Commissioner will not send our citizens from Macon for their preliminary trial. This would be playing at Justice. The tilterances of a healed newspaper seldom represent the Judg ment or the candor of u community like ours. Wo arc confident that an iuvestiga r lion will clear our citizens, on the ground of their innocence, which we earnestly as sume. Wo are not afraid of malice in the Commisioncr, even if wc thought him well disposed to it. Wo mean to have a fair, full, clear, final investigation. We mean to see to it that those of our citizens who have been put to the inconvenience of arrest, shall ho exonerated and proved innocent, by the most searching investi gation. That investigation is not u matter of w him Our own lawyers, men of acumen and legal wisdom, will ho at hand. The witnesses for the prosecution will he rig idly examined. The arguments of the Government officers will be fully weighed, and legally met. We fear not, therefore. If guilt transpires— 'hen, wo shall have something to say. AVe do not prejudge, for or against. Wo know that there was a riot. We kuow Hint blood was shed, and life was taken- We know that these things are usually < rimes, and evidences of wrong thinking and wrong-doing. But wo want the real criminals arrested, and are willing to vouch for the peaceable disposition of the masses of our own people. We-are ready also, to prove to all in authority, that we do not. as a people, undertake to screen the guilty, or protect them against the due punishment of any crimes which can hr proved upon them. Hut they must be promt Wc do not quarrel with the officers of the law for doing their sworn duty Less they could not do, than nrret those against whom charges are made. Wc believe they have done this in the most Mgreeahlo and quiet manner. They have evidently tried to exercise wisdom and discretion. Wo thank them for it> and tliii<* far commend their spirit and dis position. Wu hope to sec the same—con tinued. In the absence of all sectional or patty hading, we ask lor, and will, wo doubt, not, bo grunted, a fair Impartial, and thorough investigation This is nil we de mand ! with the additional word that that investigation he conducted lit Macon. - * Sayn the Lumpkin Independent Hev. W. W. Hicks, editor of the Macon Lntkiu'HlSK, has retired to the rural shades of Florida, and our friend Bridges W. Smith wields the goose quill during his absence. We wish l)r. Hicks a pleas ant trip, nml a safe return, uml that Bridges W may sue lots of tun while he runs the machine. The Kn Tit items* is one of our most highly appreciated ex changes, ami wo ate glad to see it pros pering. A cs, hut tve had to hurry home to save the remains of this pint of Georgia—since Smith, or the KsTßitcuisE, or something else equivalent, had already raised the devil ns far as No. il, on the way to Kloi Ida. Tilings are calming at proaent, aud wc arc longing for those "rural shades" in a duck of a bout, ou the blue St Joint's. Thl. fiom the Savannah Now* proves that that Journal bus sometlilng in Its head besides lire and insccts-even wlmt is so scarce a commodity generally, brain 3■■ The report of Mayor Huff, primed lu tin* Macon papeis. is spicy reading. It is "l it leu in tint nervous, Irencl. an I, style, char octeriallc of Iluff, ami is not calculated to conciliate those who. for some reason or other, have opitoset 1 his method of munic ipal affairs, The statement of the finan cial condition of Macon shows that city to l>u on the high road to prosperity, and shows that Mayor Huff s management has hcen w ise and efficient We don't know what the people of Macon think about it, hut it is pateut to all that Hull is the best Mayor the city ever had. The Fair Grounds alone have given to Macon a prestige aud prominence that she would uever have at taiued otherwise, and they aw worth to the city more than live times their cost. • TRIT. in Fronde's last lecture,he parses a grand and deserved couipliuicut on Hamel O’ Cornell, the great champion of tolerance -Said the lecturer —“A great man is great because be discovers the tendency of the age. aud has tlie courage to place himself at the head of it." Good and true 1 AndO'Cornel! did this, aud became the emancipator of tol erance." We need to-day such an cinauclpator, here, among us.—Oue who has the ken to see, the greatness to comprehend, and the courage to declare and defend. Hhotoek Fitch, of the Qrintn Star, complimeou our astute friends of tho Tel egraph and Messenger anent their emi gration small talk. Now, its none of 4jurs. but *t always sympathize with the in the tight. We therefore hliafu 0? teeHr'^M. ll ' l respectfully show An Indianapolis Inly lost a pockts. coutaiuiug sl3 75 one day last week It was picked up hy a newsUsy and prompt ly returned to the owner, who rewarded Kis honesty by making him a present of le entire amount o it' >ur agricultural neighbor—yclept the Telegraph and Messenger, lias done itself characteristic credit In a short article in to-day's issue. Wc refer to the l'. 8. Com missioner matter. The Telegraph cannot, it scents, hold a brave pen or speak a brave word iu an in dependent way. It has never cultivated that exceedingly good thing in a journal— magnanimity. It seems to have visions of grindstones ever before its blood-shot eyes, with Telegraph axes everlastingly being ground. Now, the matter in hand is of consider able gravity, and the part played by our cotemporary is entirely its own. The side play concerns others, and among them, us. . The Telegraph informs its little coterie of followers, that it was notified "through various parties in hi* (Bwazie's) confidence" etc., etc. Italics are ours. It must needs try and rust a handful of dirt, hoping that some would stick. It is not enough to characterize tiie no tifleution after its method, hut a mean, con teinptiblc, unmanly lling must he made at those who condescend to carry said notifi cation ft said immaculate sheet-claiming to he democratic. Now, we just happened to be oneofthesaid notlficrs, in our proper, open, editorial way. It came to us, and we gave it such publici ty as we thought wise and proper. But we arc not in Commissioner Hwuze's corill dence, any more than the Telegraph and Messenger is in ours or any other living man's ! AVe do not charge tha*! our cotcm porary's fling is at us, nor is this question gertnaln to the matter. It strikes us, how , ever, because wo were an original natificr, 1 and with transparent respect for our arrest -1 ed citizens. Does the Telegraph affirm that to be knowing to such determination on the part of the United States Commissioner argues affiliation with him Will the Telegraph my that to inform it uud llie public of such determination, proves or even intimates the confidence of said Commissioner ? A nice game of bluff indeed, would that be, worthy of un old blase broker in spotted paper, or antiquated dealer in old clo'es Auil yot, what different construction can one put upon our neighbor's language! AVe so construe St, and so apply It, and fling it hack reeking with its own slander, ns almost beneath our contempt I It may as well he understood that narrow gunge prejudices are of little Recount in these limes of liberal democracy and patriotic tolerance. ICxnct justice, fairness, honor, and fra ternity between equals, are words now he coming quite popular and familiar. And he who undertakes llie artful dodger, or spits out Ids 111 concealed venom of insin uation against those whose ways arc less dark than his own, will be apt to find himself suddenly called to ordor, in a way that such creatures do not usually en courage, or have the ability to appreciate. AVe mildly suggest to our many sided cotemporary, that a little more transparent zeal for liberal democracy on its part, would be grateful to our party and to the citizens hereabouts . that a little less pre cipitnney in matters of moment, would also he useful nud harmless . that not quite so much of the Falstaffiuu heroic in those lily Is of political leadership—known as editorial articles would probably add to their classic excellence and secure to them the immortality they so justly deserve— all'— and. in conclusion, as the preachers say, a slight, never so iuflnitessimal or homcspntllle a recognition of the great his torical and magnificent fact that a news paper can be soundly democratic and yet fair to nil. just to all. magnanimous to ail. charitable to all, aud malicious to none! would bo reasonable. oi it u:\i' .11 ttnit. If any man can bo found to dispute VV A. Hull's fitness for the high place he oc cupies as Mayor of Macon—ho is eilhct much blluded by prejudice, or deeply im bued with selfishness. It secuis that Mr Hull' is much blessed with personal enemies. That there is a small army of people devoted, under chosen leaders to his overthrow. They propose, so it appears, to hurl him from power, wrest from his grasp the city's seal, and retire him to thu oblivion or obscurl tv, or whatever the render's fancy may prefer,—from which he was originally taken. Well, this is the common fate of great events and extraordinary personages.— That is, tube hit at. Hut what's the use? <? bone t If history proves anything, it proves that that particular blunderbuss invariably docs more execution at the breech than at the muzzle. Men cannot kick about events as they would wind bags, for the very reason that they are not wind bags, but hard, stubborn, awkward, inde pendent things, called events. The same holds good of eveutive or earnest men. They arc* not usually upset by a storm of blujter or abuse. They thrive on these things With an iudiffor cnlism that amounts to stoical careless ness, they move aloug the golden track of duty, at a rate that must soon leave the rabble far behind. Besides, personal dis like has very little to do w ith real success or the want of it. The dislike of certain fossilized prejudites, to coin a word, in a given community, never helped or bin dered any man w ho had a purpose before his eyes. Some people do not understand this. They are very rural folks. Their eyes have never seen the glory of success ful effort. They have never achieved for themselves. They were born to medioc rity of respeclability and fortune, and they ;t ls'o¥trt' U>! w ** ere llie . v were born. But of action Theri DH ’ n of U,ou ***‘ ud ** o*.,cu To them ebe whispers her sublime se crets. To them she bolds outs the glit tering crown of absolute and everlast ing greatness They aro very apt to havo enemies. It could not be otherwise, it should not. They rise by the power of opposition. The breath of fire revi uls the gold in the ore, so the breath of hate, enmity and fiery op position, shows the brightest gold deposits in the character of the man. So much for that! It will come to pass, to the credit, fame, wealth, prosperity and happiness of our beautiful city, that this same William Arnold Huff will be re-elected Mayor, The people havo said so. Ilis official career makes it imperative that lie should be continued. The busi ness mind of the city (see another column), has also spoken its wish. It only remains for him to say the word, and it shall be. At any rule wc lake the liberty of say ing it for him aud conclude this article by nominating if. A. Huff, for Mayor of Ma con, in behalf of all classes of citizens, all institutions, all progress, and all gratitude. THE CHAMPION NI.IOER. If un orator who, a few years ago, pre scribed n social ostraism and desertion by Lis wife for every Southern man who dar ed to hint ut moderation, conceives an ar dent ullection for Horace Greeley, and travels "accidentally” over the countiy ostensibly for the purpose of making speeches on the Presidential election, but, really, endeavoring to iuflucuce the members elect of the Legislature to vote that lie (ttio orator) may go to the United Ktnlcs Senate, may we not conclude that he is a regular slider ¥—a back-slider, a down slider, a slider in every direction? And will not our new members of the Legislature prefer Johnson, or Jenkins, Colquitt or Gordon, or—if his health would permit—another distinguished gen tleman, to represent them in the National Senate? Consistency —Not the jewel which so many foolish people are looking after, but the nom tie plume of a clever, would-be satirist, wants to know if we did not preach politics on Inst Sabbath evening. Answer. As we are not in the political line, ate aspiring to no office, pay our debts, and tell the truth if we know it—it is impossible for its to say. Joseph wants to kuotv how long it takes an orange tree to boar fruit from ti e seed ? Answer About ten years. Scrutator—Has been studying the Sur rency matter, and is in a peck of trouble and quandary. He bravely asks for our editorial opinion, and puts the matter thus . 1. Were the manifestations’real ? 2. Could they have been caused by lru malt collusion? 3. Is it possible (constructively) for spirits—disembodied spirits, to do such things ? •L What is your faith f .insuer: —Tho manifestations were, doubtless, real. They could have been caused by hu man agency. It is, we think, quite possible for splr ! Huai agency to manifest itself iu various ways, and possibility is a great word. Our taith in general is, that the supernatural is more closely blended with humanity aud mundane affairs than our philosophy teaches, or reason apprehends ; and, that we shall, doubtless, become more and more familiar with it, by patient study, and re ligious devotion to the good and true.
