For several days past we have forgotten to inform the people that liens is scarce and that times are remarkably dull. This is said to be a very excellent troupe > Personal. Hon. W. A. The train was due here about six, but a few accidents prevented. The lVatklns. From a dispatch received by Messrs. John Mitchell was a stranger in a strange land, and in order to avoid acquaintances took several drinks. These pnt him in a mood to make the acquaintance of every body, especial ly a policeman, who kindly assisted him to the barracks, where he spent the night. His Honor, pro tem, discharged him. Bcuutii'ul Work. The ilucst article of workmanship that lias left this city for many days was, on yesterday, sent from the shop of Mr. T. C. Ne-bitt It was a beautiful plantation stationary engine of fourteen horse power, built by Mr Hiram Herrington, assisted by O. 1. Herrington, am painted in colors by Mr. P. B. Griffin, decora tive and landscape painter, who has already taken aeveral premiums, at the various fairs, this fall llurdy.jiurd}-. The intelligent monkey, with his sweet toned organ and the man-keeper, departed from this city this morning on the Central Railroad train—destiny, Maeon. We checrful , )y recommend Jocko to the attention of the Enterprise ; ye local of that journal will find him quite companionable; he is an expert at stealing niekles. Thi? from the Savannah Mirror. We saw the sweet-tonod organ to-day, bnt we will give him a dollar for every nickle he steals from ns. .Wore WHneasea. The following persons were subpeemffid this morning to appear before the Grand Jury of the United States Court at Savannah at 10 o'clock, November 18th: Willis Spinks, John Fonghner, Dr. J. W. Carter, Frank Disroon, E. Bond, Henry Rob inson, Henry Hudson, Solomon Shelton, Jeff F. Long, Hayne Ellis, T. J. Simmons, Win Virgin, Ben C. Smith, Fleming Tinsley, Bris tow Williams, and three others who were not subpo-naed at the time of our going to press. Accidental Shooting. Willie, son of Mr. Geo. B. Tax KecelTcr. ft Editor Enterprise .—We all remember two " years ago, Mr. W. T. Nelson generously with drew from the race for this office in order to to promote harmony in the party, and insuie the j anccess of the Democratic party in the cam y. paign. He is again a candidate for the posi tion and should receive the nomination, beiDg ; well qualified to discharge the duties of the % office, and if formally placed before the peeple he will add strength to the ticket. Emils Olivieb. Local Politics. By s notice which appears in the city papers, B meetings will take place in all the Wards ol I the city on next Tuesday night for the purpose I of nominating Aldermen. We presume a general mass-meeting will I take place later in the week to nominate condi- I datea for city officers at large. And that a I County Convention will aasemble at an early I day to select candidates for the county, and a I Sheriff, Ordinary, etc. A Thrilling Romance. ’Twas twilight. Phoebe was Ulumiuating the earth with a soft, mellow light, and the stars studded the blue vault and all nature was hushed. The birds had ceased their car rolling and were resting their tiny throats for to-morrow’s singing. No sound save the Bill ing of the evening zephyr as It played through the lofty sycamores that stood sentinel-like around the mansion of old Sluffer. In buying their stock they go right to the place where it Is made; for lustanee, Goahen butter. Instead of buying from second or third parties they buy direct from the parties putting it up, thus getting good butter at a price that allow them to sell It at low figures. A* we said before, it was night. The Arc In the grate glowed with unusual vigor—for it was cold. In the parlor of the stately mansion were two persons; one of them was a young lad?, the only daughter of proud, aristocratic Bluffer. Beside her sat Charles Slimpkins, a poor young man, whose lack of money made him a terror in the eyes of old Slufier. They have without doubt the finest amt host stock of groceries in this market. In canned goods they have a large stock of everythin c put in cans These they buy.as they do every thing else, direct from the dealers. ’Tis true he had no countless millions but lie bad talents and energy enough to be a local editor—then what did Susan Sluffer care! Money was nothing alongside of Charles’ tal ents. So they sat there and planned an elope ment —yea an elopement But while we have the inclination we lack the time and space to go through and examine their large stock. Selected with great care, sold at low figures and proving the very best, they give entire satfaetion. But the elopement was frustrated by the ap pearance of Sluffer, who asked if It waa nut time Susan was in her little bed, to which she replied ; “Whenever I want to go anywhere that I am certain to be treated right and get my family supplies Just as I want them I always go there.” Such is the exclamation of nearly any lady in the city. “You may spurn me and leave me penniless, but marry Charles I will.” -This she said in her most becoming manner, nnd it frightened old Sluffer so that he said: “Charsles take her. Make her a good hus band and she will make you a good wife. She knows where to buy good groceries at low fig ures and that is the best recommendation these days for a wife. Bea good boy, Charles, save your money and always get your family sup plies at Greer, Lake & Co’s.” The Tittle Rascal. A small nig named Andrew Smith, about ten or twelve years of age was hauled up this morning by Officer Lowenthal under the fol lowing circumstances. Ho was spotted, and Officer Lowenthal was told to watch his move ments. Andrew went to the Freedmans Bank and when he came out the Officer grabbed him. According to his bank hook he had just de posited $1.55, and in his pocket book was found $1(5.50. Andrew owned up and Bald that he had been tapping the till of Mr. Goo. R. Barker, for a week or so; that he had given his mother, Sophia Johnson, a two and a ten dollar bill, and his sister, Eva Smith, a two and a five dollar bill. After stealing Mr. Bar ker’s money, Andrew always made it a rule to patronize him by purchasing his provisions from him. His manner of stealing was to reach over the counter and grab the content* of the till. Mr. Barker sued out a warrant for his arrest, and he will not steal any more for some time. Cherry Street. We learn from good authority that Captain B. F. Ross, President of the Street Car Company, intends running a track on Cherry street. When Mr. Jasper Greer went North he acted upon this promise and had made a few beautiful ad vertisements on glass with a photograph of his fine store in the centre. In the photograph is a street car drawn by two hor*ea, and Jasper has been troubled by every body asking about the car, two horses, etc. You should see the ad vertisement by all means as it is a beauty. They are placed over the ticket box in each car. Too Mud. The Atlanta Constitution in giving a descrip tion of a marriage in high life says : “I)r. Will* then stepped forward, and in chaste language and Impressive manner, took the marriage vows.” As the learned Doctor is well known here and Ins friends are counted by thousands, this item may prove interesting and perhaps novel. These local editors manage to do wrong as other people sometimes, and Whidby, of tin- Constitution should have been more careful The marriage alluded to was that of Mr. Al bert W. Foster to Miss Emma L. Hill, Dr. D. Wills officiating. Another Brutal Outrage. A negro man named Elias Winfrey was lodged in the county jail, night before last, charged with committing a rape upon a little white girl named Flanigan, only twelve years of age. The deed was done in this county, on the Houston road, abont two miles from town. It is stated that there is every proof necessary to convict the negro of having committed it. The negro strongly denies any connection with the crime. Meeting ol Colored Cttlr.ea* Ht City Hull. At 8 o’clock last night the meeting was call ed to order, and on motion, Mr. Long was cadled to the Chair and W. D. Sneed requested to act as Secretary. The Chairman stated the object of the meeting was for the purpose of settling on a plan of action in regard to the approaching municipal election, and organiza tion of the Ward clubs. Having announced the meeting open for business, Mr. P. O. Holt moved that in conse quence of the informal manner of the meeting that further proceedings be etaved until Mon day evening, and the colored citizens of each ward be notified to attend. On motion of Mr. Sneed, the following were appointed a committee to prepare resolutions ; Messrs. J. F. Long, Ed. Woodlife, P. O. Holt, N. D. Sneed. Mr. Holt moved that the proceedings of this meeting be published in the Daily EntbrpbWk and that we do now adjourn until {Monday night, at 8 o'clock. J. F. Laxo, Chtu’n. N. I). Sneed, Sec'y. IT is universally conceded that advertising is a necessity to success in business; it is also conceded, by the shrewdest business men, that newspapers are the best medium for reaching all parties whose trade is desired. THE MONROE ADVERTISER reaches more of the people trading with Ma con than any other journal published in the country; it is, therefore, the, terX medium of communication with the planting interests. We will be happy at any time to furnish refer ences to leading merchants here and elsewhere, who will testify to the feet that they tiave re ceived orders for goods from parties who read their cards in The Advertiser. In feet, many who have availed the.mselves of its columns, candidly say that its value exceeds that of all other journals in which they are represented. The A dvr rCm r has the freshness of youth and the ripeness of age, and is therefore deservedly successful. CHARACTER OF ADVERTISEMENTS. No advertisements are admitted which are not believed to be above question and of real value, and from parties so unquestionably re liable that the readers of The A dvr r titer will tie safe in ordering them from any distance. To onr readers, the fact of its appearance here has all the weight of endorsement and authority. Address, JAS. P. HARRISON, Forsyth. Georgia. TO MERCHANTS !
