Tub Imvbovbhents. —'The building* ou Cher
ry street aae rapidly going up, and that part of
the street will soon present a handsome appear
aure. The new City Bank is nearly done. The
workman are still diggiug away for the Syna
gogue.
Josh Bh-LIMGs.— Josh has issued his 'Tann
ers' Alminax for 1873,” and it is as full of gen
uine humor and hearty laughs as could he
crowded into thirty-two pages. Messrs. Brown
,fc Cos. have it for saie,
M akried. —Our friend,Mr. Enw.uw V, 'li.ee,
was married lust Sunday night, to Miss Hh ka
Ickbnheimeu. We congratulate our hand
some friend and wish him a rosy pathway as
free of the troublesome thorns as possible. Mr.
Steinhelraer, of Atlanta, was the minister.
w ♦ ——
C nami Bai.l, —Wo acknowledge the cour
tesy of an invitation to a grand ball to be given
at the Kimball House, Atlanta, on the 10th.
Among the floor-managers we notice teveral
prominent names; for instance, Hon. Horace
Ureeley and Gen. U. S. Grant. Mr. Nichols
will please accept our thanks.
- ■
A Heavy Fkost. —We had the first real frost
of the season last night, in low, damp places,
and upon railroad iron, etc., was very white.
We understand vegetation was killed in every
direction by it. It put an end to any further
production of cotton, at least in this immedi
ate vicinity. Had not the gronnd been very
dry from a three or four weeks drought it
would had been much more severe.
Bim, Postershit\ —We mentioned yester
day tbut Messrs. Brown & Cos. held the exclu
sive right to bill posting in the city. We ars
informed this morning that Mr. Ed Hicks
holds a license for the same purpose, and that
he has the permission of several warehouse
men to post on their walls. We cheerfully
make the correction and atate that orders left
at the Brown House for Mr. Hicks will he
promptly attended to.
Fine Cotton. —Judge J. W. Knott sent us
samples of the cotton that took the $250 pre
mium at St. Louis, also of that sent to Atlanta.
It is of the Peeler variety, and is almost as tine
as silk. This variety of cotton always com
mands one cent on the pound more than any
other, and is considered the best for spool
thread and the liner clasß of cotton fabrics. The
•I udgc is very proud of his cotton, and has a
good right to be, as you don't see the kind lie
grows every day.
Too Bad. — A certain church in our city
was densely crowded on la6t Sunday night
with people who were anxious to sec the wed
ding ceremony performed for a certain couple
who had been taking moonlight strolls, billed
and cooed and announced themselves in readi
ness to be made one. It is said the young lady
iuvited all her friends and her friends’ friends
to be there, and they went. But imagine their
surprise when they saw the matrimonially in
clined young lady enter the church with an
other lellow at her side. They at once saw the
sell, and a more chop-fallen crowd you don’t
see every day.
We deprecate this method of tilling churches
—it Is wrong.
Dinner at Bkown’s. —The polite Filmore
points to the door of the diuing saloon, and
when you get Inßtde of the door, the g 'Od
looking and accommodating John Thomas,
who is head-waiter and a foot larger than any
body filling that position before, takes charge
of you and turns you over to the tender mercies
of a bevy of affable waiters, who with smiles
shower around your plate small dishes of sa
lary food and then beg you to have some
thing more.
And this may he taken as a sample of how
they treat everybody, for when we ate there to
day not a waiter in the house knew that we had
gone there for the express purpose of finding
out how they treated their guests. It would
be repeating the words used by every man, wo
man and child who ever ate or slept beneath
the roof of Brown’s Hotel, to bhv thst It is the
“ best house In the South. ’’

Mayor's Court.— A number of visitors ap
peared at the courtroom this morning. For
a wonderXhcre were several eases ou the dock
et, all of the colored way of thiuklug.
The first case called involved a quartette of
young men who loved a fuss better than to
cat. In fact they couldn’t live without one.
They gave their names us Sam Jones, Henry
Gordon, Torn Stephens and John ltasdal. In
order to give weight to the matter they will
ante up a V a piece or dig for wurrnms on the
streets for thirty day’s.
Tandy Miles wanted jestlce la his case.
He threw too much weakened soda water un
der his shirt and in consequence thereof
proved obstreperous In view of the next fair
being held in Macon and funds being necessary
to make the thing a success, Tandy will con
tribute *lO and costa, or spend thirty days of
his valuable time in removing weeds from the
walks at the Ptik.
Tlie continued case of John Henderson, for
stealing a pistol, came up, but the witness
failed to know anything definite concerning
the affair and John’s ease was disin'ssed.—
Another charge, for swindling, was instantly
brought forward, and u magistrals will attend
to him during the day.
Punch Coloroan and Gieeu Walker pitched
into each other for a regular rough and tumble
light at Walker’s meat shop, hut the interesting
scene was spoiled by the appearance of an offl
eer, who kindly undertook to show them the
way to the City Hall. By way of a change, they
will pay *•’> and costs each.
Joe Lanier and Henrietta Wofford sat down
to rad the Bible. Joe was pretty certain that
a certain verse read so and so, but Henrietta
begged to differ with him. After finding that
she was right, Henrietta playfully nudged Joe
In the cheek, when he hauled back and struck
her a sidewinder on the jaw. From this they lmd
a fuss. For slapping a woman Joe swells the
treasury of the city to the tune of *lO and costs.
Thus the Court closed, and locking arms with
Lowenthal, we went down town to mingle with
better people.
Tni: Gjibat Dev fwnoxvs House or S.
Waxelbacm ami Brother.— This mammoth
I)rv Goods House is truly one of the greatest
in all the Southern country. We doubt if
there are many which are mere extensive on
the North American continent outside of New
York and Philadelphia, and even in those
cities there are not many carrying heavier
stocks or doing a larger trade.
Occupying the centre of Triangular Block
running through from Second street to Cot
ton Avenue, and fiom cellar to roof, there are
live grand divisions to the establishment.
The cellars or ground rooms are used for
packing and unpacking goods for all depart
ments and for the storage of Domestics.
The right hand floor above is the chief whole
sale department, und here wo find a ship load
of Prints, Domestics, Alpaccas of all colors,
Janes, Bleaching*, Shirtings, Stripes, Checks,
Ginghams, Fancy Dress Goods, Red and White
Flannels, Opera Flannels, Tickings, Brown
Goods, Corsets, Linscys, Poplins, nlfll so on,
running through the entire catalogue.
On the left ie the general Retail Room, and a
busy scene it always presents, morning, noon
and night. It would be much easier to tell
what is not in there than what is. It contains
among other tiling* the largest stock of silks
in Georgia—some of them running as high ns
SIOO per pattern. Our ladies can find anything
there from an inch of ribbon to a cashmere
shawl.
The tw o floors above are set apart for ready
made clothing, boots, shoes, hats, shawls,
hosiery, gloves, linens, shirts, balmoral Bkirts,
cloaks, blankets, quilts and notions ad infini
tum.
But it is treeless to call every article by name,
it would take up half the space iD our paper.
Dealers must go and sec for themselves. A su
perficial glance makes one think there is
enough on hand to supply the whole trade of
Macon for months to come, and yet so great is
the trade of the house, it is necessary to send
off new orders for fresh supplies almost every
day ill the week. Scarcely a steamer leaves
New York for Savannah without having con
signments for “S. W. & 8., Macon.”
The Senior requests ub to make the positive
statement as a fact that they cell at Xeto York
price*.
We found the house this morning full of
country merchants and citizens, and every clerk
just as busy as lie could be; and no wonder,
for such a stock as that will attract people to it
the dullest day in the week, and at this seasou
no one wishing to purchase will go by it.
A large capital, industry, the most scrupu
lous honor, and a long series of years devoted
to the business, has placed this house in the
front rand of Dry Goods Dealers in Georgia. It
is known far and wide as such and will continue
to be for a long timo to come. oetfi 3w
