Still's I'alliilg.
The police force was considerably reduced
this morning. About eleven were discharged,
leaving eighteen or nineteen to perform the
duty. This looks like peace.
As Inloriuation.
United States Attorney Farrow said at the
trial of tliu illegal voters that the new law was
that no policeman could arrest a man for illegal
voting five days before, on the day of election
or two days afterward, except for a breach of
peace in some manner.
. .
For Saviinnsili.
We learn on good good authority that the
prisoners and witnesses of the “Enforcement
Act ease” will be obliged to report in Savan
nah, Monday, at 10 o’clock. We hope our
friends at Savannah will meet us at the Depot
with a hand of music.
A ltig liiisincss.
The Wolff Brothers on Cotton Avcutic are
doing a heavy business in tlieir line. They deal
extensively in all kinds of wrapping and print
ing paper. Tlieir specially is paper bags for all
purposes, printed to order. They buy rags
and other material for paper making, always
giving the highest market price for them. The
secret of tlieir heavy business is tlieir uniform
courtesy to everybody, fair dealing and integ
rity .
Tew Dancing School.
Madame DeLannaga and Prof. Allmon have
opened a dancing school in Milledgevillc, and
are prepared to receive and iustruet pupils in
the art graceful. This arrangement does not at
all conflict with their engagements in this city,
as they are only in Milledgeville on unengaged
Macon days. We commend the Madame and
Professor to our friends in Milledgeville and
tru-tthey will receive a liberal patronage.
Surreney Again.
It is with a painful pleasure that we an
nounce a revival of the curious manifestations
at Surreney. F ram all accounts the demonstra
tions are wilder than ever, and Mr. Surreney
having become so disgusted and disheartened
that he resigned the house to the mercy of
tlie invisible sperrits, and will not return soon.
Wc know that this affair lias been classified by
our brethren of the press abroad as a first-water
hoax, but now that there is an opportunity of
witnessing it, wc hope they will go and sec for
tbcmselvss.
Clieese Stealing.
On AVedncsday night a darkey entered the
store of our neighbor, N. A. Megrath, and
quietly shouldered a strong box of cheese, and
scampered. It required the united efforts of
the three slim gentlemen, Messrs. Parker, Me
grath and Wilcox, to bring him down They
finally closed on the suffrage slinger and he
dropped the cheese and took himself off in a
highly interesting fanner. onsi>ering 1 lie
aggregate weight of the three gentUmen, ray
nearly seven hundred pounds, we think iie
race a good one, and score them 3.

Hulls.
Many of our citizens arc glad to know that
our theatrical hull is In as safe a condition as

A Itieh Case.
Esquire Harman was called upon this morn
ing to look into the particulars of a rich ease.
It seems that yesterday a darkey from Hous
ton sold Mrs. llarvey on Cotton Avenue, a
milch cow for several dollars in money and “a
few tilings” ill her store. The price agreed
upon was promptly paid and Mr. Nigger de
parted.
But this morning a gentleman from Houston
by the name of Bry ant accompanied by his
neighbor Fretwell appeared at Mrs. It’s aud de
manded the cow as his property, saying site
had been stolen by the aforesaid Mr. Nigger.
Mrs. 11. after listening to the story got furi
ous and seizing a stalk of sugar cane made for
the countrymen generally and Fretwell in par
ticular who both beat a precipitate retreat.
T hey rallied at Squire’s Harman’s office witli a
warrant setting iorth assault, etc., which was
duly executed by officer Kent, but in doing so
lie kept his eye well planted oil the sugar cane
in store and took good care that his line of re
treat was unobstructed.
Squire Hannan was dismissed by the defense
and Squire Sprinz will adjust the ease. The
chief-of-police lias got the cow in the meantime,
ar.d as she is said to be a line milker any fami
ly without a cow can lio doubt be accommo
dated with a quart or two by sending over to
bis headquarters, until the case is disposed of.
•• Wanted liis Splnaage.”
United States Marshal Seifert was at his win
dow in the postoffice busy as busy could he.
He was right in the midst of u pile of money
orders trying to get them straight when a
wooly head pops in at the window and in a
voice that told of much anxiety, yelled
“Is dis Mister Seefoot ?”
“Yes, what do you want?"
“I want my spinnage.”
“Your ‘spinnage!’ ”
“Yes, Bar. my spinnage.”
“Your Subpoena, you mean.”
“Yah, yah, data it.”
“Are you a witness ?”
“You jes bet. Kase I saw de fuss an’ I urns
standin’ way up town an’ I seen der shooting,
dat I did.”
“Who did you see shoot?”
“Dunnosali; da jes shoot an’ shoot an’ I
didn’t stop to 6ee who shoot, but gimme nie
my spinnage an’ lem me go. Use in a hurry,
liuckrn man waitin’ fur me.”
Somebody had told Cuffee that those hold
ing subpoenas drew $2 per day and lie was after
that $2. It is needless to say he didn’t get his
“spinnage.”
A IScHutil’iil W imlou.
Our friend Grace, of Greer, Lake & Cos., lias
been exercising his very excellent taste in the
arrangement of the large show-window of their
mammoth establishment. Like a true connoi
seur, lie beautified the bottom with bottles of
his best wines, champagnes, etc., and then sus
pended delicate dishes of still more delicate
craeke*rs ; then comes a taste of Malaga, raisins,
prunes, figs, citron, etc.; then a basket of arti
ficial fiv i> makes your mouth water; the sides
of the window are ornamented with nicnacs
and notions, the whole walled in by a tempting
display of various kinds of canned fruit, vegeta
bles and ahell-fisli, tastefully arranged, forming
a pyramid. As Murray would say, the arrange
ment of the window “reflects credit upon
the head that conceived and the hand that exe
cuted it.”

Tin* Debate.
Mr. t'dltor .—The debate by the members of
the Robert E. Lee Debating Society, nt the
Baptist Chai>cl, on last Monday night, was a
success. The query, “7s homr the only q>lure
for i ooinou ''' was well handled by the speakers,
notwithstanding the limited time allowed them,
and the large congregation present attested
their high appreciation of the efforts of the dif
ferent debutants by applause. There were a
few youngsters present whose ahna mater
would do well to learn something approxima
ting to good manners, or else keep them witliiu
the limits of its own enclosure. Young men,
Ignorance of the ordinary proprieties of life,
should be well attended when they are allowed
to visit public assemblages.
At precisely half past seven o’clock, the Vice-
President, Mr. Thomas .1. Amlcrson, took the
c lndr and requested the following named gen
tlemen to net as Judges: A. Wilder, Adrian
Tlssereau, George Henry and S. S. Little. The
Secretary then read the subject to be debated
and tho names of the speakers.
Mr. Joshua 1). Sullivan opened the debate in
favor of the homo side; he contended stoutly
that woman should remain at home, and that
when she went outside she went beyond her
sphere. The speech was a good one for an
opening. Mr. R. H. Schramm followed. The
speaker was in earnest and made a capital ar
gument. Mr. Schramm took hold of the mat
ter with a determination to win, and the result
proved that he was not disappointed.
The third speaker was Mr. J. N. Jordan,
whose humorous expressions caused considera
ble merriment. Notwithstanding the humor,
however, the speaker uttered a good many
stern truths and labored to win the tight.
Mr. Thomas R. Sullivan, the fourth speaker,
though sufl'cring from a severe cold, defended
his side with great zeal and vigor, lie claimed
to be woman’s friend; paid a high tribute to
his Sunday-school teachea, and closed with an
admirable allusion to Queen Victoria.
The fifth speaker, Mr. J. W. Ellis, came up
t the mark in real earnest, scouting the idea
of woman being allowed to labor from home,
and declared that this question was attached
so some fatal ism from “down east.’’
The sixth and last speaker was Mr. James
11. Smith, lie did the best he could for his
side; occupied the time allowed him, ami
retired well satisfied that he was in the right.
At the conclusion of the speaking, the Judges
took the matter in hand, and, after a brief con
sultation, gave the decision against home, well
pleased with the second public debate of the
Robert E. Lee Debating Society.

Tub Provision Market.— Corn Is cheaper
in St. Louis than it lias been in twenty year*.
We see it quoted at only 32 cents per bushel,
ami presume the telegraph has given the cor
reet figures. Bacon is lapidly falling in all the
Western markets; it is under the shadow of
the new crop and although already low, the
concurrent opinion all around is that il will go
•ovcrul points below the figures now obtained.
Buyeis in this section arc mortal afraid of it,
only keeping enough on hand to keep their
hand in. The brag crop in the West this year
is greater than ever, and is hacked by a corres
ponding crop of corn. The Northwest will
find the South are unsatisfactory united for her
surplus this year. While they have raised ft
large crop of Gen, Grant up there wo have suc
ceeded in raising almost enough cam to do us,
aud no small amount of bacon, wheat, ami so
on.
At Home To-Day.-— The weather is bad and
has been for several days. A steady rain has been
falling for the last twenty-four hours. This re
tards and makes all branches of business very
unsatisfactory. The streets present a very dull
appearance, and our wholesale and retail men
complain bitterly of the general state of trade.
But in a few days the weather and the election
excitement it is hoped will both clear up and
leave commercial matters once more freo to
travel their usual way.
