Christmns I’ree.
The Lodges of Good Templars are making
extensive preparations for a Christinas Tree on
Christmas night, at the lodge-room of Aurora
Lodge, near this office. They have gone to
work in earnest to make the affair a complete
success. Tickets will be sold by the members.
A .Uptake.
In the returns of voting yesterday, published
in the Telegraph this morning, Mr. W . f l. Nel
son received ‘126 votes, instead of 160, as that
paper had it. Mr. Nelson’* friends say he was
swindled out of enough votes yesterday, let
alone the printer’s blunder.
The Entertainment To-'Mklii.
Mr. Russell arrived in tliis city last night,
and will perform as advertised to-night. To
those visiting him to-night, we promise that
they will witness a performance refined ami
amusing, and one to which it will ho a pleasure
to refer in years to come. Go by all means.
Cold Water Temple.
A strong effort is being made by frienos of
the temperance cause to organize a Cold Water
Temple among the little children of our city.
This is truly a commendable movement and
wc hope all the little boys and girls of the city
will attend the meeting to-morrow night at
Aurora Lodge rooms, in Hollingsworth Block.
Personal.
Mr. T. M. Garrett, formerly Master of Trans
portation of the Macon & Brunswick Railroad
left our city last Monday to take charge as
Superintendent of the Edgefield, Henderson A
Kentucky Railroad.
Thus Macon has lost a good citizen and as
clever a young man as can be found anywhere.
We are glad to learn of his good fortune, and
trust he may do well in his new sphere.
Wonderful.
It is truly astonishing how many valuable
and beautiful holiday gifts Brown A Cos. have
sold in the last day or two. The store is full
at all hours with ladies and gentlemen pur
chasing or admiring the numerous articles
arranged upon shelves and counters so tempt
ingly. The time is 6liort between now and
Christmas, and interested parties should hurry
up, or else go without making a present to the
dear ones at home.

try.
We regret to learn that the epizootic is pre
vailing and rapidly spreading oyer the planta
tions in all the cotton belt below us. On one
place in Houston county four mules and one
horse have already died out of a herd of twenty,
and all the balance are sick.
Our friends in the country are truly having a
hard lime of it. But Don Quixote said, “for
tune always leaves a door open in misfortune
to admit a remedy.” Wliat effect will this
have upon the future of cotton '!
Tlie I-’ahir of Avis.
Mr. John 11. Marshall, formerly with tlie
Rose and Harry Watkins Troupe, has arrived
in tlie city and is busily engaged in advertising
the Fakir of Ava, who performs here on Fri
day night. We think we discover in this Fakir
an old friend and one of the best magicians in
the country. His tricks are new—none of tlie
old clap-trap things a hundred years old—and
his performance is really meritorious. The
prices of admission are placed at low figures,
thus enabling everybody to attend. The pre
sentation of gifts is a feature within itself, a*
he gives away only such articles as are really
worth taking home.

Errors.
For some time past tlie engineer of this col
umn has been worried nigh unto death by the
multiplicity of errors, both typographical and
-.’ramatieal, appearing in his articles. This
th-kled our handsome brother of the Telegraph,
aad lie would punch us in the short ribs and
langli over our misfortune. Bnt the intellect
ual compositor probably left off troubling our
peace of mind and went to work at the other
office, these charming errors: In
qieaking of Col. Hardeman’s resignation, tlie
printer makes Watson say, “but no steps wera
taken to supply his places.” Again, in giving
notice of our friend, Sol Smith Russell, he says
Mr. Smith sings well.” Now it’s bad enough
for Sol to carry the name of Smith in the mid
die, but when it comes to piling it on to one
end, Sol can t like it. Who laughs now ?
Isaac* House Saloon.
I his famous saloon, under tlie control of
that prince of good fellows, Ullmann, it flour
ishing like the proverbial bay tree. The bar is
stocked with the purest wines and liquors and
genuine imported cigars. Gasper Malado, the
celebrated oyster opener, is with him, and is
ready to supply customers with oysters in every
shape. Go around and see Ullmann.

The first number of tlm Georgia Musical Ec
lectic, published by Guilford, Wood tX Cos.,
Macon and Atlanta, ami edited by Arthur L.
Wood, found Its way to our table this morn
ing. We rather like the new magazine. It con
tains musical information; its selections are
good, and its typographical appearance admi
rable. Besides nine or ten large pages of read
ing matter, it gives each month an excellent
piece of music. Every musician and music
lover should subscribe to it. Only SI.OO per

Our thanks ure duo Messrs. Guilford, Wood
iX Cos. for the following choice pieces of music:
Gone to the Heavenly Garden —song and
chorus—words I*v -v N. Mitchell; music by J.
C. Chamberlain.
Kay of Sunshine Polka, by Aug. Puehcr.
Bertie’s Schuttishe, by Charles Kiukel.
This is one of a number of sweet little waltzes,
polkas, etc., arranged under tin* head of Ten
Little Hogues.
Kecolleotions f Childhood, a baritone song;
words by J. B. Sweet, music by 1L P. Dunks.
Hang up the Baby's Stocking, a popular
song, destined to have, a tremendous run.
Over 60,000 copies have already been sold,
And why shouldn’t it become popular ?-
Listen :
“ Hang up the baby's stocking,

The Jmnel will case still occupies the
attention of the United States Circuit Court
in New York. The controversy involves
the possession of many millions of dollars,
which have been in dispute for forty years.
The plaintiff, George Washington Bowen,
has been examined, and has testified that
Madame Jumel was his mother, although
he was an illegitimate child. The hand
ling of this old woman’s money —she was
the wife of Aaron Burr, and divorced—
lias eluded Mr. Bowen more than once
before, and though lie may be her sou—
for she apparently led a very loose life
it would seem impossible to prove it.

The closest scrutiny and investigation
will probably fail to establish the origin
of the Fifth Avenue Hotel tire, and doubt
less no amount of inquiry will show that,
tbare was any person directly responsible
But itseems slcar that there have been vio
lations of tlie building laws in the addi
tion to tlie buildings for which the respon
sibility maybe fixed, and should be.
Mayor's Office, Macon, December 10,1 872.
IN addition to the usual inconv uience which
. lias been suffered by the public from the
prevalence of the horse disease, we now see a
complete blockaded condition of our railroads
and the almost total suspension of all commer
cial business in our city for mere lack of street
transportation. This unusual state of affairs
suggests the want of some immediate relief,
both to the railroads and the merchant. Upon
consultation, therefore, with the railroad au
thorities and the different dray companies in
the city, I hereby give notice to any and all per
sons in the adjoining counties, that they are in
vited and requested to bring in their ox-teams
and assist us in the dray work of our city for
the next two or three weeks, at the end of
which time we hope to be able to resume the
horse and mule labor.
Parties Winging their oxen to the city will
be allowed to use them in the (image of all
goods FREE OF LICENSE. It is believed that
twenty to thirty teams could find constant
work here for several days, at good paying
prices.

THU PltUmifllH WEEKLY.
IT is universally conceded that advertising is
a necessity to success in business; it Is also
conceded, by tlie shrewdest business men, thst
newspapers are the best medium for reaching
all parties whose trade is desired.
THE HONKOK ADVERTISER
reaches more of the people trading with Mu
coil than any other journal published in tlie
country; it Is, therefore, the bent medium of
communication with the planting Interests.
We will he happy at any time to furnish refer
ences to leading merchants here and elsewhere,
who will testify to tlie fact that they have re
ceived orders for goods from parties who read
their cards in The Atli'erliner. In fact, many
who have availed themselves of its columns,
csndldly say that its value exceeds that of all
other Journals in which they arc rejirescnted.
The Advrrtieer has the freshness of youth amt
the ripeness of age, and Is therefore deservedly
successful.
CHARACTER OK ADVERTISEMENTS.
No advertisements arc admitted wliish arc
not believed to be above question and of real
value, und from parties so unquestionably re
liable that the readers of The Aduertieer will he
safe in ordering them from uny distance. To
our readers, the fact of Its appearance here lias
all the weight Af endorsement and authority.
