Tempebance Men Admit Its Utility.—No at
tempt has ever been made or ever will he made, to
disguise the character of Plantation Bitters. It
contains alcohol; and no bitter that does not con
tain alcohol is worth a rush. Water wiU neither
preserve the virtues of tonic vegetables nor ren
der them active in the system. This is a chemical
fact which no ono competent to deliver an opinion
on tho snbject wiU deny. Water tonics tnra soar
on the stomach, if they are not sonr to begin with,
(which is frequently the case,) and prodneo and
promote indigestion, instead of coring it. Let it,
therefore, bo distinctly understood that Plantation
Bitten is an alcohol restorative. But mark this:
it is strictly a medicine; not a-beverage. It is to
bo taken in limited quantities and at stated times,
like other remedies and antidotes, and therefore,
its use is in accordance with temperance law, as
well with that “higher law” which renders it In
cumbent upon every being 'gifted with reason to
resort to the best possible means of accomplishing
a salutary end.

A TANY a human being has passed f way, for whose
AVA death there, was no other reason than the neglect
ot Jrnown and indisputably proven means of cure.
Those near and dear to family and friends are sleep
ing the dream'ess slumber into which, had they calmly
adopted
DR. JOSEPH H. SCHENCK’S SIMPLE
TREATMENT,
and availed themselves of his wonderful efficacious
medicines, they would not have fallen. Dr-Schenck
nu to his own case proved that wherever sufficient
vitality remains, that vitality. by his medicinesaod
his directions for their use, is quickened into health
ful vigor.
In this statement there is nothing presumptuous.
To the faith of the invalidjs made no representation
that is not a thousand times substantiated by living
and visible works. The theory of the cure by Dr.
Schcnck’s medicines is as simple as it is unfailing.
Its philosophy requires no argument. It i3 seif-
atsuring, self convincing.
The Seawood.Tonio and Mandrake Pills are the first
two weapons with which the citadel of tbo ma'ady is
assailed. Two-thirds of the cases of consumption
originate m dyspepsia and a functionally disordered
liver. With this condition the bronchial tubes''sym
pathize” with the stomach, They respond to the
morbific action of the liver. Here then comes the
culminating result, and the setting in, with all its dis
tressing symptoms, of
CONSUMPTION.
TheMandrake Pills are composed ofone of Nature’s
hillum teltatum. Theypos-
aitcrativo properties of
“LEAVE NO SXlXO BEHIND.”
The work of euro is now beginning. Tho vitiated
and mucous deposits in the bowels and in the ali
mentary canal are ejected. The liver, like a clock, is
wound up. It arouses from its torpidity. Tho stom
ach acts responsively, and the patient begins to feel
that he is getting, at last,
A SUPPLY OF GOOD BLOOD.
Tho Seaweed Tonic, in conjunction with tho Pills,
permeates and assimilates with the fcod. Chylifica-
tion i3 now progresing without its previous tortures.
Digestion becomes painless, and the cure is seen to be
at hand. There is no more flatulence, no excerbation
of the stomach. An appetite setsin.
Now comes the neatest Blood Purifier ever yet
given by an indulgent father to suffering man.
Schenck's Pulmonic Syrup come3 in to perform its
functions and to hasten and complete the enre. It
enters at once upon its work. Nature cannot be
cheated. It collects and ripens the impaired and dis
eased portions of the lungs. In the form of gather-
jetoration, and lo 1 in a
vanquished, the rotten
iccupied is renovated and modenew,
and the patient, in all the dignity of regained vigor,
steps forth to eDjoy the manhood or the womanhood
that wa3
GIVEN UP AS LOST.
The second thing is, the patients must stay in a
warm room until they get well; it is almost impossi
ble to prevent taking cold when the Jungs are dis
eased, bat it must be prevented or a curt cannot be
effected. Fresh air and riding out, especially in this
Eection of the country in the fall ' * '

diseased, and yet, because they are in the house they
must not sit down quiet: they must walk about the
room a3 much and as fast as tho strength will bear, to
get up a good circulation of blood. The patients
must keep in good spirils—be determ'ned to get well.
This has a great deal to do with the appetite, and is
the great point to gain. To despair of cure after such
evidence of its possibility in the worst cases, and
moral certainty in all others, is sinful. Dr. Bchouck’s
personal statement to the Faculty of his own cure
wan in these modest-rrord-i:
"Many years ago I was in the last stages of con
sumption, confined to my bed, and at one time my
physicians thought that I could not Iivea week; then
like a drowning man catching at straws, I heard of
and obtained the preparations which I novr offer to
the public, and they made a perfect cure o r me. It
seemed to me that I could feel them penetrate my
whole system. They soon ripened the matter in my
lungs, and I would spit up more than a pint of offen
sive yellow matter every morning for a long time.
As soon as that began to subside, my cough, fever,
pain and night sweats all began to leave me, and my
appetite became so great that it was with difficulty
that I could keep from eating too much. I soon
gained my strength and have grown in flesh ever
since.”
“I was weighed shortly after my recovery,” added
the Doctor, 'Then looking like a mere skeleton: my
weight was only ninety-seven pounds; my present
weight is two hundred and twenty-five (225) pounds.

office, No. 15 North Sixth street, Philadelphia, every
Saturday from Q a. m. to 3 p. n. Those who wish a
thorough examination with the Reapirometcr will be
charged 65. The Re3pirometer declares the exact
condition of tho lunga and patients can readi'y learn
whether they are curable or not.
The directions fortakingthe medicinesareadapted
to the intelligence even of a child. Follow these di
rections, and kind Nature will do the rest, excepting
that In some cases the Mandrake Pills are to be taken
in increased doses: the three medicines needno other
accompaniments than the ample instructions that ac-
compsny them: First create appetite. Of returning
health hunger is the mostwelcome symptom. When
it c lines, as it will come, let the despairing at once
be of good chear. Good blood at once follows, the
cough loosens, the night sweat is abated. In a short
time both of these morbid symptoms are goneforever.
Dr. Schenck’s medicines are constantly kept in tens
of thousands of families. As a laxative or purgative
the Mandrake Pills are a standard preparation; while
the Pulmonic Syrup, as a curorof coughs and colds,
may be regarded as a prophylacterie against con
sumption in any of its forms.

Travellers are always liable to sadden attacks of
Dysentery and Cholera Morbus, and these occurr
ing when absent from home, are very unpleasant.
THE PAIN KILLER
may always be relied upon in such cases. As soon
as yon feel the symptoms, take one teaspoonful in
a gill of new milk and molasses and a gill of hot
water, stir weU together and drink hot. Repeat
the dose every hour until relieved. If the pains
be severe, bathe the bowels and back with the med
icine, clear.
In cases of Asthma and Phthisic, take a tea
spoonful in a giU of hot water sweetened well with
molasses; also bathe the throat and stomach faith-
folly with the medicine, clear.
Dr. Sweet says it takes out the soreness in cases
of boneeetting faster than anything he ever ap-
plied.
Fishermen so often exposed- to hurts by having
their skin pierced with hooks, and fins of fish, can
he relieved by bathing with the Pain Killer as soon
as the accident occurs; in this way the anguish is
soon abated; bathe as of ten as once in five min
utes, say three or four times, and you will seldom
have any trouble.
The bites and scratches of dogs and cats are
ion cured by bathing with the rain Killer, clear.
While emotions perish, thought, blended in dic
tion, Is immortal, such will be the list of those cured
by the use of the Old Carolina Bitters.
What is It?—Many, many people suffer from,
they know not what. They are not sick—they are
not well There is no name for it. It is simply
weakness—a breaking down of the vital forces.
Whatever its canees, (and they aro innumerable,)
its symptoms are, in the main, the same. Among
tbo most prominent are extreme lassitude, loss of
appetite, loss of flesh, and great mental depres
sion. Indigestion and a stomach cough aro also
frequently concomitants of this distressing state of
body and of mind. The common remaik in rela
tion to persons in such a condition is, that they are
consumptive. Now, what theso unfortunates really
want is vigor, vital strength; and, as certainly as
dawn succeeds darkness, they can recuperate their
systems and regain perfect health by resorting to
Hoetetter’a Celebrated Stomach Bitters. It is as
clear that a life-reviving tonic is required in such
cases, as that the dying flame of an empty lamp re
quires to be revived with a new supply of oiL Per
fectly puro and innocuous, containing nothing but
tho mostgcuial vegetablo extracts, and combining
tho three grand elements of a stomachic, an altera
tive, and a genial invigorant. Hostetler’s Stomach
Bitters aro suitable to all constitutions, and are as
applicable to the diseases and disabilities of the
feebler sex a3 to those of men.
If you once use the Old Carolina Bitters, you
will have none other.
