Let ui Have Peace.
A riot occurred in Cincinnati on the I

(iroclcy club* The following report we
clip from the Enquirer
now TUK RIOT COMMBHCRD.
The Greeley Clubs of the Fourth and
Fifth Ward* hud decided to turn out In
procession lust evening witli their torches
and transparencies. They had assembled
iu the upper end of the Fourth Ward,
and marching down Whitaker street, up
High and Hamu streets, hud come out on
Fifth, passing up to llroadway, where
they halted At the corner of Sixth
and llroadway the Sixth Ward and
other negroes were holding a political
meeting, ut which Colonel llnrlith and
Wn. Alexander were the speakers, while
Allen Temple, their church which stands
on the corner, was crowded by a throng
of men and women who were holding a
fair there. On the street corner and ex
tending down llroadway for a square,
there was guthered a crowd of four or five
hundred men and liulf grown hoys, while
in the church there were perhaps half as
inauy more. The procession came tip
Fifth street with its hand of music playing
amt the men iu it hurrahing for Omuley.
Their march was orderly, and, aside from
this, there was neither noise nor confusion
The olllccrs of the procession did not
know of the meeting being in progress,
and when they learned of it they ordered
a halt, intending to reverse the order of
march and go down limudwny, Instead of
up. While this halt, took place und the
men were resting on liroudway and Fifth
a tremendous, brutish looking negro,
■mined J ustill Clarke, who wore a navy ie
volver in a belt, stepped to lire edge of the
sidewalk and. druwiug Ids revolver

at the procession. This scented to he the
signal for a general attack, for he lord no
sooner tired than he set off on a run to the
stand where Alexander was speaking A
crowd of his associates followed, ami upon
their coming up some two hundred of the
ttteu gathered around the stand and simul

muskets, which, already loaded and witli
bayonets fixed, had been stacked away
ready for the emergency. < lathering them
up they sallied out into the street, und
nlrout one hundred of them formed into
line, crossing llroadway, on Sixth street.
Fifteen or twenty more went up Into the
church and took their stations at the win
dows, looking down on the street. Still
otliers got Into the second stories mid upon
llie roots of neighboring buildings. There
appeared to lie order in all their move
ments, and a commander to direct them.
The line had liecn formed crossing Broad
way, (be various men who had been as
signed to the window a and roof* had taken
their places, when a voloc was distinctly
heard to give the order, “ Fire," Instant

A HATTI.K OK MUSKJCTUY.
From the line crossing the street, from
lliu windows of the church and from the
window* and roof* of the houses, lit sound
it was something like a skirmish titlark,
such as we were wont to hear in war
times. Two or Hirer.men in the proces
sion were seen to drop, while the rest
turned about aud hurried down the street
Major Travis appeared now at the head of
the men who had formed the line nernss
the street, and pursued the rctrouting pro
cession A man recognizing him said
"Travi*; bring your men back. They
have done nothing to you.”
Travi* answered, “No, b—G, I’ll do no
such thing." aud passed on with them.
Someone at this Juncture turned on a
tire alarm, aud the engines cants thunder
ing down to tlio acute. They were re
called almost immediately, however, ami
a riot alarm turned on instead. This
brought some fifty or sixty police olllccrs
to the ground, and they, after a good deal
of clubbing, dreve the negroes linck to
their quarters, anil kept the crowd of
whites, who had by this time gathered
around, from going near. Their arrival
was timely, as a moment later there would
have been more blood shod.
The procession of (lively men, which
was totally unarmed, hud hurried down
to Fourth street In disorder. Those from
the Fifth wanl lisd put out Ihelr torches,
and were seen straggling along the street
iu groups of twos and threes The Fourth
ward boy*, however, pm a bolder face on
the matter, and, orgnui/.iug again, marched
up Fourth street
now Tint nktiuoks talked.
An Kuquirer reporter was on the scene
almost immediately. Without difficulty
he passed through the cordon of ofUcers,
and was iu the midst of the rimers. As
he passed along the streets liis miis were
greeted witli the remarks. "Where are the
white men *" "Show 11s the d—u sous of
b—• ?" One young fellow was heard to
say, "I've faced three thousand men in
the army aud I ain't afraid of any Gree
ley men.” Bob Harlan and Wlll. Alev
under were must profuse iu their explaun
tions of how the trouble came about aud
deploring It* occurrence, but the major
ity seemed to have no regret fbr the part
they hail taken In it
Later in the evening u burly negro was
parading up aud down Vince street with
a revolver in bis belt swearing that he
could "whip any white wan iu Cincin
nati. and he wasn't afhrid to meet him.”
He was jiermitted to continue his protne
nadc undisturbed by tire police.

PRINTING
It Jiao Irh-ii the custom heretofore, nnd will probably remain so to a
great extent, for our merchants and business men generally to send
North to have their printing done, simply because it can be done there
at a little lower figure than here. If our people would discontinue
patronizing such men, they would soon see the policy, if not the jus
tice, in having their work done at home. Calicos are not manufactured
in the South, and hence the merchant must send where it is made, but
here we have printing offices all around us, doing work at a very small
advance on northern prices, and still the work is sent away. We hope
the time is not for distant when our merchants will awake to their in
terests and patronize home institutions. It is a wrong practice and
should be condemned.
