cents
may be shared in Macon with a party who
wishes to realize, but still this a fair quotation.

TIIE I’ItKIVIIIIiH WEEKLY.
IT is universally conceded that, advertising is
a necessity to success in business; it is also
conceded, by tlic shrewdest business men, tlmt
newspapers are the best medium for reaching
all parties whose trade is desired.
THE MONROE ADVERTISER
reaches more of the people trading with Ma
con than any other journal published In the
country; It is, therefore, the brut medium of
communication with the planting interests.
We will be happy ut any time to furnish refer
ences to leading merchants here und elsewhere,
who will testify to tho fact that they have re
ceived orders for goods from parties who read
their cards in The AdvcrtUar. in fact, many
who have availed themselves of its columns,
candidly say that its value exceeds that of all
other journals in which they are represented.
The AdvertUcr has the freshness of youth and
the ripeness of age, and is therefore deservedly
successful.
CHARACTER OF ADVERTISEMENTS.
No advertisements are admitted which are
not believed to he above question and of real
value, and from parties so unquestionably re
