to FloriUn in Winter.
_^rinir,for the last.thirty-five years, devoted my
wooie time and attention io the study of lun^ diseases
4 *f cl •hat I nucterstand fully the
course that ousbt tn bo r-ur^uod to restore a tolerably
baa esse of diseased lungs to healthy roundness. T he
nrst and most important atop is fur the patient to
avoid taking cold.and the best of ail places on this
continent tor this purpoce in winter. Is Florida, well
down in the State, where the temperature is regular,
and not subject to such vsria'irns as in more I*orth-
e n latitudes. Palatica ts a point I can recommend.
A good hotel Is kept there by Peterman. Lait winfer
hadtJdUM«i r k rS . OD k toe, S vboea lmn had been
of the ’ bn i l who - u "4« r the healing influence
°',“ c clunate and my me Jicir.es, were getting well.
uno hundred miles further down the river is a point
which I would prefer to Palatka. as tbe temperature
is more even and the air dry and bracing. Melton-
vitle and fcoterpri e are located there. I should sire
a decided preference to Mollonviiio. It is two tndes
♦£il n "i^," »°d it seems almost impossible to
take cold there. The tables in Florida might be bet
ter, and patients complain at times, but that is a good
indicates arct-.in of appetite, and when this
is the case they generally increase in flesh, and then
tno mugs man hear. -
Jacksonville, llibernin, Green Cove, and many
other places in various parts of Florida, can be safe
ly recommended to consumptives in winter. My
reasons for saying so are that patients are less liable
to take cold there taan where there i„ a less even
temperatuye. ar.1 it is cot necessary to say that
where a einsutuptivc person exposes himself to fro-
qaent colds he is certain to die shortly. Therefore,
my advice is. go well down into the .State outoi the
roach of prevailing cist winds and f >g». Jackson
ville, or almost any other of tho localities I have
nlined, will benefit thoso who aro troubled with a
torpid In er, adtsordered stomach, deranged bowels.
Foro throat or covgb, but fjr tbosa whotu tre
diseased a more southern point is earne.->t;y iteoa-
mended.
. For fifteen years prior to IS6:>. I was professionally
in New Fork, Boston, Baltimore and PfciladJphia
every week, where I saw end examined on an aver
age five hundred patients a week. A practice so ex
tensive, embracing every pr.rsiblc phase of lung dis-
ca=e, has enabled mo to un ier.-tand the di-casefully,
and hence, my elution in rc.rard to -taking cold. A
person may take vast quantities of •’Schcnck’s Pul
monic Syrup. Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills/'
and yet d>.e if ho does not avoid taking cold.
In Moiida. nearly everybody is using Scheock’s
Mandrake Pills, for the climate is more likely to
produce bilious habits than more northern latitudes.
It is a well established fact that natives of Florida
ruely die of consumption, especially those of tho
southern part. On the other hand, in New England,
one third, at least of tbe population die of this ter
nblo disease. In the Middle States it dues not pro
vail go largely, sti.l there aro many thousands a.
cai e there. lVh-t a va t peicentsga of li e would
be raved.if consua pt ves were as easily alarmed in
r- g» d to taki g fresh cold as they ate about scarlet
fever, small pox, etc. But they are not. they take
what they term a little cold, wh'ci they are cred
ulous or.otii h 11 believe will wear off in a few days.
They pay no attention to it. an hence it lay * the
fjundi ion for a other and another still, until the
lungs arc d seated beyond all hope for enro.
Myalviceto persons whore lungs arc affected even"
slightly, is. to la in a stock of fc'chonek’s Pulmoni:
Syrap, rebec ex’s .‘eawoed T< nic. and •cbenck’s
Mand ako Pills, and go to Morida. I recommend
these partieul.ir mosicine: because I am th-ruoghly
acq'iaiotcd with their eetinn. I know that whe.c
they are used i - strict accordance w th my directior.g
they will do the work tha* is required. T is accom
plished, nature will do the rest. Tte pbj'si :ian who
proscribes fir cold, cough or nigh sweats, and then
advises the patient to wnlk.or rido oat every day,
will bo faro to have a corpse on his hands before
long.
My plan is to give my three Medici-ei. in accord
ance w tii the printed direct ons. except in some
cases where a tree- use of the Mandrake Pi Is is
noccrsary. My object is to give tone to thestoinach—
to get up a go d ajpetito, it is always a good sign
when a patient begins to grow hungry. I have h ir es
of such. With artl’sh for food and the gratification
of tnat relish c m*s go d bloo’, and with it more
flesh, which ii cb seiy followed by a healing of the
lunss. Then thecougn loosens and abates, theexeep-
ing chills and clanuni night sweats no longer pros
trate and annoy, and the patientgets well, provided
he avoids taking c >ld.
I*ow there aro many consumptives wh> have not
tho means to gi Jo Florida. Tho question may be
asked, is tberwno hope forsuch ? Certainly there is.
My advice tosuch is and ever has been, to stay in a
warm room doring the winter, with a tempt rature of
about seventy degre :s, which should bo kept regularly
at that point, by means of a thermometer. Let suen
a p&tior-t take bis exercise within the limits of the
loom by walking np end down as much as bis strength
will p :rmit, in nrdo- to keep np a healthy cLcnlation
oi the blood. I have cured thousands by th-s system
snd cm dost again, consumption is as easily currd
as any other disease if it is taken in time, and the
proper kind of treatment is pursued. The fact stands
undisputed on record that Schcnck’s Pulmonic Syr
up, Mandrake Pill*, and Seaweed Tonic have cured
very many of what seemed to be h-peless eases of
consumption Go where yon will, you will bealmost
certain to find some poor consumptive who has been
re cued from the va-y jaws of death by their use.
So far as tho Mandrake Pills are concerned. every
body should keep a supply of them on hand. They
acton the liver better than calomel, and leave nmo
ol its hurtful effects behind. Io fact the- a-c excel
lent in a’l ca es where a purg itive medicine is ic-
q Tvd- If you have partaken too freely of f.uic.
i n l diarrhea ensues, a dcse of Mandrakes will cure
you. ifypuaresuljtcttos'ekheadache.takeadose
t.f toe Mandrakes end they will relieve you in two
hours. If yon would obviate the effect of a change
of water, or the too free indalgunu- in fru;t,take one
of tho Mandrakes every eight or every other'night,
and you m-.» then drink water and eat watermelons,
pears npp'c-, plums, t caches or corn, without tbe
risk o' be.pc mu e s ck by them 'they will protect
those who live in d m p situaii- ns attain t chills and
If: err. Tty them They aio perfectly harmless.
They can fit. you good only.
I have r> lotted my professional visits to Boston
and Ne v York, but continue to see patients at my
efiiee. No. li N. t'lXril Street, Philadelphia, every
Saturday, trera 9 A. *1. to 3 P. M. Those who wish a

it di ticctly enferstood that the value of my medi-
c urs depoods entirely upon their being taken strict
ly acco ding to direc ions
In conclusion, 1 will say that when persons take
my medicines, and their systems are brought into a
healthy condition thereby, they aro not so liable to
take col.1. yet no one with diseased lungs can bear a
sudden change of ntmosphero wi’hout the liability
of greater or less irritation of the bronchial tube*.
Fu'I directions in atl languages accompany my
medicines, si explicit and clear, that any one era
use them without consulting me, and can be bozignt

I have carefully examined the formnlro by

excellent compound of alterative ingredients.
