Business —Business is good to day. The
street* present a lively appearance.
Hain.—A slight shower of ruin fell to nay.
We are lmvino first rate chill weather.
PehsoMai.. —George W. Bylngton, Esq .mine
host of Byington'a Hotel, Griffin, was in
town to-day, looking as usual—plump and
clever.
Ci.eamso Ur. —We notice workmen engaged
in trimming the grass at the Park. Mayor
Hull' seems determined to keep it in good
order.
A I’hesent. —We learn from the Albany
News that Kev. Win. McKay, of our city, has
presented the Presbyterian church at Albany
with line pulpit lamps.
Chowder Out. —Many local articles are
crowded out to-day owing to the length of the
articles from the Press on the recent election.
Signs.— Messrs. Guilford, Wood &Cos., have
erected a beautiful sign over the pavement at
their store.
Messrs. Windham & Cos., the popular
knights of the brush, put up n handsome sign
at their shop to-day.
Musical Albums.—Our young friends, Pen
dleton & Ross, have a novelty in the way of a
musical album. It resembles a large photo
giaphlc album, holding several pictures, while
one-lialf of the book is a tiny music box,
throwing out the sweetest music.
Couldn’t See It.—Two little boys in East
Macon were discussing the recent election row.
One said lie much rather a negro would come
at him with a pistol than a knife, as he dUlixcd
being cut. The other, a bright little fellow
responded. “Well I’d rather they’d come at
me with a knife ’cause I might out run the
knife, but I know I couldn’t out run the pis
tol.”
Mavok’s Couht. —Considering that it was
Monday morning, a very small audience greet
ed tlie Mayor this morning. Very few eases
were docketed but they were quickly attended
to, and the levee was of short duration.
Louisa Green was verdant enough to imagine
herself foot loose and fancy free, and ripped
around at a considerable rate. A cop being
close by, managed to slip into liis hands, who
brought her lovely form before Ills Honor.
Not liking the looks of things, that oflieial
fined the lady $5 and costs, and hade her set
down.
A drunk and disorderly paid $5 and cost.
Hen Tanner and Henry Davis acted in a way
that caused a cop to drop in on them and spoil
their fun. His Honor ordered *5 and costs
each to be taken from them, and the court ad
journed.
Mass Meeting.—The Radicals will have a
mass meeting to-night. The following is a
copy of the poster:
Mass Meeting.—The colored people are
invited to assemble in front of the City Ilall,
on the evening of the 7th.
I am blamed by many for advising my peo
ple to go to the polls without arms on election
day, and .thus subjecting them to be shot down
without any means of resistance or self de
fence. I wish to explain my reasons for giv
ing the advice I did. J. F. Long.

Ullmann.—The circus having gone away,
tlie people seem to think that Ullmann’s at
tiie Isaacs’ House Saloon is the most attractive
resort in the city. His Cincinnati beer, Rhine
wine, Seltzer water, good lunches, and above
all, those oysters on tlie half shell are the prin
cipal attractions. It.
Oysters.— Carlos will have a large quantity
of oysters on hand to-morrow. Steam opened
85 cts per quart. Hand opened 50 cts. North
ern apples, cabbages canned fruits, and every
thing else in the fancy grocery line. It

Bright days are the best for babies, as they
have to he taken like shooting birds on tlie
wing.

Answer to Correspondent!*.
"Play Goer,” takes it for granted that
we "know nothing about theatrical mat
ters,” but yentures to propound to us tbc
following question to settle a heated dis
pute :
“When and where did women first tako
part in theatrical English plays?”
Answer : We believe that the first ap
pearance of an actress on the English
stage took place in 1660, on the Bth of
December, in a London Theatre, in Vere
Street. The part was that of Desdemona.
The name of the “brave lady,” does not
appear. The prologue of the play on
that occasion is preserved by Mr. Malone.
We remember a few lines, as follows ■
‘1 is possible a virtuous woman may
Abhor all sorts of looseness, and yet play;
Play on the stage—where all eyes are upon her.
fcliall we count that a crime France counts a a
honor?
In other Kingdoms husbands safclv trust ’em;
The difference lies only in the custom.”
And this ;
“But to the point: —iu this reforming age *
We have intents to civilize the stage
We shall purge everything that is unclean,
Lascivious, scurrilous, impious or obscene ;
And when we've put ail things in this fair way,
Barebonea himself may come to see a play.”
We beg to refer our correspondent (a
citizen of Savannah, by the way) to Ma
lone's exhaustive and authoritative work,
for all he may desire jto know.

TIIE riClHlini WEEKLY.
IT is universally conceded that advertising is
a necessity to success in business; it is also
conceded, by tlie shrewdest business men, tliut
newspapers are the best medium for reaching
all parties whose trade is desired.
TIIE MONROE ADVERTISER
reaches more of tlie people trading witii Ma
con than any other journal published in tlie
country; it is, therefore, the best medium of
communication with tlie planting interests.
We will be happy at any lime to furnish refer
ences to leading merchants here and elsewhere,
who will testify to tlie fact that they have re
ceived orders for goods from parties who read
tlieir cards in The Advertiser. In fact, many
who have availed themselves of its columns,
candidly say that Its value exceeds that of all
other journals in which they are represented.
The Advertiser has tlie freshness of youth and
the ripeness of age, arid is therefore deservedly
successful.
CHARACTER OK ADVERTISEMENTS.
No advertisements are admitted which are
not believed to be above question and of real
value, and from parties so unquestionably re
liable that the readers of The Advertiser will lie
safe in ordering them from any distance. To
