Tiie small hand engine of this Company was out yesterday evening being tried for the bene jit of parties who wished to sec “how the old thing worked." The result w::s, ns usual, satisfactory. * ♦- - - - A Sudden Cbanjje. Notwithstanding that a certain college pro fessor said of to-day “Aurora appealed with eyes open and unclouded .brow, wearing a hap py smile oil her dimplid check,” the atmos phere is algid. Overcoats were trashed and donned in .a jiffy and coal has ail upward tendency. To-day is the coldest day we’re had this season and looks as if winter had set fairly in. The sun is out in all his glory, hut his rays give no warmth. As the almanac makers say now is the time to split your hair and lay by your summer stock of frost. S'le Steamer Named. Defiance Fire Company held a meetingl ast ; night for the purpose of naming their steamer. It was unanimously named “W. A. Huff,” in liouor of our worthy Mayor. While we are glad that the company has seen fit to hestow the honor upon one so worthy, we do not fan cy the naming after iudividuals, unless they have done their mission hereon earth and lia\c laid down to rest. The steamer is ordered from Clapp & Jones and will reach Macon about the middle of next month. In the selection of the uame, No. 5 showed a disposition to be up with the times—progres sive—for if there is a man in the State of Geor gia who is more progressive than W. A. Huff, we would like to shake hands with him. yiayor'a Court. The Court was presided over by Mr. G. B. Baberts this morning, and as lire chronic of fender* heard of it, aud knowing how he loved to pile on the tines,;.kept low. But throe fair maids were oblivious the fact or forgot it, and they imbibed too much of that which cheers and innebriates, and it fell to the lot of Officer Loentlml to have them docketed for drunk and disorderly. Jennie Williams, Carrie Hidle aud Minnie Spears did get drunk—gloriously drunk—for there were three young ladies of the naughty school to testify to the fact. The drunkces did nut put in an appearance, but plead guilty and signified their willingness to pay whatever damages were necessary. This was ahout the worst thing they could have done, for Aldeman Roberts imposed a fine of $25 and costs each. Tin: next ease was that of Henry Johnson, a wee bit of a nig, who exhibited bis fondness for loose cotton in too public a manner. Offi cer Murphy had his argus eye ou him and hauled him up. The little rascal said it was the first time and that he would do so no more; but man is made of sterner stuff than boys, and Henry makes a little bed of Ids sto len cotton and sleeps on it for ten cold nights in Chapman’s European plan hotel. The Court put away his spectacles, landed his beaver on the north side of his head, win’ .*d at the reporter, and left. I n<ierTw Flag'*. It i- with pleasure that we announce the eomiug of Bose and Harry Watkins, to our city. This gratifying intelligence is brought to us by their gentlemanly and courteous avwt! courier, Mr. John 11. Marshall. Rose and Harry are not strangers lo our amusement loving people, having given us mur.y opportunities oi admiring them us gen uine artists in their line. Mrs. Watkins, known aa the Queen Star of the South is an actress of considerable merit while Harry still sustains kiaenviable reputation at a comedian of the first water Whenever they and their excellent troupe have appeared they have been greeted with Urge and intelligent audiencca and the press everywhere lias been loud In their praise. Tire play selected for their opening night is one in which the strength of the entire Com pany i brought out, and the talents of the two lead'll,g artists shown to the best advantage. Down-trodden, or Under Two Flags, is not a s*nrational play, made np of elegant costumes and cant phrases, but one of merit, of sense, of respectability, and we advise our citizens to •rail themselves of this opportunity of witness ing its performance by first-class artists.
