A Neat Turnout.
We noticed a black bob-tailed bull with ele
gant harness on, hitched to a spring wagon
this morning. Ho put on no more airs for all
that than if yoked to an ox-wagon.

A Good Cigar.
Reader, do you smoke! Do you enjoy tlie
aromatic fragrance of a good cigar! Then you
should be happy. When troubles annoy you
what sweeter consolation is there than to
smoothly draw the fragrant blue smoke
through layers of good tobacco. Not jerk it
through as if you were too greedy to allow a
bit of the smoke to escape, “but draw it mild. ’
The best cigar we have smoked recently
was from the model grocery atore of Putzel &
.Jacobs, and Is known as “Putzels Delight.”

The following telegram was received this
morning by Whittle <fc Gustin :
Parties not required to come: notify them
and securities to meet to-morrow morning. I
go up to-night. W. A. Lofton.
Parties interested will call to-morrow at the
office of Whittle & Gustin and carry their se

give hail for their appearance at the uext terra
of tlie U. S. District Court.
The Green Einc
is new running freight through from Chicago,
shipping in bulk or packages as may be direct
ed by purchasers. This Line has its faults, but
take it all in all, it is the best freight arrange
ment we have ever had by many long odds.
The opening of the Montgomery and Decatur
road takes so much freight from the Western
and Atlantic that It would occur impossible to
repeat those annoying blockades we have every
winter at Chattanooga. That road should its
incompetency to do the business given it last
winter, and our merchants therefore congratu
late themselves that it has a rival line over in
Alabama. When tlie Griffin and North Alaba
ma road reaches Decatur it will have another
rival, and a third in the Macon and Knoxville.
A Ciame of Dominos.
Iu our advertising column* will be found an
advertisement in which Lieutenants Taylor and
Hurley are charged with neglect of duty. The
following is a brief statement of the facts:
Mr. Barclay called at the barracks with a white
man and a negro a few minutes after eleven.
He found Lieutenants Taylor and Hurley en
gaged in a game of dominos. Mr. Barclay
stated his case to them and asked their assist
ance in arresting a thief who had stolen about
*125 from him. Lieut. Hurley being off duty
told him that he did not go on duty until ten
minutes before twelve, and at that time he
would have to call the roll, and after that he
would attend to it. It was finally agreed that
the white man and negro should meet ollicer
Hurley at 12 o’clock. Mr. Barclay left, and at
th* appointed time the officer met the parties
and instituted a thorough search over town for
the thief. They found where he had been but
failed to get him.
We know our police to be vigilant and
prompt in the discharge of their duty, and dis
like to sec any charge brought up against them
unless the charge is true and can be proven.
Superior four!.
Last week a negro named Frank Strong was
tried before Judge Cole on the charge of hav
ing stolen a box of tobacco from Messrs.
Greer, Lake & Cos., and was sentenced to six
months in the county jail. Yesterday he was
again brought into Court to be tried upon an
other charge of simple larceny. The jury was
cmpannelcd and the case was about to begin
when the Chief of Police entered the court
room, with a letter from the principal keeper
of the penitentiary, elaimiug the negro as an
escaped convict. The trial was stopped at
once, the jury discharged, and the negro was
remanded to jail to await identification. If lie
proves to be tha fellow that is wanted, the Su
perior Court will be done with him until lie
shall have finished with Grant, Alexander A
Cos.
BCharlca Sparks, indicted for attempt at lar
cenj, was tried, liut the jury brought in a ver
dict of acquittal on the ground the negro was
of unsound mind.
Only one case was taken up this morning,
Ayres vt. Collins, but it had not reached a con
clusion at the time of writing.
To-morrow being Thanksgiving day, Judge
Cole announced that he would hold no Court
and dismissed all the jurymen until 9 o’clock,
Iriday morning, when it is understood that
Bennett and Holmes will be tried. A number of
ciTll cases arc also set down for that day.
Court will sit during all of next week.

THE PEOPLE'S MEETING.
TUB ItAM, CROWDED TO OVEItFLOWINC.
STANDING ROOM ONLY.
WILLIAM ARNOLD HUPP M AIN NOMI
NATED.
HE IS LOUDLY CALLED FOR AND IN RE
SPONSE SI*EAKS A FEW LINES.
By seven o'clock the City Hull was crammed
to overflowing with our citizens. There could
be found the lawyer, the doctor, tlie merchant,
and tlie working man. They came us tlie peo
plc to nominate a Mayor. They came there
determined to have a voice in tlie nomination,
and they did.
A perfect mass of people enviroued, as it
were, the every entrance. Tlie steps amt por
tico were completely crowded.
The meeting was called to order by Captain
T. G. Holt, Chairman of the Central Democrat
ic Club of tliis city. In a very few words lie
atated that the object of tlie meeting was to
ratify the nominations for aldermen that had
been made in tlie several wards, and to transact
such other business as might come up.
Tlie unines of those who had been nominated
were then read, and Mr. R. W. Jemison moved
that tlie nominations be confirmed by acclama
tion. This was carried with few, if any dissent
ing voices.
Mr. John P. Fort then introduced Hie follow
ing resolution.
Resolved, That whereas a large number of
tlie merchants and business men of tills city
have recommended W. A. Huff for rc-election
to tlie office of Mayor, therefore it is tlie sense
of this meeting that it would be necessary aud
unwise to make a nomination for saiil office.
It was some time before tlie chairman could
put the motion to adopt tlie above resolution
so enthusiastic was the audience. Cheer after
cheer went up expressing the favor with which
it was entertained. At last sufficient order
was restored to formally put the motion.
Reader, did you ever feel real goad ? Well, it
would have done your very soul good to have
seen that almost universal affirmation!
Colonel H. 11. Jones then moved that, in
order t arrive more fully and conclusively at
the sense of the meeting, a division and count
be made.
This was carried, and all who favored the
adoption of tlie resolution were requested to
rise and hold up their right hands.
We think there were about sixteen hands
that went up dissenting.
The hall was then fairly alive with deafening
cheers for Huff Every man'teemed to be a
Hull' man, and lie was not particular how loud
he let tlie fact become known.
After adjournment a large portion of the
crowd remained in front. Mayor Huff having
come np was seen and loudly called for. He
ascended the steps in front of tlie hall ami
said:
Gentlemen :— I will not attempt to address
you at length. I have no language with which
to express my gratitude to you, for this the
most positive evidence of your friendship for
me and of your endorsement of my official
course. I thank you gentlemen. I thank you
most sincerely. Xifhall never forget tlie young
men of Macon. I thank tiie white, men and
colored men for tlie happy leeling of fraternity,
and co-operation which controls and influences
us all in our action tu-niglit. 1 thank you all.
1 know that there are n few disappointed men
here. My kindest words are now for those
who have opposed me. 1 have no heart vo re
joice in the defeat of any mail. I regret now
that I should ever have spoken or written an
unkind word of any man in Macon. 1 thank
you gentlemen and bid you good night.
After tills short speech, tlie crowd dispersed,
some going home, others going in squads mak
ing the welkin ring with ’ray f’uli!
Until a late hour in the night yells could be
heard for Huff. Tlie darkies crowded together
and although there were lots of them that had
“$5 and costs” pronounced in their ear by Huff,
paraded the streets shouting tlie words
that find an echo in every man who loves Ma
con and its beautv —Hurbau fob Huff !
THE BEAUTIFUL MUD.
TnE FOOLISH FROLICS OF FUNNY FELLOWS—
MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS—THE KEY
HOLE BRIGADE ON A TARE.
For a long time people have wondered what
use could mud be put to other than the mak
ing of brick. It seemed to be something made
for some purpose, but what that purpose was
always remained a mystery. It was always in
the way, especially on rainy days. It was a
blessing to washerwomen, but no one else ever
found any good accomplished by it. But a
few mischievous boys found a use for it last
night. Sometime after twelve o’clock a party
of them went around the business portion of
onr town and filled the key-hole of each store
door with the villainous compound. By time
the clerks got down town to “open up” the
mud was hard. You never saw so many lock
smiths at one time and on such short notice in
your life. Aleck Menard crawled upon the
frost covered roof of Zeilin’s drug store so as
to get inside the store by the sky-light, but it
was no go. He bad to break the cellar door
and crawl up.
Some merchants were one and two hours
picking the mud out of thekey-holes. Some tall
swearing was indulged in and if one or more of
the mud-lers had shown themselves, something
darker than mud would have down freely as
water.
Not content with plugging every key-hole,
they w ent to the post-office and chocked the
letter box full, thereby ruining all the letters
that were in it.
Now, this was a fir*l rate joke. Stopping
up the key-holes of about forty of our best
stores may Ire fun to the hoys, but its thunder
to the merchants. If a fire had occurred last
night in the business portion of our city, what
chance would there have been to save the
stock !
We arc glad that some of tin:.: are known;
not by the “curl of their bar,” but by other
little peculiarities, and our Grand Jury may
have something for them to do other than
dabbling in mud. Look out' .’/> '
