WE HOPE >OT.
We hope the U. 8. Commissioner will
not send our citizens from Macon for their
preliminary trial. This would be playing
at Justice. The tilterances of a healed
newspaper seldom represent the Judg
ment or the candor of u community like
ours. Wo arc confident that an iuvestiga r
lion will clear our citizens, on the ground
of their innocence, which we earnestly as
sume. Wo are not afraid of malice in the
Commisioncr, even if wc thought him well
disposed to it. Wo mean to have a fair, full,
clear, final investigation. We mean to
see to it that those of our citizens who
have been put to the inconvenience of
arrest, shall ho exonerated and proved
innocent, by the most searching investi
gation.
That investigation is not u matter of
w him Our own lawyers, men of acumen
and legal wisdom, will ho at hand. The
witnesses for the prosecution will he rig
idly examined. The arguments of the
Government officers will be fully weighed,
and legally met. We fear not, therefore.
If guilt transpires— 'hen, wo shall have
something to say.
AVe do not prejudge, for or against. Wo
know that there was a riot. We kuow

We know that these things are usually

and wrong-doing. But wo want the real
criminals arrested, and are willing to
vouch for the peaceable disposition of the
masses of our own people. We-are ready
also, to prove to all in authority, that
we do not. as a people, undertake to screen
the guilty, or protect them against the due
punishment of any crimes which can hr
proved upon them.

to-day's issue. Wc refer to the l'. 8. Com

The Telegraph cannot, it scents, hold a
brave pen or speak a brave word iu an in
dependent way. It has never cultivated
that exceedingly good thing in a journal—
magnanimity. It seems to have visions of
grindstones ever before its blood-shot
eyes, with Telegraph axes everlastingly
being ground.
Now, the matter in hand is of consider
able gravity, and the part played by our
cotemporary is entirely its own.
The side play concerns others, and
among them, us. .
The Telegraph informs its little coterie
of followers, that it was notified "through
various parties in hi* (Bwazie's) confidence"
etc., etc. Italics are ours.
It must needs try and rust a handful of
dirt, hoping that some would stick.
It is not enough to characterize tiie no
tifleution after its method, hut a mean, con
teinptiblc, unmanly lling must he made at
those who condescend to carry said notifi
cation ft said immaculate sheet-claiming
to he democratic. Now, we just happened
to be oneofthesaid notlficrs, in our proper,
open, editorial way.
It came to us, and we gave it such publici

arc not in Commissioner Hwuze's corill

porary's fling is at us, nor is this question
gertnaln to the matter. It strikes us, how
, ever, because wo were an original natificr,

-1 ed citizens.
Does the Telegraph affirm that to be
knowing to such determination on the
part of the United States Commissioner
argues affiliation with him
Will the Telegraph my that to inform it
uud llie public of such determination,
proves or even intimates the confidence
of said Commissioner ?
A nice game of bluff indeed, would that
be, worthy of un old blase broker in spotted
paper, or antiquated dealer in old clo'es
Auil yot, what different construction can
one put upon our neighbor's language!
AVe so construe St, and so apply It, and

as well he understood that narrow gunge

limes of liberal democracy and patriotic

he who undertakes llie artful dodger, or
spits out Ids 111 concealed venom of insin
uation against those whose ways arc less
dark than his own, will be apt to find
himself suddenly called to ordor, in a way
that such creatures do not usually en
courage, or have the ability to appreciate.
AVe mildly suggest to our many sided
cotemporary, that a little more transparent
zeal for liberal democracy on its part,
would be grateful to our party and to the
citizens hereabouts . that a little less pre
cipitnney in matters of moment, would

If any man can bo found to dispute VV
A. Hull's fitness for the high place he oc
cupies as Mayor of Macon—ho is eilhct
much blluded by prejudice, or deeply im
bued with selfishness.
It secuis that Mr Hull' is much blessed
with personal enemies. That there is a
small army of people devoted, under
chosen leaders to his overthrow. They
propose, so it appears, to hurl him from
power, wrest from his grasp the city's seal,
and retire him to thu oblivion or obscurl
tv, or whatever the render's fancy may
prefer,—from which he was originally
taken.
Well, this is the common fate of great
events and extraordinary personages.—
That is, tube hit at. Hut what's the use?
<? bone t If history proves anything, it
proves that that particular blunderbuss
invariably docs more execution at the
breech than at the muzzle. Men cannot
kick about events as they would wind bags,
for the very reason that they are not wind
bags, but hard, stubborn, awkward, inde
pendent things, called events.
The same holds good of eveutive or
earnest men. They arc* not usually upset
by a storm of blujter or abuse. They
thrive on these things With an iudiffor
cnlism that amounts to stoical careless
ness, they move aloug the golden track of
duty, at a rate that must soon leave the
rabble far behind. Besides, personal dis
like has very little to do w ith real success
or the want of it. The dislike of certain
fossilized prejudites, to coin a word, in a
given community, never helped or bin
dered any man w ho had a purpose before
his eyes. Some people do not understand
this. They are very rural folks. Their
eyes have never seen the glory of success
ful effort. They have never achieved for
themselves. They were born to medioc
rity of respeclability and fortune, and they
