Poisonous Medicines.—Tho theoiy that the vi-- rus of disease can bo safely counteracted by doses of poison, is falso and dangerous. Within the last twenty-fivo years, not les3 than a score of nrulont poisons have been added to the repository of the medical profession. They are given in small doses, otherwise tbiy would destroy life immediately; but oven in minute quantities, tbey produce, ulti mately, very disastrous effects. It is unwise and nnpbilosopbical to employ, as remedies, powerful and insidnous drugs, which, in subjugating one disease, sow tho seeds of another atill more un manageable. None of these terrible medicaments operates with as much directness and certainty upon the causes of diseaso as Hostottcr’s Stomach Bitters, as a tonic and corrective, without a single deleterious ingredient in its composition. Arsonio and quinia are given for intermittents; bromido of potassium for nervous disorders; strychnine and prussic acid for general debility; mercury, in vari ous forms, for liver complaint; preparations of chloroform and opium for sleeplessness; and yet theso deadly drugs do not compare, as specifics for the diseases abovo enumerated, with that whole some vegetable invigorant and alterative, while they are all so pernicious that it is astonishing any physician should take tho responsibility of pre scribing them. Let invalids, for their own sake, tiy the Bitters before tbey resort to tho poisons. Tho relief tbey will experience from a course of the harmlees specific, will render a recoureo to tho ureafo preparations referred to, quite unnecessary. The extraordinary cures effected by the uso of the Old Carolina Bitters is proclaimed everywhere. See advertisement of Dr. Batts’ Dispensary, headed Book for the Million—Marriage Guide—in another column. It should be read by all. Jan20-d&wtf O. C. B. means Old Carolina Bitters. Try them A delightful beverage. Dr. SCBEXCK advises Consumptives to go to Florida in Winter. Having, for the last thirty-five years, devoted my whole time and attentionio the study of Inns diseases and consumption, I feel that I understand fully the course that ought to bo pursuod to restore a tolerably bad case of diseased lungs to healthy soundness. 1 ho first and most important step is -for tho patient to avoid taking cold, and the best of all places on this continent lor-this purpose m winter, is Florida, well down in the State, where the temperature is regular, and not subject to such variationa as in more North- on latitudes. Palatkaisa pointl can recommend. A goad hotel is kept there by Peterman. Last winter I saw several persons tnere whose lungs had been badly disease I. bnt who. under the healing influence of the climate end my medicines, were getting well. Ono huocred miles further down the river is a point which i would prefer to Palatko, as the temperature is more even and the air dry and bracing. Mellon- viilo and Enterprise ere located there. I should give a decided preference to Mellonville. It is two miles from river or lako. and it seems almost impossible to tako cold there. The tables in Florida might be bet ter, and patients complain at times, but that is a good sign, as it indicate a return of appetite, and when this is the case they generally increase in flesh, and then tho lungs must heal. Jacksonville, Hibernm, Green Cove, and many other places in various parts of Florida, can be safe ly recommended to consumptives in winter.. My reasons for saying so are that patients are lees liable to take cold there than where there is a less oven temperature, and it is not necessary to say that where a consumptive person exposes bimscif to fre quent colds he is coitain to dio shortly. Therefore, my advice is. go well down into the State out of tho reach of prevailing east winds and fogs. Jackson ville, or almost any other of the localities I have named, will benefit those who aro troubled with a torpid liver, a disordered stomach, deranged bowels, sore throat or cough, but for tboso whoso lungs are diseased a more sonthein point is earnestly recom mended- For fifteen years prior to 1869. I was, professionally in New York, Boston, Baltimore and Philadelphia every week, where I saw and examined on an aver age five hundred patients a week. A practice so ex tensive, embracing every possible pboso of lung dis ease, has enabled mo to understand the disease fully, and nence, my caution in regard to taking cold. A person may tako vast quantities of ’’echenck’s Pul- monic Syrup. Seaweed Tome and Mandrake Pills, and yet die if he does not avoid taking cold. In Florida, nearly everybody .is using fcchcnck’s Mandrake Pills, for the climate is more likoly to £ reduce bilious habits than morenrtLcra latitudes. t is a well established fact that natives of Florida rarely die of consumption, especially those of the southern part. On the other hand, in New England, one third, atleast of tho population die of this ter rible disease. In the Middle States it docs not pre vail so largely, still there are many thousands of eases there. What a va:t percentage of lire would be saved if consumpt-vcs were as easily alarmed in rega d to taking fresh cold as they arc abont scarlet fever, small pox, etc. But they are not. 1 hey tako what they term a little cold, which they are cred ulous enough to believe will wear off in a few days. They pay no attention to it. ana henco it lay* the foundation for another and another still, until the lungs are diseased beyond all hopo for cure. My advice to persons whoso lungs aro affected even slightly, is, to lat in a stock of Schcnck’s Pulmonic Syrup, t'chenck’s Seaweed Tf-nic, and f chenck’s Mandrake Pills, and go to Florida. I recommend these parti :ulcr medicines because I am thoroughly acquainted -ith their action. I know that where they are used i > strict accordance with my directions tbey will do the work that is required. T~ie accom plished. nature will do the rest. Tho physioian who preseribos far c-ild, eough or nightsweata. and then advises the patient to walk or ride out every day, will be sure to have a corpse on his hands before lo i2& plan is to give my- three Medicines, in accord ance with the printed direct ons, except in some cases where a freer use of the Mandre/o Pi.Ia is necessary. My object is to give tone to thestomlch— to get up a goed appetite, it is always a good sign when a patient begins to grow hungry. I havo hopes of such. With a relish for food and the gratification of that relish c mrs good blood, and with it more flesh, which is closely followed by a healing of the lungs. Then the eongh loosens and abates, tho excep- ing chills and clammy night-sweats no longer pros trate and annoy, and the patient gets well, provided ho avoids taking cold. . Now there are many consumptives who havo not tbemean8to go to Florida. The question may bo asked, is thore no hopo forsuch ? Certainly there is. My advice tosueh is. and ever has been, to stay in a warm room during the winter, with a temperature of about seventy degrees, which should be kept regularly at that point, by means of a thermometer. Let such a* A PROVIDENTIAL REMEDY. Tho Mongoose, bitten by a poisonous serpent, seeks a certain plant, cats of it and recovers. Consumption is os easily cured as any other disease if it is taken in time, and the proper kind of treatment is pursued. The fact stands undisputed on record that Schcnck’s Fulmonio Syr up, Mandrake Pill’, and Seaweed XQtiio have cured very many of what seemed to bo hopo!ces casco cf consumption. Go where you will, you will be almost certain to find some poor consumptive who has been rescued from the very jaws of doath by their use. So far as tho Mandrake Pills aro concerned, every body should keen a supply of them on hand. They acton the liver better than calomel, and leave none of it* hurtful effects behind. In fact thev aro excel lent in all cases where a purgative medicine is re quired. If you have partaken too freely of fruit, and diarrhea ensues, a dose of Mandrakes will oure you. If you aro subject tosick headache, take a dose of the Mandrakes and they will relieve yon in two hours. If you would obviato the effect of a chango of water, or the too freo indulgence in frnit, take one of tho Mandrakes every night or every other night, and you may then drink water and cat watermelons, pens, apples, plums, i-eachcs or corn, without the risk of being made sick by them. Sixth Street, Philadelphia. oct22-eodiwly Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, FOR PURIFYING THE BLOOD. Tho reputation this ex cellent mcdicino enjoys, is derived from its cures, many of which arc truly marvellous. Inveterate cases of Scrofulous dis ease, where tho system 6cemed saturated with corruption, have been purified and cured by. it. Scrofulous affections ami disorders, which were ag gravated by tho scrofu lous contamination until they were painfully afflicting, have been radically cured in such great numbers in almost every sea tion of the country, that tho public scarcely need to be informed of its virtues or uses. Scrofulohs poison is one of the most destructive enemies of our race. Often, this unseen and unfelt tenant of the organism undermines tho constitution, and invites the attack of cnfccblingor fatal diseases, without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Agam, it seems to breed infection throughout tho body, and then, on some favorable occasion, rapidly develop into one or other of its hideous forms, cither on tho surface or among the vitals. In the latter, tuber cles may bo suddenly deposited in the lungs or heart, or tumors formed in the liver, or it snows its presence by eruptions on the skin, or foul ulcer ations on some pari of the body. Hence the occa sional use of a bottlo of this Sarsaparilla is ad visable, even when no active symptoms of disease Persons afflicted with the following com- Tetter. Salt JtUeum, Scald Head, Jlingworm, Sore .Ei/es, Sore Ears, and other eruptions or Visible forms of Scrofulous disease. Also in the lar and neivous systems. Syphilis or Venereal and Mercurial Diseases are cared by it, though a long time is required for 6nbduing these obstinate maladies by any medicine. But long continued use of this medicine will euro the complaint. Zeurorrhcea or mites, Uterine Ulcerations, and Female Diseases, arc com- . monly soon relieved and ultimately cured by its S uritying and invigorating effect. Minute Dlrec- ons for each case are found in our Almanac, sup plied gratis, Rheumatism and Gout, when caused by accumulations of extraneous matters in the blood, yield quickly to it, as also liver Complaints, Torpidity, Conyestionorlnflam- motion oftbeHeer, uaJ«KMtce, when arising, as they olten do, from the rankling poisons in tho blood.
