hero at G a. m . Sunday, nicking the ■r, n
on schedule time, showing that the terri
ble allecta of the iccent sloim throughout
the country has made no serious disimb
mice with railroad travel in this latitude
especially on the Silicon mid Western
toad. At the early hour of our arriving,
the city whs still slumbering , and, from
the uppcarancc ol the streets mi l the low
temperature ol the atmosphere, she hud as
sumed Northern airs. These appearances
were farther confirmed on going three
miles in tliu country. The northwest
sides of buildings, fences, tress and shrub
bery were covered with ice, tho result of
the storm on Christinau day. At the end
of our journey were found those on earth
to us most dear, with surroundings that
make home most happy.
Tile extreme cold of this region lias had
its good effects as well us Its possible ill ;
the former an apparent, whilst the latter
are not so cosily discoverable. The ground
is frozen and soundings are uo longer nee
csssry in street navigation—this is enough.
’1 lie business ol the city lias been very
satisfactory for tliu season. The only
source of compluiut wc have heard i- the
wuiit of transportation fuel lit is in sending
goods to country purchasers. The Geor
gia Hoad is especially complained of as
discriminating against tiie trade of this
City, and not iu the want of ability to fill
nish means of transportation, as stated. —
Hut whatever he tho cause of tho com
plaint alluded to on that particular Hood,
Augusta is lietlffiUcd. Besides the lm
incn c trade brought to Atlanta by the
railroads centering here, she docs an ex

direction, und especially northward, even
into North Curolina.
Water-works und good wagon roads
are the next things in onlei lor tho future
interest und growth of Atlanta. Her
growth thus lur to the unreflecting has
been marvellous, und yet her course is
onward. Tho two Important queries are
Why does she grow '—and when will she
slop growing! To answer these questions
would more than till tho space at com
mand for this lutter, olio or two compre
hciiMvc reasons Ihqrcforc must suffice
Her geographical position is uncveelled ns
a distributing point for everything that
enters into trade and commerce ; her i !i
mate the year through is salubrious ; her
people are active and enterprising, am!
are constantly ringing it into the ems of
everybody everywhere that there i such
a place as Atlanta.
To filed this lutU i purpose, htii hii nunss
men liberally use the columns of the Press,
with which the city is well supplied, vl/.
three dailies and some hslfndoz.cn weekly
papers, all well and ably conducted, and
supported. They also semi their agents
iu every direct ton, aud make tho personal
acquaintance of those it is tlu ir hitcrcst t*>
know Hanks are multiplying here, thus
ocuttallr.lug capital and iuemilfng husi

reasons why Atlanta grows. When she
will atop growing is when she shuts lu r

The proposition having I con refused by

addressed to them all. U|h>ii tl.e counting

as it may appear, when the result was

first niade by me at the only time w hen it

before llie ballots were couutcd. If it had
be< n accepted all would have been well
and we could have had anew nomination
But 1 cannot consent that my opponents
shall bl w both hot and cold. As my
proposition was rejected, wlien it was in
doubt who w uld receive the highest vote,
ran any one doubt hut that mv oppoocul
would siill reject the same proposition
made by the couimillee, if he had received
the highest vote ! The question admits of 1
but one answer, and I shall accordingly
make the race, subject to the will of the
people, and if elected will discharge the
duties of the office faithfully and efficiently.
I believed, on the day of the nomination,
and st il believe, that the irregularities
were against me, hut I received the whole
vote in spile of them.
In conclusion. I will add, that if I merit
tlie office, and am worthy of It, und quali

but let me say a word to those who may
have a personal preference for my oppo
