fire Alarm.
Two alarms of lire occurred Saturday night.
One was the burning of some hay on a car at
the Macon & Western Railroad depot, and was
extinguished by No. 4. The other alarm was
occasioned by the burning of the kitchen on
the lot of Mr. J. 11. Bandy, in the western pint
of the city, in the neighborhood of Tatnall
Square. Bad night for a fire.

A Great 4/iianrr.
We saw this morning at the Globe Saloon a
magnificent diamond ring which is to boraffiud
f-r $5OO at $lO a chance. The ring is a heavy
grooved one, set with nine first-water diamonds
and presents a dazzling and beautiful sight.
The chances are going off in a hurry and those
•a ho would like to have an opportunity of try
ing their luck for something really magnificent
i,mid call on John Griffin at once.

Wc cordially endorse the following from tiie
Rome Commercial: “A newspaperman who
passes the showman at the door without the
formality of handing him a ticket, is known all
over the world as a “dead head.” A more
foolish idea never prevailed. Newspaper men
generally pay dearer for their privileges than
-ny other class of men. We mention a single
i .-lance In point. On yesterday the Coramer
" g.ive the Harry V> atkins troupe thirty dol
-1 rs and twenty cents worth of lsca! notices—
“ oar regular rates—for which we charged
• hern nothing. Wc were not under obligation
to give them a line outside of their regular ad
. rtisement. We believe Mr. Watkins did
furnish this office with three or four tickets,
Which, at bis regular rate, would have amouub
i to less than one-seventh of what he received.
■ ■ ■ ■ this is not the only way in which the
i w-iper man pays dearly for his “whistle.”
I hey do more dead-heading than any class of
men living.”

The County Flout ion.
That almost worn-out, yet valuable jewel
known as fair play, seems to have been taken
out, by some, mysterious Instrumentality, from
the store of jewels of our city cotemporary.—
Fair play, everybody will admit, should char
acterize u horse race, a mule swap or a bargain
of any kind, then why not an election? Our
neighbor runs on the principle tlmt unless the
true Democratic ticket is elected the county
i goes by the board, the party ia ruined and will
! undergo a frightful ordeal of misfortunes and
I calamities. But we don't exactly sec it in such
I light. There is a ticket in opposition to that
of Urn Democracy. But what of that? Shall
there be no other party but the Democratic- is
that party composed of all the true, and good,
pure and spotlc. * men of the earth, and all
olsc is trash ? Should every man who dares to
think differently from Dciuocrutic be east out
and branded us a rascal ? Is that the way to
build up our party, or strengthen it? Is this
practicing “ peace and good will ” to all man
kind? No! Wo must live and let live, but
our neighbor, il s< ems, cannot be induced to
think so.
. Jn local elections wo think party lines should
not he drawn. W e think the voter should not
look neither to the right nor the left, as far as
politics arc concerned, but cast his vote for the
man he thinks will be the best officer. No mat
ter by what party, and let polities liaveiought
j to do with it. This may called “incendiarism,”
! lor wc have been time and again charged with
• belonging to the enemy. But upon this point
v. luce ii' Vi r'> cn fairly placed before the
| people, Our p iktics are Democrat, but we
! have always been brought up to believe that
every person, whether white man, negro, wo
| nun or lunatic, have a right to think as the, he
! or it pleased. Then, if a number of people
! choose to think differently from another nmn
| her, it is their privilege, and we can sec no
reason why they should he jnoru “corrupt”
than the other. And now us party lines haw
• been draw n in this local election, neither party
j should brand the other a set of thieves and
j plunderers. Therefore wc say vote for him j
j who in your opinion will till the office best.
Our neighbor lays particular stress upon
filling tba office of Ordinary. There are only
two candidates for tin office—lion. Washington
Foe am! Hon. Chat*. T. Ward, the present in
cumbent. It i.- not our desire to advocate the
claims of either. Mr. Poe is a gentleman
whose character is beyond reproach, and fully
competent to discharge the duties of the im
• portant office if elected. Mr. Ward has filled
the office to the satisfaction of everybody and
no one w ill attempt to deny it. Having once
filled it to everybody's satisfaction he is cer
tainly able to fill it again. So there the voter
stands with two good men before him. Ilis
1 duty is simple: throw aside the polities of each
! gentleman, vote for him who will, as you think,
fill the offief most acceptably, and —all will be
well.

The Columbus Enquirer, of Saturday, says :
Supported by her Comic Opera Company,
she carried a good audience completely by
storm last evening, in the burlesque extrava
ganza “Fortunio.” The burlesque fairly glit
ters with gems of music, mined from different
operas, or caught from the popular songs of
the day, and is replete with local hits, puns and
various nonsense. Mrs. Oates sustains the
title role, plays with charming abandon and
sing* nmgnificently. She has the taste to adapt
her voifc to the music, singing sweetly in the
airs of some of the grand old operas, or with a
reckless saucy voice in the slang music that
claims burlesque for its outlet. In her appear
ance she is decidedly pretty in face and figure.
Her acting good, spirited yet chaste, and never
overstepping the bounds of propriety. The
company has been well selected, and is made
up of the best burlesqucrs on our stage. Their
style quiet and their fun intense, without be
ing broad, and neve r for a moment steps be
yond the eon fiscs of decency. In this respect
it is a decided improvement on many of the
troupes now floating around the country, and
is a model they would d< well to pattern after,
rite cast is judiciously distributed.
Fortunio will be played on Wednesday night,
ami seats should be secured early.

About seven o’clock yesterday a man was

but his legs were bare of those inexpressibles
which arc supposed to b- worn by strong mind

street, and entered another alley, and was lost
to sight. Where he was going, or what he was
doing in his strange dress, deponent knoweth

IT is universally conceded that advertising la
a necessity to success in business; it is also
conceded, by the shrewdest business men, that
newspapers are the best medium for reaching
all parties whose trade is desired.
THE MONUOE ADVERTISER
reaches more of tiie. people trading with Ma
con Hum any other journal published in the
country; it Is, therefore, the brat medium of
communication with the plunting interests
We will be happy at any time to furnish refer
ences to leading merchant* here mid elsewhere,
who will testify to the fact that they have re
ceived orders ter goods from parties who read
their cards In The AUuertUer. In fact, many
who have availed themselves of its columns,
candidly say that Its vulue exceeds that of all
other journals in which they are represented.
The Adrrrliatr bus the freshness of youth and
the ripeness of age, and Is therefore deservedly
successful.
